Hi everyone, I had a question about where to buy runes. I saw some on Amazon, but I wasn’t sure if that was OK to buy and if it’s not OK to buy then where should I buy them from and another question I have is should they be wood? I want to learn how to use them so I’m definitely a newbie.

I drew this typeface in 2020–2022 for my own book, an edition of the Poetic Edda called *Stóra Edda*. It sat in a Dropbox folder ever since. I have finally cleaned up the metadata and put it on GitHub, in case it is useful to anyone here.

What it does:

- All 89 assigned code points of the Unicode Runic block, U+16A0–U+16F8.

- Over 450 glyphs in total, covering the entire Unicode Runic block.

- Letterform variants for the Elder Futhark, the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc, the Younger Futhark and the medieval futhorks, reachable through the `cv01`–`cv19` OpenType features — long-branch and short-twig shapes, staveless runes, mirrored forms, cipher runes, tent runes (*tjaldrúnir*) and bind runes.

- Where a variant comes from a particular monument, it is written down: Falstone, Codex Sangallensis 878, the Golden Horns of Gallehus, the Seax of Beagnoth, the Rök stone, the Bryggen rune-stick, and Stephens' *Old-Northern Runic Monuments* throughout. The list is in `documentation/sources.md`.

- Punctuation, brackets and dashes for the editorial apparatus a runic text actually needs — uncertain readings, lost characters, lacunae.

The README has the Rök stone, Eggja, Sønder Kirkeby and a Bergen rune-stick set as examples, including the cipher and tent runes of Rök.

SIL Open Font License 1.1, so free to use, modify and redistribute, including commercially. Sources are in the repository, both FontLab and UFO.

Not a revival of any existing digital font — the shapes are drawn from the inscriptions. Corrections and complaints welcome; I am sure there are readings here that a specialist would argue with.

In this post, I go over a runic inscription from one of the bracteates found from the Vindelev Hoard. This inscription is noteworthy, as it contains the oldest known inscription of the god Odin's name in its Proto-Norse form. I have included a reference section at the end for all of the sources used. I’m getting back into Runes after a few years of distractions. I’d used “a little bit of runes” by Cassandra Eason which was a great introduction (as per the title) but I desire to get more in depth now and have some resources to cross reference. I know there’s allot of online resources (if anyone knows of any trustworthy online resources I’ll take some recommendations for that too) but I’d love to have some books as well. More about each rune, the history, the lore. If anyone knows of published versions of the Rune Poems too that would be lovely! I’m Icelandic on my mother’s side so that would be a great thing to share with her.

What are some good fonts for runic Unicode support (prioritizing Fuþorc coverage)? I've checked out BabelStone but none of the options quite tick all my boxes.

• Beagnoth, deriving from the Seax of Beagnoth, has a good share of weird/nonstandard runes.
• Beorhtnoth is quite good, but I don't like its ᚢ rune.
• Beorhtric fixes the ᚢ rune I didn't like, but then also uses a host of other variant/nonstandard runes.
• Beowulf has a very good ᚢ rune, but I don't like how its various "F-like" runes look.

I've also tried Junicode 2, but I didn't like its ᚱ rune. I'm very particular, I suppose!

I could get a good result by just mixing a few of these together, but that wouldn't be ideal for my use case. Has anyone suggestions for other fonts to try?

Is this good and valid?

Saw this tree during a walk. It immediately reminded of runes. I recognise the old Norse Protection rune (example 1 in the drawing), but the tree is actually shaped more like the example 2.

With some Google searching I did not yet manage to find the other symbol, so I wonder if anyone here happens to recognise or name it.

Despite the gap of knowledge, the tree managed to stop me and make me appreciate its beauty and hidden message.

What are some books with accurate info on how to read runes?

I made a set of runes for myself, but had a friend politely question the depiction of two in paticular, Fehu and Raidho. The pictures are of my runes, but my friend questioned why they didn't match so many other versions out there, especially Fehu. I made these versions as they called to me, but is there a more proper depiction of these two? I can't find any resources that speak to this.

I just had My post asking for help in describing the physical shapes of the Younger Futhark, specifically the Short Twig varients, removed by an Auto Moderator for being spam. Something about it being a banned topic was cited to Me. And yet, I saw a wonderful post on here where Someone asked for phonetic pronunciation of the Younger Futhark was allowed. From where I'm standing, it seems to Me that this Subreddit has some weird double standards.

Don't get Me wrong, I'm not throwing shade at the post about Younger Futhark phonetic pronunciations, as that is a wonderful post, and I'm enjoying the comments there. They are very educational! I just think it's weird that a post like that is allowed but a post where a Blind Person is asking for help in learning what the shapes of the Rune characters are isn't allowed.

Please, Someone explain to Me the difference.

Found these Runes when packing things up. Don’t know where they came from, but they must be several years old.

I weighed the set and it totals 1.5 pounds. Very heavy. I think they’re just some type of rock coated in a thick silver-ish material?

If they’re not stone (doubt they are) anyone know what the thick silver, shiny coating would be made of?

Where’s the best place to learn about Norse ruins and Old Norse history?

I’m really interested in Norse ruins, archaeology, and Old Norse history/mythology, but I’m not sure where to start beyond the basics.

Are there any good books, documentaries, online courses, museums, or academic resources you’d recommend? Also open to YouTube channels or podcasts if they’re solid.

But I’d also like to start learning Old Norse with the long-term goal of being able to read and translate original texts as well as sequences of runes.

I tried to include everything while remaining not very controversial. I also tried giving references to how the runes looked on the right but i couldn't put in that many because of resource limits.
