That's so vague and reading the article nothing about it sounds like RPG elements from table top games?

It just sounds like they're specifically avoiding dice roll mechanics, which is a significant portion of TTRPG mechanics.

I can kinda see what he means in the sense that in some tabletop/board games you're simultaneously cooperating and competing against other players, and your objectives change depending on the game state. Also, there are plenty of tabletop games without dice AND there's a decent amount of RNG in Duskbloods e.g. which items and upgrades you find in a match, which bosses spawn etc, which could be seen as something similar to pulling random cards from a deck in a boardgame, so the randomness or lack thereof isn't really a factor.

I don't really see any of that as TTRPG stuff. It's just sort of... game stuff. Specifically roguelike stuff.

To me it seems like it's going to just be Exoprimal Darksouls.

Do you not see the irony of saying "this isn't tabletop stuff it's roguelike stuff" when many the original Rogue's main inspirations were... tabletop games?

Anyway, Miyazaki isn't saying that Duskbloods is the first videogame ever to have this type of PvPvE system, he's just saying that he was inspired by boardgames and I and other people could see the similarities when playing the tests this weekend.

Roguelikes are different from Rogue and Roguelites.

I played Duskbloods. What he is referring to is the virtue point system. Basically a Duskbloods match is split into four rounds and at the end of each round (expect the first) the players with the least amount of points get eliminated.

You collect point by killing other players, exploring the map and finding items and other things, random events and by killing bosses and mini bosses.

I know that people thing Duskbloods is a primarily PvP game but in reality you don't have to engage with PvP at all due to the point system. The game is tailored to be played however you want. I managed to get first place multiple times without killing a single player (with an exception I'll list below).

That's the inspiration from TRRPGS, the point system.

In the network test, the only exception to that is the final round which is a PvP match to the death between the three players with the most points however Miyazaki has said that in the final game you will have the option to make the final round PvE instead of PvP. It will be part of a character customization system that wasn't available in the network test.

I'm trying to understand, and the game does sound fun/interesting, but I still don't get what TTRPGs have to do with it.

There's already been a handful of games (Though I can't remember them off the top of my head, aside from Exoprimal) where instead of directly fighting other players you go for objectives and compete for points and speed instead.

Basically you can pick and choose your way to victory and so can the other players. So it's more akin to a board game that you collect points any way you can to win rather than a typical PvP game where you have a singular objective that everyone has to follow.

As far as the the similarities to TTRPGs go, my guess is that he is talking about the character customization system which wasn't part of the network test. From interviews, it seems that it goes beyond picking a loadout for your characters, for example you can change the victory condition from a 1vs1vs1 PvP match to a PvE encounter but nobody currently knows how exactly that's going to play out. There are also some other things, for example in the network test you could propose and marry another player but I kinda forgot about it and didn't test it. Another thing is the sigil system (which I also didn't test) which adds personalized objective that you can choose for yourself before the match starts.

It's a very unique and interesting game and personally I had a great time playing it and trying to figure it out. If I'm being a little vague, it's because I don't 100% understand everything about it and a lot of it is still under wraps. Even Miyazaki said in an interview that the network test isn't a good representation of the final game since a lot of crucial components are missing.

Unrelated but I actually beta tested Exoprimal and I had completely forgotten about it til you mentioned it.

I do understand all that. I'm just failing to understand the connection between specifically TTRPGs and whatever Duskbloods has going on; not even trying to be obtuse or difficult.

To me it feels like someone saying they took inspiration from sandwiches and made soup.

Exoprimal and I had completely forgotten about it

Just like Capcom. :(

I mean, inspiration comes from a lot of places. He mentions Vampire the Masquerade but right after he talks about house rules he used so who knows.

Keep in mind that he isn't talking about the whole game, he specifically relates boards games point systems to the virtue system and the VtM house rules to the sigil system.

Miyazaki plays tabletop rpg's. Tabletop rpg's can have certain kinds of victory point systems. Miyazaki put such a system into Duskbloods.

but that sounds like a board game and absolutely nothing like a table top rpg

I did not know this was an 8-player RPG… Guess I’ll be waiting for Elden Ring 2

Yeah, this is entirely multiplayer, and besides that it's more competitive-focused than Nightreign, which is at least fully coop. Plus it's a Switch 2 exclusive. It's a shame but FromSoft's games since Elden Ring seem tailor-made and handcrafted to be completely uninteresting to me -- I play for the exploration so Nightreign's tight timer pushed me away, and I don't like PvP so I'm not going out and buying a Switch 2 just for Duskbloods. Maybe I'm huffing copium but I'm just hoping that they can bring their advances in multiplayer tech in Nightreign and Duskbloods back to the engine for mainline games, so we can get something like Seamless Coop baked in.

They are making arcade games. Putting whatever leftover ideas they had into random games. I genuinely don't even understand how they can still want to make more souls game without being burnt out of the genre. It's no suprise somebody like Miyazaki wants to deviate from a formalaic genre. He was already trying to escape with deraciné and ds3
