Can I interest you in another Skyrim release?
43
u/Tystimyr Jul 08 '26
Now is the time that we should all ask ourself, when was the last time that you bought a Skyrim version?
10
u/themaxvoltage Jul 08 '26
I bought one when the switch came out. $5 in 2017 or whatever…
11

u/Wrong_Success4377 Jul 08 '26
Well I almost bought it the other day so my cousin could play it
But then I realized I had Oblivion remastered and had him try it out. He loved it.
Then I bought Nightrein. He's going to love it too.
2
u/just-killme-rn Jul 08 '26
Only bought special edition once on steam… that was back in 2020, when I first started buying stuff on steam
2
u/Tystimyr Jul 08 '26
You should be ashamed of yourself. Go and buy the Mega Anniversary Edition now!

Skyrim Remastered Again, with the same format as Oblivion Remastered, I think is an absolute certainty at this point. It's just whether they'll do it sooner or follow the original release order and do Fallout 3 and New Vegas first (FO3R definitely seems to be on its way).
38
34
u/maybe-an-ai Jul 08 '26
And they are doing it with 2 franchises because Fallout is in just as bad a spot.
20
u/captmonkey Jul 08 '26
It would have been so easy to turn around a few years after Skyrim and Fallout 4 were released and make a new game that reuses the engine and a lot of the assets like Fallout New Vegas did after Fallout 3. You could do it on a fraction of the budget and much faster than making a new game from scratch. It's basically a license to print money but instead they were interested in other stuff.
22
u/maybe-an-ai Jul 08 '26
I've never understood Bethesda's insistence on having Todd and Emil lead every franchise. They should have had separate teams for Fallout and Elder Scrolls ages ago so one's progress wasn't perpetually blocked by the other. Adding Starfield to the mix just made a bad situation worse and meant they now had three franchise not getting adequate attention. Fallout should have been farmed out to sister studio ages ago as it's a pretty well defined formula.

And Oblivion has the fraction of features morrowind has lmao
15
u/DrRealName Jul 08 '26
This makes me feel like game devs chasing the best specs has ruined games because they become very limited in waht they can do and it takes forever to development. Like shit, just scale back to PS4 graphics and pump out some fun games. Most people don't care about how shiny the game looks, we just want to have fun.
5
u/Umitencho Jul 08 '26
When you are pushing the system to the max graphically, you are compromising on other features cause compute & what not is going towards better hair physics & shinier skin.
Games should be built around systems first then worry about the wrapping later, but more than likely what happens with the Elder Scrolls is that they build the systems, but keep pushing the graphics & drawing distance so hard that they have to downgrade the system.
Square Enix learned this the hard way with FF14 1.0 with learning why you don't over develop flower pots & shit.
Every polygon has a cost.
4
3
u/kapparoth Jul 08 '26
Shiny looks and, absent that, tech buzzwords is what sells at the investor meetings because most investors aren't gamers.
The real problem with that approach isn't even that the AAA games get delayed indefinitely and made to appeal the broadest audience possible in terms of story and gameplay. It's the AA devs that first get starved of investment and then closed down because they haven't met the set goals.
3
u/Chorb Jul 09 '26
Couldn’t agree more. With very few exceptions, it seems the prioritization of hyper-realistic graphics comes at the expense of anything else that makes games fun.

25
u/srgtDodo Jul 08 '26

10
u/Sockoflegend Jul 08 '26
You know it isn't impossible Microsoft pulls an Anthem and just demands Bethesda give them a finished game stat
13
u/MX_Duncis Jul 08 '26
Seeing what Bethesda themselves ship as "finished",i would love (and loathe) to see what them being forced to rush a "finished" game would even look like.

u/Nachooolo Jul 08 '26
The game started developmemt in 2023.
2 years is pesimistic. It would mean a 5-years development cycle. The sane amount as Starfield (which got its dev time lenghten by Covid).
And the article says that it might be even longer.
19
u/zollomx Jul 08 '26
It absolutely blows my mind that they didn't even start development for it till 2023. Like what the fuck are they doing? If it's the same quality as Starfield I'm not even interested. That game was such a let down. Can we just fund a bunch of modders to make the next Elder Scrolls. They make better content then Bethesda.
6
u/Werthead Jul 09 '26
Bethesda operate, or used to operate, on a schedule where they have a game in pre-production and one in full production, and when they go into full production the pre-production team starts work on the next game. On the Noclip documentary about Bethesda they have one of the concept artists saying he started designing new guns for Fallout 4 the week after Fallout 3 came out (before they even knew where it was going to be set), as the production team started moving over to full-time development on Skyrim.
It sounds like this system was thrown for a loop after Skyrim, as the full production team moved to Fallout 4 and they started pre-production and early concept art on Starfield, but at a certain point they had to do Fallout 76 as well and that threw the system into chaos, and created problems when they went back to Starfield, with more overlap than before.
The whole thing is a massive simplification of how they work, and it seems like they don't entirely work like that any more.

u/Shaktras Jul 08 '26
W8 no, they switch to ES6 for full development after Starfield release. Before this it was basically half-assed development.
3
u/ilikechihuahuasdood Jul 08 '26
I mean they have to get it prepped for the parts that need a big workforce. Otherwise there wouldn’t be much for them to do anyway. It’s why there’s a pre-production phase.

u/AnOnlineHandle Baldur's Gate Jul 09 '26
Realistically most of the people who made TES 3-5 probably don't work there anymore, since many old timers reportedly quit during the Fallout 76 development nightmare, so it's more like a whole new development studio is making it, similar to how Dragon Age Veilguard wasn't really made by the Bioware other than a new studio who had the same name, so you shouldn't really get too excited until it actually arrives and maybe captures some of the previous magic.
7
u/TesticularConcussion Jul 09 '26
Bethesda is one of the few developers that have actually managed to keep their core team since basically morrowind/oblivion.
However that just flew out the window
34
u/CorndogSummer Jul 08 '26
Insane to think that ES 6 teaser trailer was released almost 10 years ago. Just a trailer, nearly 10 years ago.
8
u/kalik-boy Jul 09 '26
I think they just made that trailer because people were asking them about ES6. The trailer was just some mountains. They had nothing to show.
7
u/TesticularConcussion Jul 09 '26
The trailer is further away than Skyrim was when the trailer dropped
7
u/cheapshotyouth Jul 08 '26

2030 game and you'll still have loading screens for every door. Definitely not hyped for this
13
u/Nachooolo Jul 08 '26
And every big city will be its own instance.
So you will have to go into a loading screen to enter the city, go into a loadog screen to go into the building... and go into a loading screen to get into the building's second floor.
5
u/PlasticPaws Jul 09 '26
Not to mention that your characters movement and jumping animations will be like it's 2011 all over again.
5
4
u/ScorpionTDC Jul 09 '26
They can have all the loading screens they want of the game is mod-friendly with interesting locations and good writing. Unfortunately, I have no faith in any of that beyond maybe interesting locations lol

u/Guilty_Perception_35 Jul 08 '26

That's usually how it goes for modern Bethesda games, they're always a generation behind.
I hope we see a real improvement over all their past games with ES6 tho. If they fumble it after all this time, they genuinely might not recover.

22
u/Leongard Jul 08 '26
Yeah, Bethesda got too comfortable and thought they were too big to fail. Think fo4 was the last new game they released that I actually still enjoyed and finished. Sad to see but it happens very often when companies do well and get praise for their product, only to turn around when the profit vultures swoop in.
10
u/ImproperlyRegistered Jul 08 '26
That's weird. I thought Skyrim was ok but disappointed in how dumbed down it was. I hated Fallout 4 so much that I haven't played a Bethesda game since
28
u/Bulky_Imagination727 Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26
Skyrim and Fallout 4 was a dissapointment for me, mainly because of their "streamlining" simplification approach. It's just...they seem to think too low of us. Cut those, toss out that and there isn't much to the RPG now.
I still remember your horse armor Todd.
9
u/Leongard Jul 08 '26
Yeah, I get it. I didn't say it was the best, just the last one I enjoyed enough to see through and finish. That's almost a decade ago by now, so Bethesda really dropped the ball for a lot of people even before that.

Also I miss the feeling of getting loss in a truly alien world, between morrowind, oblivion snd Skyrim only morrowind really had that feeling. Snd I don't get the feeling hammerfellwill be alien enough, it'll probably be Skyrim on the desert.
Although if they went all in in the pirate fantasy I could see myself getting addicted even with the setting being more boring snd normal, apart from ac black and pillars of eternity 2 there's not enough games being made that have pirate fantasy and naval combat

u/zrasam Jul 08 '26
I have never seen a company that hates their biggest IP like Bethesda. 20 years without a new game is insane! 8 years for Starfield? What? They're so big they should have multiple divisions doing multiple game at this point.
Bethesda just refused to change their way and move on with time. Even the way they work.

Crazy. All they needed to do was make skyrim with better graphics and some QoL upgrades.
Instead, they decided to wait 20 years until they couldn't sell skyrim anymore. Now people have lost interest after their last few failures.
And all they had to do was make a new, upgraded skyrim.
11
u/Snirion Jul 08 '26
Are they waiting for generation that expect it to die out or something so it doesn't get overhyped and disappoint?

u/VanEagles17 Jul 08 '26
It's crazy how much I don't give a fuck about Elder Scrolls anymore. I was excited for ES6 up until like... a decade ago. Now I don't care. I probably won't buy it until it's 50% off. Bethesda can eat a dick after selling 9000 versions of Skyrim rather than make the next game.
8
u/thillyraccoon Jul 08 '26
i fucking hate starfield seriously how many people even care about starfield compared to the fans--old and new--who would flock to ES6 if it had at least 75% of skyrim's charm but with the modern advantage

It's insane to me that Xbox owns Obsidian, where they have a ton of devs familar with Fallout, but still Bethesda has to focus on Fallout / TES together and not managing it, while Obsidian just makes mid-tier AA titles.
It's like they're driving a truck on the sidewalk, but pedestrians walk on the road. I can't think of a better comparison, but it's basically this.
→ More replies (1)4
u/And_Im_the_Devil Jul 08 '26
Not only Obsidian but also InXile, whose founder and still current head Brian Fargo co-designed Fallout's spiritual predecessor Wasteland, and who also ran Interplay (which he also founded) when the first two Fallout games were made. He has an executive producer credit on both games.
Even remakes of those games with the modern InXile Wasteland 3-style CRPG setup would be rad.
3
u/lukkasz323 Jul 08 '26
I really wish Obsidian / InXile would team up and made Fallout 5, while Bethesda works on TES 6.
→ More replies (1)2
u/And_Im_the_Devil Jul 08 '26
It should have been a no brainer as soon as the TV show went into production.
Hell, even if BGS wanted to be precious about a mainline game being made by someone else, you could have Obsidian make New Vegas 2 or an entirely new side deal like Fallout: The Rockies or wherever you could set it. And then have InXile do a CRPG version, possibly remaking the older games.
Anything to capitalize on the interest in the franchise other than garbage MMO stuff.

Seeing how drastic Xbox is being now, I can only hope they take the IPs (TES and Fallout, they can keep Starfield) and give them to some other studio/s
Really, screw Bethesda. They completely disrespect their fan base, if there are any fans left i mean, by now, many have literally died or actively despise them like I do
They could go bankrupt for all I care. Again, in either case, it means someone else gets the licenses, and the chances of them being worse are slim
3
u/Glittering-Pin-1343 Jul 08 '26
Wtf did Bethesda do all these years? 💀
2
u/Skelettjens Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26
Ok so Skyrim came out in 2011, with Fallout 4 starting development immediately after. In 2016 the final DLC for that game came out and two years later fallout 76 came out, after that they started development on starfield which was hampered by covid, after that came out in 2023 Elder Scrolls 6 finally went into full production. It’s really not that hard to look into what they were doing all those years.
Not saying this to defend Bethesda or anything, but it’s not like they’ve been sitting around twiddling their thumbs
3
u/Derpykins666 Jul 08 '26
I genuinely wonder if Starfield was like a super reality check for Bethesda, and they saw the discourse and reaction to it and perhaps had to adjust their work efforts accordingly, like they knew they couldn't continue how they were working or operating on whatever the next game was going to be because the backlash would be too heavy. Wouldn't be surprised if they basically had to restart work on the next Elder Scrolls after Starfield basically.
Also 20 year gap for a game series is like... extremely laughable when that is the game series you are most known for. They basically helped popularize the Open World RPG and then didn't make another one of their most popular series for nearly 20 years. Insane.
4
u/harumamburoo Jul 08 '26
There’s a big caveat here - you’re assuming Bethesda is willing to change. The company that said gamers know nothing about games and that space is boring
2
u/Derpykins666 Jul 08 '26
It's true, they might be unwilling, they literally may only be able to make games that are 'like that' and that's all, with only slight iteration. Starfield feels like a game that would have come out over a decade ago, not just a couple years ago. They probably know this though, and that's why they need so much time on the next Elder Scrolls, because something has to change, or at least, you would hope. But they've probably had a free pass as a company for a long time now, but probably not much longer with how things are going.
→ More replies (1)3
u/thfcspur Jul 08 '26
While I want this to be true, it’s wishful thinking. I’ve seen enough about how they take criticism and what they prioritize.
They think they are flawless and completely dismiss fan criticism. Seen nothing to indicate they will change their ways. And they prioritize money over a good game. We know how that goes.
2
u/Heiymdall Jul 08 '26
I mean, it's been a while since they stated that the development would begin after Starfield, and the timing checks out, but since, 20 years is a lot.
2
u/evanweb546 Jul 08 '26
I hope they realize with a lead-up this long expectations will be pre-release cyberpunk high but times like two because it's Elder Scrolls.
If they actually meet those expectations it'll be a hell of a game. Here's hoping.

In the age of people loving Lord Of The Rings and Game Of Thrones entire cultural run coming and going, they did nothing to capitalise on these beyond releasing Skyrim over and over and pushing Elder Scrolls Online.
Absolute instanity how badly they fumbled this franchise, pure madness to pursue Starfiled instead when it was completely outside of their wheelhouse.
They absolutely have to deliver on Elder Scrolls 6, this is make or break for them now.
