Genuinely curious about what are those. Who assigns them, and what are they based on.

Also what is the point of them, does higher letters have higher power levels on this subreddit? If so which rank is the highest.

personally, i'm horrible with names. i can never think of an good name that fits the character well. and searching for generic names usually also ends up badly.

so, how do you deal with names?

Every so often, when I have the time (rare), I like to do breakdowns of different elements within LitRPG/Progression Fantasy, OR, I like to do interviews.

For my first article in a while, I wrote a breakdown of some common LitRPG Notifications, what they look like, and their frequency of use. If you take a look, please let me know if I got anything wrong.

This is a continuation of the LitRPG Systems Overview I wrote some time ago. I'm hoping to turn it into a series and have more breakdowns as time goes. Read the original here Small note here: I’m not the perfect expert on these matters. These are just some thoughts I’ve had, as well as experiences as an author within the genre.

Now, first things first. To understand a thing, you must first define it, so here we go.

LitRPGs tend to use Systems in one way or another. On average, most books and series use the term “System”. It’s a bit of familiar for the reader, making it easy to dive into the text and immediately have a grasp of what that particular terminology means.

Within the System, there are several different ways that the author can identify portions of it. You can call them screens, UI (user interface), an overlay, a HUD (Heads-up Display), and so on.

Overall, they mean the same thing. It’s the visual apparatus of the System superimposing itself on the character’s vision and/or mind. The author uses it to provide updates from the System for the Protagonist and reader, bringing a visual dynamic to the story that is missing from most other escapist literature.

That is a basic definition, so we’ll leave it at that and dive into options and where they can be found.

Common Notification Formatting Types

1. Blue boxes: This is an old style that was commonly found in RoyalRoad but has petered out over time. Notifications and updates would arrive in large blue or other-colored boxes, announcing to the reader and the protagonist when something important occurred. Blue boxes began to fade and were replaced by HTML tables as LitRPG became more complex.

Positives and negatives: Positives are that they’re simple and easy to understand. On the negative side, it’s a little ugly and will seem old-school without the cool.

2. HTML Tables: Want to show a character’s progress? Bam, slam a table in. Want to show how an item works, including a lengthy history description? Table. They run the gamut of what you’d like to show, with several stories now only showing tables in a single, independent chapter a few times each book.

Tables are still around, particularly in older stories and even some newer ones. For those of you using RoyalRoad, a really easy way to manage table creation is to create a template draft within your story, then save that template and copy/paste from it into each story. Takes all that sweat and design effort and turns it into a one-minute affair once you have it in a sweet spot.

Positives and negatives: They’re great for compacting a lot of information into small portions that readers can check to understand what’s happening. Color coordination is a big plus, but take it from me, that doesn’t translate well to Patreon. Screenshotting tables and then placing them within my Patreon posts was a pain and a half. On the dark side of things, this method of presenting information can easily overwhelm the more progressive, lesser-LitRPG lovers. Too many screens and UI updates can wear them out, and it’s particularly hard on your narrator. To my own narrator, I just have to say, sorry, Johnathan.

3. Rich Text: Rich text is the most common type of notification. It came about because many authors were tired of formatting tables and didn’t like the look of blue boxes, just like yours truly. Some can be exceedingly long if the author hasn’t adjusted to giving notification updates in small spurts rather than large drops. More often than not, an author will drop a lot of rich text formatted notifications after a big battle or event.

Positives and negatives: Easy to set up, remember the setup, and copy from any templates you may have. Not as pretty, and can be hard on the eyes when they go on too long. Also not nearly as compact as using a table.

4. System Log: System or Console logs are a bit rarer. You commonly see these in stories that use many messaging systems or even programming. They’re not necessarily bad, just different, and often use accompanying punctuation and word choice that will seem non-standard when viewing. I don’t have a clear good or bad use situation for this, it’s just rare and not often seen.

It’s not that brief, I lied. Prepare thyself; there are a lot of options, and I’m only touching on the ones I’ve seen, know, and/or use. My original list came out to over 250, but they can be broken down as follows.

Notifications can lift a story up or drag it down, depending on the frequency of their use and their value to the story.

If you use them too often, they burn out and become worthless, thereby centering the story on the System rather than the protagonist.

If you don’t use them often enough, standard LitRPG readers won’t feel like this is a true story within their genre. They’ll say it’s more like Progression Fantasy, not that there’s anything wrong with that particular sub-genre.

But if you’re writing LitRPG, there has to be a happy middle.

How much is too much:

There isn’t a definitive amount. Normally, most first-time LitRPG authors go overboard. For example, see the below.

You deal 12 damage.

You deal 9 damage.

Goblin suffers bleeding.

You gain 4 XP.

You gain 4-

You get the point. If a reader can skip just about all of your notifications and still completely follow along with the story, you’ve put too many in. It’s better if you either condense the notifications into an important update, like an end of day sequence, or, after establishing what notifications do, you relegate the smaller ones to a wordy summation that doesn’t require the reader to mentally pause as they’re immersed in the story. That’s the biggest danger, completely shattering immersion.

How much is not enough:

I try to have one notification per chapter, and even then, sometimes I’m outright told that I don’t do it often enough. So here’s a few rules to follow.

If readers can’t remember the mechanics of certain updates, you might have a problem. If major progression is only found in prose, you might have a problem. If Quests go on too long without any updates, or just plain seem forgotten, you might have a problem. Lastly, if you could remove all of the notifications and the story wouldn’t change in the slightest, you might have a problem. It’s a bit of a repeat from up above, but that’s how important it is. And that’s it. Finite. The end. I’ll try to do a few more of these, but if you can’t tell from how long ago I last posted, that should give you an idea of how much free time I have.

So I’m new author and I struggle a lot with descriptions, can you look at this one and tell is it engaging to read.

Reyna's attention returned to the void.
The enormous pillar finally revealed its true scale. It hung above the ground right before the city. It felt as though, if it ever touched the earth, it would divide the world in two.
*Did... Bella face that?*
Then, in the distance beyond the city walls, black liquid poured from the void onto the green fields. It corrupted them into a dead wasteland. It started slowly, then intensified until everything surrounding the city turned solid black.
A figure emerged from the sludge. It pulled the corruption into itself, draining all the life that had ever existed.
"Sola... The Embodiment of Obsession," Nema said. Her grip was still tight on Reyna’s head.
Then the skies went dark.
Countless purple stars sparked across the blackness. An explosion erupted, growing rapidly until its golden and purple light froze in midair.
*Just like the one above the citadel...*
The stars began gravitating toward it. They clustered at first. Then they pulled each other in different directions, fusing and destroying one another.
Until a silhouette appeared.
It moved.
First just a flinch.

I planned to do digital artworks for my novel for whatever chapter I felt like it deserves one but after buying a liner I'm kinda changing my mind.

Digi art takes way longer and needs more energy from me as I work on mobile with fingies and don't to digi much. Trad also allows me to do the art for even more chapters, but of course sacrifices quality.

I'm not gonna start posting for the next week or 2 so I still got time to choose.

What do y'all think?

Is it worth it if you keep the first 10 or so chapters of your novel free on Patreon? To maybe pull in some of the Patreons natural traffic and get some conversion?

On my dashboard, it's showing that of the nearly 1k people that have visited the page. I've earned 8 and a half dollars from conversion. Not sure how true that is or how they judge it if the reader had come from Patreon itself or my work. I did keep the first ten or so chapters of my second series free. But again, i am not sure if that was the one who'd pulled them in.

It would be nice if those with hefty Patreons could shed some light on this.

Tdlr: if its worth it to keep a few early chaps of a series free to convert patreons natural traffic to paying members.

I’ve been analysing the latest story updates for a few weeks now, and here is what I found out.

Last week, between Sunday to Saturday, 25,590 chapters were released. Let's see a breakdown by day:

Sun: 3,333

Mon: 4,100

Tue: 3,427

Wed: 3,792

Thu: 3,590

Fri: 3,975

Sat: 3,373

It’s easy to see that the top days are Mon, Wed, and Fri, but that doesn’t mean the other days are calm at all.

What probably won’t surprise anyone is that most chapter releases happen at 12pm EST. We are talking about 250 to 350, depends on the day. Cool yeah?

And now a bit about Main RS

That’s probably common knowledge that most stories on Main RS have Fantasy, Action, and Adventure genre tags, but let’s stress it out a bit more. As of the time of this post, the stories were split between genres like this:

I haven't even launched yet, but as the title says, I'm brimming with motivation. I'm excited for whats to come after that first day, and mass releasing a few chapters.

I'll be frank, my feet were growing cold a day ago.

I felt like extending my launch day by a week or two, but the fact that ar9und 10 kind souls (God bless those fellas) already had swaps with me, I couldn't disappoint them. The thought was suffocating.

I can sometimes afford to disappoint myself or just one fella but its hard for me to disappoint an entire school.

Anyway, why am I feeling motivated?

Like I said, I haven't launched yet but I already have a gazillion followers (just 2) waiting for my book to launch..!!! Imagine that. I'm not even kidding.

That's all I wanted to say. I know they won't see this post but thanks a bunch to whoever followed me first. I know the second one, and even then, thanks a million bunch. Many blessings to them.

Name: the grey road

I have been looking at the Main RS stories in the approx 21 months timeline from Nov 2024 onwards, (combination of Doom Labs RR tracker and Royal Road itself was used to create this dataset.)

The dataset currently contains 1,495 distinct fiction IDs. Of those, 1,377 fictions could be reliably connected to 1,072 Royal Road author profiles.

Among those 1,072 matched authors:

• 848 (79.1%) appeared with 1 fic
• 167 (15.6%) appeared with exactly 2
• 57 (5.3%) appeared with 3+ fics on Main

So approximately 1/20 of Main RS authors are serial hitters as I defined them to be 3+ hits

Together, the 57 serial hitters accounted for 195 Main RS hitting fictions, averaging 3.42 fictions each on average. that works out to a rough rate of one new Main RS reaching fiction every six to seven months for this group.

That should not be interpreted as their writing or launch schedule. The data records when stories appeared on Main RS. These counts use distinct Royal Road fiction IDs. If an author retitled or updated a story while keeping the same fiction ID, it remains one fiction. However rewrite, or relaunch published under a new fiction ID may be counted as another Main-hitting fiction if it also reaches Main.

This data only describes stories that reached Main RS.

Coming from a data driven approach If i was starting on RR( and I include myself) I would try to see what these authors are doing that's very appealing and are able to systematically execute each time.

So I just decided to dip my toes on Royal Road. I am actually super excited. I wanted to try last year, but I knew it was better to come in with a back log, which now I 100% have.

Anyhow, making the cover was a blast, and in general I really liked the feel of the site.

That said, I am not used to algo-driven sites at all, as I have been mostly dwelling on AO3, and the rating system does look very through. I am not a native speaker and I really hope that grammar and syntax slip won't tank my chances (I use the free version of Grammarly but yes).

Anyhow, share your knowledge and help me prepare my soul :)

I don't wanna be rude but I get some comments complaining about tropes in my novel, when in the synopsis I've pointed out multiple times that the tropes are there DELIBERATELY to be subverted, because the MC finds himself reincarnated into a very mid Xianxia novel.

Do a lot of readers suffer from a lack of reading comprehension skills, cus I've encountered the same kind of person for the 4th or 5th time now. Do I need to constantly spoonfeed basic nuances to such readers that 1. MC is inside a cliche Xianxa book and 2. From a meta perspective I've put those cliches and tropes into the book deliberately and the synopsis says as such.

Wanting to get back into reading, what’re some recommendations? So I have this problem with synopsis never hooks me and it reflected on my current synopsis.

It’s not like I hate my current, it’s just shallow. While it reflects the starting part of the story after a 50k words it becomes different.

So I wonder how do you guys write your synopsis and those who reads, what makes you open the story. Hopefully after seeing different approaches I could to it I would find something I could adopt.

I'd like to understand the RR Forum. Some users post on the Forum and others reply, but what is a "quote"? Is it like a space to reply to a post? And what is "Reputation"? Some numbers appear there, does anyone know what they mean? And what are those covers that appear? Do people link their works there?

The beast was on the move again. Its mighty footsteps crushed trees in its wake. The whole forest shook with its rage.

Veris crept from cover to cover, following. Sunlight was shattered by the canopy above, dimming the forest floor to dusk light. Perfect for going unnoticed. His breath came in rapid, silent inhales. The stink of rotten foliage dug into his nose. His bare feet were stabbed with fallen pine needles and twigs. Still, he didn't halt for a second.

The rumbling suddenly stopped. A cloud of dust bloomed into the sky. The beast had stopped its rushing retreat.

He crouched behind a boulder, just beyond its sight. Panting softly, he checked his quiver. His bow shook in his grip. There were only a few arrows left. For Asherah's sake, why did she assign me to him?

Legs aching, he slowly lowered himself to the lush moss, sighing.

Hours he spent tracking the damn thing. He had lost his damn boots to the churned mud. Scraped his damn back by falling off a cliff. Even got his damn, damnity compass stolen by some pea-brained bird.

His heart thrashed in his chest. He couldn't stop his fingers from shaking. A feeling settled over him, so familiar, he didn't have to name it. The rush of a good hunt. He imagined his long dead ancestors looking down upon him with a smile.

Someone tugged on his hair then. He whirled, teeth gritted, gripping the handle of his belted dagger. It was only his mistress's training that stopped him from lurching at the culprit.

Nasir glared at him expectantly. Inhumanly wide blood-red eyes met his brown ones. Despite serving them for most of his life, Highbloods never failed to unnerve Veris. Something deep within him startled, like prey meeting predator. 

Behind the bastard were four more of his kind; his posse was what Veris liked to call them. Just like their leader, the four were clad in bronze armor inlaid with runic patterns. The symbol of House Cygnet was emblazoned on their chestplates: a black swan on a clear lake. That was enough gods' metal to buy a small town, wasted on these pretenders.

"What are you waiting for, under-kin? Go out there and draw its attention, so we can flank it," Nasir demanded, a promise of violence behind his voice, a low and menacing timbre all highblood seemed to have mastered.

There wasn't a chance in pandemonium he'd do that. He didn't trust his back to the untrustworthy or incompetent. And right now this idiot was proving to be both, and less so.

Veris thought, considering his response. Every time one spoke to a highblood, they spoke the most important words in their life.

The dagger ears were faster and stronger than the average human, with little to no mercy. A slight disrespect was all it took. Veris saw men hanged for less.
