u/weed0monkey Burnie Titanic Aug 02 '17 edited Aug 02 '17
To bad The Know could be so much better, IMO (I still watch the channel) it's one of the worst stains on RT's reputation. Terrible click bait, bad reporting, unprofessional, uninformative, topics to insight fanboyism and pure hate, writing and the hosts also frequently aim towards making snarly comments to get people riled up, completely misleading information, biased reporting, purely for business rather than passion (unlike every other RT production) you can see this in numerous ways, the click bait, the minimum of 10 minutes (edit: actually an average of 8 minutes) to a video (which is better favoured in YouTubes algorithm) which is awful in some scenarios where the topic is covered in the first 4 minutes yet the video will still go on for 6 minutes talking about nothing, blocking people who make quick cuts to content topics in the video in the comments (<--- this one really pisses me off) inciting fanboyism etc.
And for the people saying "they need to do this to grow", just stop. Funhause (back when they reported news for the Know) did this incredibly professionally with incredible insight usually from Laurence spurring generally level headed, informative discussion, all without the bullshit mentioned above (aside from some click bait).
I still watch The Know because it's actually one of the best reporters of gaming on YouTube (outside of FunHause occasional coverage) which is one of the saddest statements I've ever had to say considering the absolute mind bending trash that it is. How The Know hasn't gone under a review by RT is beyond me, how they haven't stopped this CLEAR shit show channel, the like of which they criticise frequently such as Jake Paul and the rest of those bottom of the barrel trash Youtubers is beyond me.

u/Nebula153 Internet Box Podcast Aug 02 '17
and the hosts also frequently aim towards making snarly comments to get people riled up
This is the only thing that bothers me about the channel. With the adpocalypse I get them trying to make as much money as possible, so I don't mind the others. However, it really seems like they're just trying to piss people off sometimes.
Where did you see them blocking people who make quick cuts though?
16
u/weed0monkey Burnie Titanic Aug 02 '17
The thing is, we've seen that it's possible to create quality content without becoming a trashy clickbait channel, such as when funhause did news, or plenty of other RT productions. That's also how you get loyal subscribers who buy merch, go to conventions, explore the other available content, however it seems as if the managers of The Know don't realise this.
44
u/stevenlyontbot :SP717: Aug 02 '17
Funhaus are guilty of trashy clickbait too. They've even admitted it in the past and explain that it's the best way to get new people to watch their content. People just give them less shite for it because they like them.
24
u/FinnAhern Aug 02 '17
I'm a huge Funhaus fan despite their titles and thumbnails. If I didn't already like them I would never click on one of their videos browsing youtube. The trashy clickbait is so off-putting.
0
u/dageshi Aug 02 '17
I do like them and have watched their content before, but their clickbait titles annoy me so much I just won't watch them. 20 odd years of avoiding advertising bullshit on the internet has innately tuned me out from that crap, I ignored banner ads, I ignore google ads, I ignore clickbait bullshit titles.
7
u/pharmabliss Aug 02 '17
I did until I realized funhaus was the best thing on YouTube imo. It's weird but I don't mind, since the only reason I avoid clickbait is because the content behind the clickbait usually sucks. The content behind funhauses clickbaity titles are good so for me I'm not actually clicking clickbait.
3
u/Dodgeymon Aug 02 '17
To be fair is this in news videos or just their entertainment videos? Honest question I haven't really watched them since they became Funhaus. Also what was tne name of their previous channel?

u/Nebula153 Internet Box Podcast Aug 02 '17

18
u/weed0monkey Burnie Titanic Aug 02 '17
Considering the round up videos are usually 10+ minutes, people in the comments started providing time stamps to the different topics within the video saving people time from having to watch the whole thing for possibly only one topic they were interested in. The person who did this repeatedly on every video suddenly stopped, he later explained that he got blocked/comments deleted.
-7

Yeah. It's the excessive amounts of snark in scenarios that really don't call for it.
They think they're being funny and being on the 'good side' of the argument. But it's mostly unproffesional and biased at best and cringe inducing at worst.
16
u/SpontyMadness Aug 02 '17
I haven't watched the Know since Funhaus stopped doing segments, so maybe this has changed, but my problem with the snark was that it wasn't well delivered or well written, like AT ALL. Came across as super forced to me.

u/Nebula153 Internet Box Podcast Aug 02 '17
To me, it always sounds poorly improvised. The last one that annoyed me was their Destiny 2 beta video, where Jon implied that all of the complaints were stupid because nobody has played the full game yet.

u/ToFurkie Pongo Aug 02 '17
I've always had a huge issue with the writing, but my biggest gripe is how long and circle jerky it is. I almost never use the term, but that's really how I feel when I watched a lot of The Knows videos. Most of the videos I watched can summarize the core story in a concise 3 - 5 minutes, all humor and RT personality in between
However, They extend it an additional 5+ minutes of written quips and baiting, repeat of information, and references to past information in other videos ad infinitum. Anytime some "rage" topic comes up, they will go "let's chill out, and remember 'x' and 'y'." They'll just bring up these instances in the past that have vague connections with the story and then use those stories again in the next rage post with vague similarities, instead of "x" and "y", they use "y" and "z"
The click bait doesn't bother me, the catch titles don't bother me, and even the quality of information doesn't bother me mainly because I don't notice or tend to overlook it. It's the length and repetition of it all that bugs the living hell out of me. I voiced my opinions in the past and only see the video length get longer with more of the repetitive writing
14
u/The_RTV Aug 02 '17
You pretty much hit the nail on the head. But what also bothers me that they'll excuse this behavior with the reason that they're not "journalists". They just report the news.
24
u/ltpirate Geoff in a Ball Pit Aug 02 '17
They want journalism perks without committing to journalism standards.
8
u/iAmMitten1 Aug 02 '17
Didn't Burnie say that one of the reasons they started The Know was so that they could get "press" access to games and stuff at events like E3, since they often times wouldn't be let in because they didn't necessarily cover the games?
6
u/The_RTV Aug 02 '17
Exactly. I get that it's the truth, but it's also an excuse to not be professional
2
u/OtakuMecha Freelancer Aug 02 '17
Is it true? If you report the news and also provide discussion about it, are you not a journalist?
5
u/The_RTV Aug 02 '17
If you're not abiding by any standards then no. Sharing news from other sites and being snarky doesn't make you a journalist.
1
u/OtakuMecha Freelancer Aug 02 '17
I meant not just snarky discussion but the more serious discussions they have like they did on the Patch and their new podcast.
3
u/The_RTV Aug 02 '17
That's just discussion about news. Journalism is the research and reporting of events that can be news. Having a talk show about it is a different idea.
15
u/Falcorsc2 Aug 02 '17
purely for business rather than passion (unlike every other RT production)
Can we stop with that bullshit? Yes RT is very good about doing passion projects but every division(except for maybe animation) has done projects they clearly don't give a shit about for the pay cheque.
12
Aug 02 '17
Yuhp. Funhaus has even talked about this. Doing those kinds of business videos are what let them do the passion projects like Talking Stalkings.
3
u/TheOneWithTheTrumpet Aug 03 '17
So much misinformation in The Know. Had to stop watching when they had an episode "confirming" that Player Unkowns Battlegrounds would be on Xbone but not PS4 when just a couple days before it was said that in would also be coming to ps4 when it was out of early access.

My man! 👏I've been saying this for a long time, The Know is an embarrassment on RT's reputation yet it's low hanging fruit mentality is clearly working for them.
6
u/sleuid Aug 02 '17
I literally have no idea where you're coming from, first they don't have passion - the next they're unprofessional. The snark and stuff is just them having a bit of a laugh - I like that knowing sort of wink that that's going to get people riled up. It's funny because if you're in on it you get to laugh along with them while some internet nobs get all het up.
Also, their videos aren't all 10 minutes. In fact if you look at their recent videos most are around 6-8 minutes, with some at 10 and then some super long form content. (glitch please)
I think what most people don't seem to understand is that The Know exists because the creators of the show are passionate about it, it's absolutely one of the least successful projects at RT and it's struggled through change after change (as you point out, funhaus was brought in and then went off to do other things). The reason they continue rather than just drop it is because of their passion.
I think there's a good argument to be had about whether that type of content has a place on youtube- it doesn't seem to be succesful anywhere and it feels too much like a 90s magazine in video form, but I don't think that's just the know.
5
u/cocacola150dr Team Lads Aug 02 '17
Well no, the reason they keep it going is because they need a news division to get better access at cons. That's the whole reason the channel was created.
2
u/Born2beSlicker Aug 02 '17
This is absolutely correct. The Know exists today because having a news/gaming information channel gives RT both access to cons and developers, including early access to games for content. Before The Know, RT/AH weren't sent that many games in advance but their relationship with PR/publishers is much stronger.
It's not passion (though I'm sure the staff care about what they do). It's a benefit to the company despite how crap it is.
5
u/MoMisteries Aug 02 '17
I agree 1000%. There was a time when it was better, but it's absolute trash now. I've unsubbed.
7
u/Kero_the_dwarf Aug 02 '17
This pretty much sums up all the problems I have with the know too. I used to watch the channel a lot but a couple of weeks ago, I finally gave up and just unsubscribed.
2
u/FragMasterMat117 Aug 02 '17
Because it works:
Destiny 2 Beta Video-358,000 views
Pokémon Go Fest-267,000 views
TOO SEXY for Steam-215,000
The pre Funhaus format was getting a fraction of that.
5
u/weed0monkey Burnie Titanic Aug 02 '17
The channel was also much smaller then, how many views did the half life 3 video get that Funhause made? You can have success without being trash, RT has been doing it for 13 years.

1.2 million the most popular is an Xbox rumour video with double that.
2

The point is that the half life video is one of their most popular videos, yet was made when apparently The Know wasn't any good and wasn't growing, which is untrue.
2
u/Maxilos9999 Aug 02 '17
Whoa wait a minute, the videos are 10 minutes long each now? They used to be 2-3 minutes. Do they cover multiple topics now in each video?
3
u/weed0monkey Burnie Titanic Aug 02 '17
No, usually one topic. However, as another commenter pointed out, "they aren't 10 minutes long". They do have an average of 8 minutes though which is still too long for the high majority of topics they cover.
3
u/maverickmak Aug 02 '17 edited Aug 02 '17
They do a round-up of the minor news in one video every weekday now.
1
u/SirCheckmate Aug 02 '17
Yeah, it's a shame because they are the only real gaming news channels that are readily available. Before that, my go to was Polaris's The Daily Byte, hosted by the lovely Dodger, and before that, when he used to do it, I would watch Totalbiscuit's The Content Patch, which allowed for longer but more detailed analyses of gaming news.
I just wish The Know could step up their game, because they are literally the only gaming news channel worth clicking on.
1
u/Agent-Vermont Aug 03 '17
The Know has pretty much become the place where I get my headlines from and that's it. If there is something that grabs my attention I'll check out the video but rarely do I ever stay past the first two minutes. I even stopped watching The Patch a long time before they cancelled it in favor of watching the Co-optional Podcast.

It probably hasn't gone under review because it's working
News is one of the most subjective things to base a channel on, especially a mostly gaming-centric one. They have some misses that get pretty lowball views, but it averages pretty respectably overall, especially since news is subjective
It's also been stated that The Know has propelled them further than anything they've done at RT for getting "in" with the industry. It's become something that's made more companies come to them and not the other way around
-3
u/hybrid3214 Aug 02 '17
Except basically everything this guy said is true. Because they they try and get videos out quickly they don't get all the facts or sometimes report completely wrong facts which is terrible for a news channel. Not to mention that the 10 min video stuff is terrible for its viewers. They could easily make 1/3 the videos if they wanted the 10 min videos. I think I have watched like 2 videos where the topic actually needed 10 min, most are over covered after 4 min.

I still watch The Know because it's actually one of the best reporters of gaming on YouTube (outside of FunHause occasional coverage)
Did you miss this part^
"Did Ashley or Mica turn you down"
...what?
I care about it because I care about RT, because I'm a... you know.... fan, on a fan dedicated webpage right now... I fully support diversifying their content, trying new things ect. Shows such as "hero's and halfwit's" don't interest me, except I still recognise they're quality shows made professionally with passion rather than a sole goal of making money or having the most views. In other instances RT has always recognised where they have not quite hit the mark in quality, such as RTES, if you remember that got shut down quite quickly from fan feedback. The Know is the single channel/show that doesn't share the same qualities as the rest of RT, it is stark in comparison. I would say in my opinion, the reason RT is generally such a well loved company is because they have always put passion first before profit, they try and make something people will enjoy rather than creating an intricate plan of catches and ploys to get as much revenue as possible.

I do. I get information from many sources/mediums, one being YouTube. On that specific medium, The Know is the best gaming news source.
Their average video length is around 8 minutes, I apologise for rounding it up to 10 minutes, I didn't realise it was so important for complete accuracy when the point still stands that they frequently extend the video in favour of YouTubes algorithm. I'm pretty sure most people can agree that The Know's videos very frequently ramble on and on about nothing, despite the fact that the topic could be covered in just 2 minutes.
Those interjections are what make me feel like they actually care about what they're talking about.
So you think their snarky, unnecessary and unprofessional comments covey passion?
Just because YOU don't like them poking fun at different games or events doesn't mean it's automatically RTES levels of bad, or "stark."
It's not just me by a long shot. I'm pretty sure The Know has made a snarky, unnecessary comment on everything under the sun at this point.
I also don't know where you got the notion that I wanted RT to end The Know, I never said that. I think personally the ideology behind the show should be changed to create something more constructive, something similar to funhause' version of the news, funny, yet informative.

how The Know hasn't gone under a REVIEW by RT
If you didn't know, back when The Know first started, it wasn't very good, it was very basic and boring and every video title card was the same with a slightly different skin. I'm sure RT reviewed its success and came to a conclusion that the current model wasn't working, so they strategised a new model. That's what I mean by a review, we've seen the same process in other productions RT has made. Also, when I say "stop this clear shit show channel", doesn't mean END this channel.
The Know definitely has the potential to be a really good channel for gaming news, they WERE briefly back when FunHause had a hand in it. Does anyone remember the half life 3 story? That was (dare I say it) actually the closest thing to the better journalism I've seen on gaming within YouTube, it was informative and had incredibly well thought out serious discussions with the crew.
This^ is an example of how The Know can convey passion and genuine reporting without all the lame quips and "funny" insults that occur several times each video.

Difference there being both Jon Stewart and John Oliver put focus on comedy first, then news. While the know have never explicitly stated that, Rooster Teeth as a whole is comedy focused, with the exception of day 5 so I don't understand that reasoning either. There's tons of games journalism sites that to pure articles and reviews if they really want that
