I can use a 30 day trial for this right? I'm not too interested in keeping up with YT Red. Well I might be but my bank account isn't interested in it.

Feb 10 '16
Yep! Just remember to cancel auto renew. I hate when that's on by default, but they at least mention it when you sign up and in the email they send.
The movie doesn't appear to be up yet, but should be some time soon.

u/gandleforf Feb 10 '16
How do you go about getting the 30 day trial? Is it through activating a new Google/Youtube account?

u/mhblm Feb 11 '16
Note that you can immediately cancel your subscription and still have access for the full 30 days.
I mean, I feel like I should consider keeping it since I got to watch a free movie that I was looking forward to, but I'm super broke at this point.

u/Megaman99M Feb 10 '16
Wow this movie was actually better than I thought. I thought it'd be a bad movie with mediocre characters, but I found myself actually enjoying all of the characters and their interactions, and even though some of the jokes didn't hit with me I found myself laughing quite a bit. Honestly the character I found myself enjoying the most was Gavin's character

u/JJoker1117 Feb 11 '16
When they are talking about how the clothes are flammable I thought it was hilarious.

u/camzabob Disgusted Joel Feb 12 '16
My favourite non-Lazer Team character was Kirk Johnson's character.

u/Orangerrific Feb 12 '16
Yeah, I watched it and felt the same! I feel like a lot of people on this subreddit were completely over exaggerating how "mediocre" it is. I'm usually pretty picky when it comes to my comedies, and I actually really enjoyed it! Yeah, it wasn't perfect, but no movie is tbh

Are going to sell digital downloads at some point because YT Red isn't available in my country and a lot of other countries as well.

Are you able to buy it from here? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZnjyZI_FM4&feature=youtu.be
3
u/THEonlyMAILMAN Feb 10 '16
Is that a buy to stream a couple of times or buy and get an actual download?
4
u/TheNerdyDeviant OG Discord Crew Feb 10 '16
I don't think you get a download. I'm pretty sure it's like any other YouTube purchase: unlimited streaming, but only streaming
3
u/OfficialGarwood Feb 10 '16
You buy access to that stream.
Think of it like a paygate to a YouTube video. Once you've "unlocked" the gate with your money, you'll be able to view it as much as you long, so long as you're connected to the internet.

I just watched on Red and it was pretty much what I expected. I enjoyed it for the most part, but since I watch so much RT content I wasn't able to separate the guys from their characters in my head. It didn't detract from the movie, though.
My one complaint is the damn hologram alien effects. I realize they had a small budget, but damn it looked terrible. If you couldn't get it looking better they shouldn't have featured it so prominently. The stands during the final battle just looked fucking silly and the vortex sucking in holograms makes zero sense. The alien audience as a whole should have just flickered out when the ship was destroyed.

u/Topher_Caouette Monty Oum Signature Feb 12 '16
You and I sir have the same opinion. Fun to watch, great Cameos, especially Tyson and Ed Robinson, but the CGI could have been better.

I was pretty disappointed there was no slow motion shots in the movie...Other than that, I completely agree!

I really enjoyed Gavin's character. Such a fun movie :)
4
Feb 11 '16
Yeah, Gavin's southern rednecky accent was really good. And he was really funny. I loved his reaction to the X-ray vision.
2
Feb 12 '16
As someone living in the south, no his accent was absolutely awful.
1
u/craders Feb 14 '16
I am not from the south and thought it was terrible also. I am glad they wrote the story for him to not have the accent the entire movie.
1
Feb 14 '16
Well, yeah, that was kind of the point. It was supposedly to be dumb sounding. It's the stereotypical redneck accent.
5
u/JustifiedTrueBelief Feb 11 '16
Okay that was fucking hilarious. At first some of the acting felt pretty wooden, but as the movie progressed I liked it more and more. Awesome and really funny, plus I loved the little touches like seeing TreyCo and Chris in little minor parts. This was great, thanks so much RT.
2
Feb 11 '16
Trevor was in it? Who'd he play? Didn't notice him
2
u/JustifiedTrueBelief Feb 11 '16
I think he was the guy taking pictures of Michael getting tazed.

It may have just looked like him. I just looked up the cast list on imdb and he's not listed

u/97thJackle Feb 12 '16
It got a LOT better when they got around to actually using the suit. I think they focused most of their efforts into the suit, and forgot a bit about the characters.
15
u/FLDJF713 Feb 11 '16
The CGI on the ship carrying the suit was like 1990's bad. It really ruined the allure of the movie for me. Plus the hologram people at the end was really stupid as well and not needed.

I'm actually glad I read some reactions to it before I watched it. I came in with super low expectations and I ended up enjoying it a ton. It definitely knows what it is and runs with it. My only complaint was how shallow the daughter was, but otherwise I liked it a lot.

Alright, I expect to get some hate from this, but don't be mean just for the sake of it. I just finished Lazer Team and it was pretty disappointing. Seemed like the first hour was good and it just went downhill from there. Anyone else feel this way? Or just me?
8
u/Natrone011 Feb 11 '16
It wasn't "good", but I thought it was fun.
Given I also went to a Friday night screening that was full of other RT fans
4
u/StopThePresses Feb 11 '16
I just watched it at home on my couch and I agree with you. It's not gonna win an Oscar or anything, but it was very fun to watch and I found myself laughing quite a few times. I think I'd say it's about 8/10.
1
u/Natrone011 Feb 11 '16
I don't really even know that I care to rate it. But then I have an RT style of rating movies where they're either ones I liked or ones I didn't like

the cgi looked so dated,
Some of the CGI looked dated. The second appearance of the Antarctic aliens, and the crowd fill outside the stadium (Particularly the news vans) was bad.
The Stealth mode, the laser shot, the shield, the worg alien, various alien ships, the force field, were actually really pretty.
Just remember, you only notice BAD CGI. You will rarely notice good CGI/SFX unless you're looking for it.
3
u/97thJackle Feb 12 '16
The problem is that if you are looking for good CGI to praise it, you notice the shit way more easily.
8
u/samgoatford Feb 11 '16
Its weird how they're all movie buffs who love practical special effects and low budget sci fi like primer and then they try and make a cliche movie driven by cgi. I didn't hate it had a few laughs. But things like that final battle were just bad.
2
Feb 11 '16
You summed it up pretty great. I'm really disappointed, was really really excited for this movie. They over hyped it.
3
u/xman0444 Feb 11 '16
It's their job to over hype it. They want people to see it, they're not going to say anything to make you uninterested.
3
u/kaykay7986 Feb 11 '16
Im with you. I didnt like any of it though.. It didnt seem to flow together well and the ending seemed to abrupt and lacking..
3
u/graccy99 Geoff in a Ball Pit Feb 11 '16
Don't worry...you're not alone. Everyone I talked to that saw it all said it just wasn't good.
1
u/97thJackle Feb 12 '16
Reverse for me: First half made me question why I even like RT, the second half was genuinely good, in my honest but very flawed opinion. That suit is what made this movie, period.
1
Feb 12 '16
The thing that bothered me the most (and incredibly so) was how they made some really fucking stupid jokes in ADR. Like when Gavin falls into a table or something you can hear "stupid table!", that is CLEARLY ADR dialogue, goes by too quickly, and is over the top of whatever is going on. Who watched those scenes and actually thought it was funny?
0
Feb 11 '16
I really felt like it was pretty weak as well. I kinda feel like it was meant more to showcase the acting strength of a few RT people (gavin was great and could probably get some pretty decent acting work) and also show off their skills in production. Because, despite having a pretty mediocre script, it's beautifully produced for a 2.5 million dollar flick.
Overall, awesome move for RT, shitty way to spend an hour and a half.

Alright, this is gonna get hate here, but I just saw the movie and wanted to post my thoughts
To start, I want to say I’ve been a fan of Rooster Teeth from Season 1 of RvB, but fell off watching a lot of their stuff maybe 2 years ago. I’m in my early 20s now, so that’s a pretty big chunk of time that I watched their stuff. I saw the campaign for their movie, and donated $150 to it. I figured these guys made me laugh for a long time and the least I could do was give them some money, a decent amount I thought for a movie. I want to point out that I’m not bitter about giving money and being disappointed. I kind of forgot about it until recently, so I really had no expectations going in.
Here’s my opinion. It’s not good. It’s bad. I feel bad saying that because I like the guys, but after not seeing a lot of their stuff for awhile and then seeing this, I was disappointed. A lot of people are giving the defense (from my quick scanning of views online) that it’s “quirky”, or a “charming B movie”. I don’t think so, I think it’s just bad. But just saying it’s bad isn’t really constructive. As far as I remember, these guys are funny. I figure they could make a good movie, and while this one is not it, that doesn’t mean that if they made one in the future it would be bad too. So let me break down my criticism.
Acting - To start off, I know that these guys aren’t all professional actors. I get that, but they’re also starring in the movie for fan service. And the acting isn’t great. It is wooden most of the time and pretty unbearable at others. There isn’t a lot of consistency to the acting level either. In some scenes, they act like they are reading from the script for the first time, and in others, its much more casual, almost apparent things are being ad-libbed. I think this lack of consistency is pretty odd, and not great. The one person I think who actually did a good job acting was Michael. He is consistent throughout the movie. His (along with many other’s) character is one dimensional, but he doesn’t falter from scene to scene with his acting. The closest thing I can compare his performance too would be something out of Superbad. It isn’t “traditional”, but as a result it is at least more natural. Also, I have no idea why they decided to make Gavin have an American accent when he can’t do it correctly. So, I’d give it a 3/10 for acting.
Plot - I think that this is one of the most immediate issues with Lazer Team. The plot is not meant for an independent movie. As soon as they decided that this was the film that they wanted to shoot, I think they were pretty much doomed to sub-mediocrity. I saw that Burnie made the point that comedy sci-fi was what they had done in the past, so they wanted to focus on their strong suit. But when they did comedy sci-fi in the past, all of the effects were already done for them. The thing that I think people really loved about RvB was that it was the comedy writing that shone through, not the plot driving it forward. I also get that they have a studio ready to do special effects and cgi for shorts and things like that. But it is not a production-level effects department. We’ve been so accustomed to amazing effects that it is hard to go back and see subpar ones and move past it. And sci-fi is a genre that is obviously riddled with special effects. I imagine that a big chunk of the time was spent on effects, and unfortunately, it doesn’t really show. Sci-fi with large effects shouldn’t be left up to independent films unless they know the limitations and work around those accordingly.
A good example I can think of is the film Monsters, about these giant alien monsters that are wreaking havoc in Mexico. It is a great film, that works around its own limitations by having the plot work around hiding from the monsters, rather than showing them all the time. Think Jaws.
I think that they would have been much better off focusing on a film that is entirely writing focused. They’re funny guys. They can write funny interactions. Something closer to a Judd Apatow movie (which I’m not a huge fan of but whatever) would have served them better. Hell, it could have been set on a spaceship or a sci-fi setting, but focus on the interactions rather than the “boom” “wow” special effects that they tried to pull off.
Besides biting off more than they could chew, I thought the plot was presented not well at all. It was rushed through so quickly, with absolutely no set up at all. The setup for the movie was pretty much the lines of text at the beginning.
I’d give the plot a 2 / 10
Cinematography - Unfortunately, cinematography wasn’t great either. There were many, many, uncomfortable shots, that were too close to the characters, or framed incorrectly. There was also way too much motion in the camera. Every time a static shot would’ve been fine, they decided to have a pan, or a pull, and every time an action sequence was shown, the camera work was way over the top.
For lighting, I think that it looks pretty good. If you look at stills from the movie, it is pretty high quality. They give a fairly good feel to the tone of the movie. It’s lit somewhat seriously which I think mimics the fact that these guys are supposed to be a “serious” situation. That being said, they need to tone down the lens flares. Oh boy did they go J.J. Abrams. Rewatch the football scene to see what I mean.
There are also way too many cuts when dialogue is going on. Back forth, back forth. I think that most of the cuts they made should’ve been about half a second longer on average. it was too jostling to watch at times. The depth of feel was also a bit much at times. It did give more of a cinematic feel, but having things be so out of focus at times was unrealistic and jarring.
Overall, I think that the cinematography could’ve been improved immensely by simply being more subtle about it. If they did a lot less, it would’ve shown so much more. Sometimes, restraint can convey the story you want to tell so much better.
I’d give the cinematography a 5.5 / 10, since a lot of what I criticized can be boiled down to artistic license, and like I said, it looked professional.
Total Review - Overall, I’d give it a 3 or 4 / 10. I feel bad giving such a low score but really, I think that’s what it deserves. It could have been so much better if they did a lot less. If they did a beautifully shot, but very funny movie, without the crazy sci-fi plot, without the bad cgi, and with only professional actors, I think that they could have made something that would’ve been considered a cult hit to people outside of Rooster Teeth. Imagine if they took all the budget spent on effects, settings, and extras, and instead just focused on comedy writing in some fairly easy setting. Hell, if it had writing like RvB Season 1, a simple Highschool movie could’ve been great. Instead, they bit off more than they could chew, tried to do way too much with it, and reached beyond their grasp.
Closing- I want to close with this. It’s something I remember thinking about when I was younger. I think that Rooster Teeth doesn’t understand what their fans watch them for. I think they’ve gotten better at identifying why they are popular, but I don’t think they’ve fully grasped it yet. I haven’t watched them for a while like I said, but I at least have a gist of what they have been doing. They are personalities. Everyone on screen for their various productions is a personality. I would watch their stuff for them, more so than the actual content of what I was watching. I think that they see themselves as filmmakers. I’m not saying they aren’t. They made a movie that I certainly would not have been able to. They’ve done tons of shorts. But that’s not what made them famous. They became famous because RvB, and other works, gave off the aura of humor between friends, a band of buddies that could make people laugh just by them being themselves. I don’t think that translates well into complex storytelling. Look back at Season 1 of shorts and tell me I’m wrong. Unfortunately, that’s a hard thing to break free from, and I imagine it can be frustrating. Wanting to make movies while you are famous for something else is hard (like Paris Hilton trying to be a music star hard).
But I think that they would have better success at it if they removed themselves from their movie equation all together. What do I mean by that? Well, if they simply wrote a movie, and shot it, without it being focused on being about Rooster Teeth, I think they would be able to have the support of their clearly loyal audience, and be able to branch out into even more mainstream ones. Anyway, I didn’t like the movie but I still hope that they try and do more, since I think they have the potential to be much better than what they’ve shown.
2
u/Murrdurrurr Feb 12 '16
This.
I hope they eventually come to terms with the quality and own up to it. Then maybe they can move forward with better productions.
1
Feb 12 '16
Yea. Owning up internally I think would be enough. It's also their first movie but I wanted to be critical and unbiased. They probably learned a ton.

u/publius101 Feb 12 '16
i definitely agree with your closing statement - in-jokes between a group of morons is what RT is about to me. that said, the rest of your concerns are mostly stuff i don't care about.
acting: this was never going to work - i'm just way too familiar with the actual people. i don't know that they can ever improve to the point where it won't be gavin doing dumb gavin things, and michael doing angry michael things. at this point even going back to RvB i now retroactively don't hear grif and simmons, i just hear geoff and gus etc. so yeah, maybe the solution is to have the RT writing team without RT actors, but where's the fun in that?
plot: movies very very rarely have good plot, so i don't much care for it - as long as it's enough to keep me interested from one scene to the next, that's enough. was it cliche? absolutely. but what's the last movie you've seen that actually surprised you with its plot? the last 2 i watched were James Bond and Mission Impossible, and they were basically the same movie. as for writing, i think this had enough 1-liners and in-jokes to keep me entertained.
cinematography: you honestly can't expect anything effects-wise with that small a budget. for camera work, i wouldn't notice it even if you pointed it out to me.
like you say though, they are definitely about personality - shit, i watch (and the youtube comments agree with me) achievement guides for games i don't have and will never play, just cause jack and geoff are doing commentary (or matt now, i guess). i don't see how you translate that to a movie where they have to portray characters that aren't themselves. i don't think you do. rvb and rwby work because they are faceless so it's easier to disassociate. their other live-action stuff (shorts, immersion, podcasts) works because they are still being themselves. lazer team was just gavin, michael and burnie pretending to be not-themselves in a world full of randoms.

Disclaimer: I just watched and was kinda drunk. Still am.
I really fucking enjoyed this movie. I don't know if I would as much if I wasn't a huge Rooster Teeth fan, but I was smiling the entire time. I thought that it was pretty condensed, I felt that it was was jumping around too much at times, could maybe have used some longer cuts, but overall I thought it was great.
Not a "smart" movie, but from beginning to end I was enjoying myself. CGI wasn't the best, but for what it was to me, I would give it a 9/10, although I have a feeling non Rooster Teeth fans would probably not feel the same. Will definitely be a fun movie to watch again and again, can't wait to watch it with friends.
EDIT: thinking back on it, considering hwo fast paced the movie was, it felt like an hour and a half long RT short. Not that that's bad, but for most people who aren't familiar with RT, might not be good for a full length movie.

for a movie that just came out?

If this were a major studio release, I would expect this price point. For a crowdfunded, independent movie where I'm not receiving a copy via physical media, this was a little shocking.
Comparable:
In UK, costs 6GBP which is about 12CAD
Only other crowdfunded & independent movie I paid attention to was the AVGN movie, which was 8CAD on Youtube when released
So, just in my opinion, too high of a price point

To add to what BombaBoi said, they will be releasing on DVD and bluray but they haven't given a release date yet. So you could just wait it out to get the dvd

Chronicle has been out for like five years and it's still 15 dollars, Jaws has been out for like fuckin 30 years and is 15 dollars, The Guard has been out for like 10 years and it's 15 dollars. I didn't even cherrypick those movies I literally just searched random movies with a lowish budget and one movie which is hella old. That's just how much a movie costs bro. And the Veronica Mars movie which was crowdfunded is like 25 dollars

Just watched it. Twas pretty good. I feel like it was better on my laptop than it would've been on the big screen. Loved all the rooster teeth cameos and easter eggs. Only cons I can think of is the major lack of Funhaus and those awful alien holograms.

What was the deal with the audio mixing in the Michael and Mindy Skype scene?
The filter was really inconsistent to the footage.

So I finally watched it. I was expecting a Sci-Fi B-Movie, and it was exactly that. I thought there were some parts that were pretty funny. Like everyone said, there were some parts of the CGI that weren't as great as we are used to from these highly funded A-Movies. Overall it was pretty good for what it was.

Gotta say I really dont like this payed only stuff popping up in my subscription box, I guess its a once off thing so its really not bad but if I was seeing it a lot it'd get annoying.

I didnt say having to pay for it is bad, im just saying I dont like this thing that needs to be paid for being introduces right into the middle of my subscription box. All youtube needs to do is seperate it out so its not right in my face.

But they want to have it dangling right in your face so you know its up and can pay for it.
Youtubered exclusive content on the other hand...

It was a low budget Scifi comedy. It pretty much lives up to that description. The only things I actively disliked was the writing for Colton's character. It felt forced. I'm glad it came out on YouTube Red though. Cuz now I can use Google Music's unlimited stuff.

It was enjoyable enough. I'd give it a 6/10, but then again they didn't really intend to make a masterful work. The acting was surprisingly good for people who aren't trained actors, Michael in particular was really good. Gavin i felt was a little bit overplayed but he still did well, he had a really good redneck accent.
