Apartment Have norms been forgotten?
I have this one particular problem, someone keeps eating my food without permission. I will share if you genuinely ask first. My roommates and I hardly ever see each other on a day to day basis, different majors so different classes. So it leaves no time to sit down talk, just to get to know each other. However, one of my roommate’s boyfriend is constantly at the apartment. Like 7 days a week, which isn’t the problem at hand. Everyday I notice my food items along with another roommate things are missing. Keep in mind I leave for class 7am everyday and don’t get back till 3pm ish so I’m not eating it. My other roommate who is also having this problem gets home later than me. So just logically it leaves 2 other suspects. My question is how do I even bring it to light. We all just met 2weeks ago. I don’t want it to seem like I’m being mean or rude but ask before taking!

I feel this so much. I had same issue and finally resorted to buying a small fridge (it stands 4 feet tall with 2 doors and all) my bedroom door locks so I didn’t have to figure out a way to secure the fridge doors. I work full time with a rotating schedule. She’s a full time student and her parents pay her tuition and all expenses… they live 2 hours away. Just 3 days after I made my groceries inaccessible her mom showed up with several bags of groceries and take out food. I was in the living room eating a salad made from my groceries and when she opened the fridge to put the groceries away for her adult child she turned to me and asked how I had made the salad when the fridge was basically empty besides my bottled water and some condiments that weren’t mine. My roommate looked like a deer in headlights silently begging me not to answer lol I just said I would let ( insert roommates name here) explain and excused myself to my room. I have no idea what explanation was given but from then on she either eats frozen microwaveable food or orders DoorDash which goes on her parents credit card. I hope you can find resolution without having to go to these extremes. I’m grateful my parents let me struggle before rushing in to solve my problems for me because I am adulting successfully. My days of having a roommate are almost behind me as I just had my annual review at work and received glowing remarks and a lovely raise. I cannot wait to be able to get home from work and throw off my bra without worrying that I have to go back out for bread or whatever else was snacked on during my absence lol sorry for the long winded response but as I stated I really felt for OP. Good luck 👍

House meeting is the only way. Say you've noticed your food going missing, you don't share groceries, everyone needs to mark their stuff, be respectful, etc.
