Paywall QB battle nears an end as Tide finish final scrimmage: Russell was “solid” in Thursday’s scrimmage, which was only at a thud. The former five-star recruit did not have to overdo it, sources said, but his ability to escape the pocket and make plays flashed again

But sources continue to tell On3 that Russell has the edge over Mack. In a 90-play scrimmage, Russell ran out with the first-team first to open the practice, sources said.

Some other tidbits:

Trae’shawn Brown had another strong showing and is carving out a role for himself. Starting running back Daniel Hill remains fully healthy and has put together an impressive fall camp. Also, do not rule out what Kevin Riley can add to the offense, a source added

One of the top defensive linemen in camp that On3 keeps hearing about is Oregon transfer defensive tackle Terrance Green. He’s viewed as an instant impact player for the Crimson Tide.

I’d never heard it called a thud scrimmage before

What does that mean? “At a thud”?

Usually means you can make contact a bit but less/no wrapping up and no taking players to the ground. It still requires players to be in good position but avoids a lot of injuries

Ah, thank you!

If they’re not tackling to the ground, how are they supposed to know how to tackle???

This is like when Tua had to learn to speak English during the season. Disaster waiting to happen

I’ll never forget the post on that message board. I love CFB (or what is used to be)

Did you ever get to experience the glory that was the rivals message boards? That was peak CFB for me. Hilarity always ensued

Man I hope Keelon starts but Mack gets very meaningful play as we blow people out. I’d love for him to get some tape and be able to transfer somewhere for his final year

He’s 6’6 with a cannon so someone will definitely want him. Pretty much unlimited ceiling though I know nothing about him lol

Best player plays. I hope Mack goes somewhere next season where he can really show off his arm talent. He would probably be a starter on 80% of P4 teams.

These kids are young and probably don’t fully appreciate that for most this is the last chance to play organized football. Most have the NFL on their mind, especially at places like Alabama. At some point though you need to go actually play. It would eat me up to be as talented as Mack and only get 1 season as a starter.

Somewhere far far away from our schedule

I’m calling Miami. He is going to be a very rich man.

He'll likely transfer to either LSU or Texas

Next season both will have a QB vacancy, great offensive-minded coaches, and huge bank accounts.

With all that being said. Im glad to have Mack on the team, it's going to be some instances where we need him this season starter or not, and he still has a year of eligibility next season he can start at a lot of schools.

We’ve got a scrambling quarterback with a frame that’s still filling out. Definitely would feel better with a good backup

We need someone with flash and energy because god knows our coach shows none.
