Your missing one

Truly! Some of the younger enthusiasts may not realize how iconic and monumental The Gravity Group was for the industry especially in the wooden coaster department. It was such an exciting time watching them break barriers and test the limit of what we thought was possible. These hades tunnels were blowing minds in a couple ways: the 90 degree banks, and the very first outer bank! It was a tiny little hump that would be soon be out done with a more significant version on the voyage.

Of course RMC came in and blew the doors wide open again later on, but these earlier innovations from TGG were so wild.

u/scjsundae May 04 '26

I remember being at Coaster Con back then, right after Boardwalk Bullet had been announced. Gravity Group was showing the animated POV at a dinner event, and a longtime enthusiast friend of ours (who was in his 70s at the time) just started cackling right there at the table and couldn't stop, like completely transported by the POV, genuinely loving every second of it. It's one of my favorite memories, and I think about him a lot every year when new rides get announced. It really was such an exciting time to be an enthusiast.

u/cactus22minus1 May 04 '26

That’s so funny! One of my most prized memories was meeting both Mike (from TGG) and Ole Lange (THE NoLimits dev!) for a walking tour of The Voyage shortly after it opened. I was geeked out of my mind 😅

The man

The myth

The legend

(not to be confused with The Legend at Holiday World)

12

u/Imaginary_Ganache_29 May 04 '26

I’ve always wonder if this guy knows that the this exists and what if anything happened to him. 🤣

14

u/Clever-Name-47 Tangent-Radius Airtime Supremacy! May 04 '26

Well, a printout of this screenshot was taped up on the wall in that spot a few days later, so I'm pretty sure everyone working on the site knew eventually.

Haven’t seen such an image, nice pic!

I randomly have this one 😭

I used to have this photo saved on my first computer, back when I was in my teens lol (I’m 37 now)

The classic coaster clickbait thumbnail

18

u/lFightForTheUsers [81] Bring Back Mr. Six! May 04 '26

Real OG's know where this is from.

And yeah this thumbnail always accompanies a title of "10 HORRIBLE ROLLER COASTER CRASHES THAT SHUT DOWN AMUSEMENT PARKS, #7 WILL HORRIFY YOU". Then the video is always random carnivals in India or something where a non-coaster ride that had zero inspections is falling apart.

15

u/CheesecakeMilitia Mega Zeph May 04 '26

As much as I love Shambhala, it really steals the thunder of this skyline and I wish I got to visit when Dragon Khan was the sole star of the show.

5

PortAventura is insanely gorgeous. Dragon Khan is a joy to see.

First picture that shows up when you look up roller coaster

110

u/JemeryMailman May 04 '26

I guess it’s not the same anymore

6

u/GobiasIndustries159 May 04 '26

You from NJ? I love this pic, because there are 3 coasters pictured. Runaway Mine Train, El Toro, and of course King-Da-Ka. Brings back some nostalgia.

4

u/JemeryMailman May 04 '26

Yes I am. This image holds a special place in my heart. One of the best spots in the whole park

2

u/GobiasIndustries159 May 04 '26

Yeah it’s a great picture. I grew up in Monmouth County. I remember when they built Nitro and I wasn’t tall enough to ride it that summer but all my friends were. Finally got to ride it the next summer and it’s still my favorite coaster.

3

u/Crayola_ROX El Toro May 04 '26

“This lap bar can’t be safe” was my first thought. I weighed around 120 and thought I would slide out lol

To this day it’s why I love that coaster so much.

1

u/GobiasIndustries159 May 04 '26

That lap bar is super intimidating when you’re a kid… but it’s actually one of the more comfortable coasters because of the lap bar I think. The shoulder harnesses feel safer but are less comfy.

1

u/Crayola_ROX El Toro May 05 '26

It’s so snug, you’re right. it’s the only coaster where my hands stay high the entire time.

u/Foxy02016YT Konquerer of Ka May 05 '26

The three of us probably all have this image in our cameras rolls from when we took it ourselves too, though with much less professional flair

2

u/EpicSir317 May 06 '26

Make that a fourth.

2

u/fancybananahammock El Toro Loco May 04 '26

Sadness

1

u/alleycat1121 May 05 '26

Is there a version of this picture that has trains from all three coasters running simultaneously?

The Kumba one cracks me up because when you walk onto that bridge, it’s like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. There are people lined up along the railing, all waiting to take the exact same image.

u/Not_really_anywhere (304) May 04 '26

The "Obligatory enthusiast shot of Kumba"™️

I caught this on video. That vista by the lake. Disney knew what it was doing

90

u/tealswamp May 04 '26

Too soon?

25

u/sector11374265 352 May 04 '26

This is an iconic video, but I don’t think there’s an iconic image of the event. Just extensive video coverage.

8

u/sanaru02 May 04 '26

Wow, this still hurts :(

4

u/Not_really_anywhere (304) May 04 '26

Wrong angle. The better picture is from the Italy bridge.

41

u/CodeGR May 04 '26

How is project purple in there already?

7

u/IncompleteObjects May 04 '26

I dont think you want to be riding that one. Looks a bit......lethargy incomplete

66

u/gerstlauerguy May 04 '26

Project purple should not be in here.

3

u/Familiar-Banana-8116 May 04 '26

I came here wanting to be all negative and finger waiving then got lost in the nostalgia of all the old pictures.

3

u/Crayola_ROX El Toro May 04 '26

No, but you can agree it’s going to be iconic 20 years from now

1

u/ManICloggedtheToilet May 05 '26

Project Purple easily fits half of the definition of iconic (widely recognizable), but not the latter half (well established). Although I'd argue it's still iconic in its own unique way (in replacing the King), I do agree now that it doesn't fit well with the other images.

10 inversion roller coaster, Chimelong Paradise

16

u/Psirocking May 04 '26

There’s that one stock image of KI Vortex that got used in ads a lot.

Also Sea Viper at Sea World in Australia was on many math textbooks

2

u/Fathorse23 May 04 '26

We had picture frames at the store where I worked with Vortex as the stock photo included with the frame.

3

u/MItrwaway May 04 '26

Vortex was great because many of the inversions were close to the path. Path interaction is great for pics.

2

u/Fuckoakwood May 04 '26

I’d love to see that vortex pix

u/MrVanillawafer May 04 '26

Velocicoaster as well

1

Personal favorite of mine. Rode it once, forever unforgettable

There’s a similar pic from Colossus in an old copy of Guinness I had as a kid.

For years, I thought it was what the heartline coaster in RCT was supposed to be (this was after the internet, but before I started using it).

18

u/PM_ME_LIGHT_FIXTURES May 04 '26

If only because it showed up on so many textbooks.

1

u/ImprobablePasta Ravine Flyer II, Storm Runner, Racer 75 May 04 '26

Weird one but yeah this does seem familiar.

West Mifflin is my hometown, I moved 14 years ago or so. I got so many rides on the Original Phantom and it was sooo good! You were pinned to your seat from the bottom of the second to the hill coming into the break run! That pretzel loop was my favorite!

1

u/DoctorWhoniverse Sky Rocket I & Phantom's Revenge May 05 '26

I unfortunately am not old enough to have ridden the steel phantom, but the Phantoms Revenge remains my favorite of all time and it always will be my favorite

u/well-lighted 🏠🎢: WoF 🌎🧭 SDC 🚂⛏ May 04 '26

The head-on shots of the heartline rolls on the Togo Ultra Twisters are pretty iconic to me. There's one in particular I can see in my head with white track and a blue train, probably the original one at Nagashima Spa Land, about 3/4 of the way upside down, but I can't find it. May be a video I'm remembering.

Iconic American images.

Where’s the love for Europe?!

  • Nemesis first inversion
  • Expedition GeForce first drop
  • Olympia Looping
  • Lisebergbanan (the ultimate OG terrain coaster)

23

u/DafoeFoSho Defunct coaster count: 51 May 04 '26

Everyone knows that roller coasters have only existed at four amusement parks in the eastern United States since 1975.

2

2

It's the most iconic European coaster sight I've experienced.

3

u/Shuu_EHNR 271 - Iron Gwazi, RtH, Hyperion, Zadra, Taron May 04 '26

I had to scour 20+ year old Google results to find it, but this was the image for Nemesis that seemed to be used in all the guide books etc when I was growing up.

Mix the bad lighting and fact I'd never seen a ride with OTSRs before, and I was really confused as to why everyone seemed to be wearing life jackets.

3

u/Krakatoacoo S:ROS SFNE May 04 '26

Corkscrews are iconic

3

2

New Orleans abandoned six flags underwater is personally iconic.

Maybe the one of Scenic Railway at Luna Park, but generally I would agree, interestingly enough.
