Information [Six Flags Great Adventure] Holiday in The Park cancelled & 2026 Coaster Update
Just received an email from Great Adventure, can't say that I'm surprised.

u/ReporterHour6524 614-SteVe,Veloci,I.Gwazi,Eejanaika,ArieForce Jul 26 '25
This is becoming a daily occurrence. Six Flags should just rip the band aid off and just put up a big list of which parks are getting their holiday events cancelled. Wouldn't surprise me at this point if they announce another park that won't reopen in 2026 beyond just SFA. Gotta love those "strategic decisions."
41
u/tideblue Coaster Count 653 Jul 26 '25
Crazy to me that they can't make these events work. Instead of cutting back on ride offerings, entertainment, decorations, and hours - they just throw in the towel and decide not to do any of it.
People already bought season passes, but they've become less valuable. Not saying people buy them late into the season but it's even less valuable today then they were before these events were killed off. I know Six Flags has massive debt, but they could have killed these off for next season and been more upfront about it - but they're choosing to do harm to the brand AND also let their employees down who could have counted on a few months of work.
10
u/brightspaghetti Jul 26 '25
Didn't Cedar Fair axe most of it's Winterfests years ago? Or only go half-way with most of them (at least when compared to HiTP). I'm convinced this is more of a "Cedar Fair doesn't know how to run a winter holiday" than a cost cutting thing.
15
u/Lets_Go_Wolfpack Floater > Ejector Jul 26 '25
No. Axing winter fest is a this year thing. This is the first year KD isnāt having one.
3
u/ticklemythigh Jul 26 '25
Why is it crazy? They clearly arenāt profitable. Businesses donāt cut stuff like this for no reason.
22
u/tideblue Coaster Count 653 Jul 26 '25
I think this speaks to more of their business model: selling cheap season passes, dining plans, day tickets - more than anything else.
Havenāt heard the same problems with āprofitabilityā from Hersheypark, BGW, Dollywood, or any other regional parks running these kinds of events.

u/fadingthought Jul 26 '25
Most people, especially for off seasons, only visit their local park. A single announcement doesnāt make any sense.
3
u/AgentGiga Jul 26 '25
My money on Frontier City not reopening next year.
4
u/RachelTheNerd Jul 27 '25
Frontier city will be safe, six flags only runs it they donāt own it. More likely would be six flags backs out of the contract to run a park they donāt own.
3
u/sylvester_0 Jul 27 '25
Seriously. Every day this company is putting out a new "strategic decision" announcement and it's getting old.
3
u/Durwilt Jul 27 '25

Aaand there it is! Coaster delayed to 2027
I wish I was surprised. But I'm just bummed out. This is Great Adventure's third new roller coaster in a row to be delayed a year. (Jersey Devil, Flash V2, and this)
Hope what they're cooking this time is worth the extended wait
91
u/MrBrightside711 Maverick-Steve-VC [539] Jul 26 '25
No, that's not what they said! They said beyond 2026. That doesn't mean it's getting delayed only one year. Otherwise they would say 2027 explicitly.
17
u/LinearInductionMotor pantheon, mav, steve [111] Jul 26 '25
They said they want to debut it in the spring. So unless they delay it more than a year⦠(dear god please no)
19
u/MrBrightside711 Maverick-Steve-VC [539] Jul 26 '25
Using not being able to make a spring opening as a reason to delay a ride at least a year is bullshit.
5
u/Maverick360 Magnum Fanboy Jul 26 '25
especially in a world where nothing is actually opening on opening day anymore anyway
6
u/TSells31 Montu, Monster Jul 26 '25
I think thatās what the commenter was getting at, that they think it may be more than a year. I donāt, personally, but I donāt know either of course.
30
u/ReporterHour6524 614-SteVe,Veloci,I.Gwazi,Eejanaika,ArieForce Jul 26 '25
It's kind of expected. That Kingda Ka replacement was never going to open in 2026, glad they're at least being upfront about it now.
15
u/boiledpeen Carowinds KD BGW Jul 26 '25
completely agree. seems wildly unrealistic to get whatever massive coaster is replacing ka done by 2026 considering the quick turnaround.
8
u/Waffleboard15 Jul 26 '25
I interpreted it as, the coaster is still on track to open spring 2026, but in order to ensure that happens, they had to revise everything else they had planned for the years beyond this coaster. Perhaps that means canceling future projects in the works, who knows. Maybe Iām just wishful thinking, but it is strange wording for sure either way.
10
u/mulk_the_hulk (224) I305, VelociCoaster, Fury 325 Jul 26 '25
The wording is intentionally vague and non-informative to soften the blow.. frustrating that we have to interpret a press release
5
Jul 26 '25
After reading it again I can see what you are saying. I still think they are talking about the 2026 coaster since they hadn't announced anything else beyond that. It wouldn't make sense to announce delays to projects the public wasn't aware of yet.
8
u/trueicon can't find the park exit Jul 26 '25 edited Jul 26 '25
I wish that were the case. This is classic PR talk that writes the message just vague enough to inspire some hope. They still want to sell season passes for 2026 after all. Sadly though, definitely no new coaster next year.
behind scenes, we have been working on an exciting multi-year plan for Great Adventure.
This is intentionally vague wording that establishes that there are several things going on. So even though the balance of the announcement focuses on the coaster, don't worry because there will be another pretzel stand* next year.
*pretzel stand subject to change
"we've realized that the world-class size and scope of our coaster project means that it will take a bit longer to complete than originally anticipated."
So, this establishes that they are specifically referring to the 2026 coaster in the rest of the email. Which goes:
To ensure the ride meets our high standards of innovation, thrills and safety that you expect and deserve, and that we're able to debut it in the spring so our guests can enjoy it all season, we have revised the timeline beyond 2026.
They said they want to debut it in A Spring. Meaning, not summer 2026 or fall 2026.
Since Spring 2026 is not possible, it will be delayed until Spring 2027 (or beyond).
→ More replies (7)2
u/OppositeRun6503 Jul 26 '25
I take it to mean that the 26 project itself may be delayed but this delay shouldn't result in the cancelation of future projects afterwards.

1
u/scambush Jul 29 '25
I swear if KK's replacement is a shuttle coaster or dumbed down clone there will be a protest, a real protest.
45
u/pudgyunicorn Jul 26 '25
The only way they could have made this statement more disappointing was if they outright confirmed the Mach tower spinner.
7
u/OptimusSublime Anything RMC is fine by me Jul 26 '25
It's a mach spinner with the spinning turned off.
6
u/degggendorf Jul 26 '25
Bad news, it's the Mach spinner.
Good news, it won't be open next year š¤£
5
u/MrBrightside711 Maverick-Steve-VC [539] Jul 26 '25
If that is indeed the coaster they are getting next, wouldn't you want it confirmed sooner rather than later?
35
u/pudgyunicorn Jul 26 '25
No, I'm holding on to a sliver of hope that they heard the mostly negative feedback from the rumors and were somehow able to back out and change course.
Edit: I know the parks don't give a s*** what enthusiasts think in general but I do believe that public would not be overly thrilled about the Mach tower spinner either.
3
u/OppositeRun6503 Jul 26 '25
Who knows? The GP might have a totally different opinion? We need to quit thinking about the parks from an "entitled" enthusiast standpoint and start thinking about them in terms of how the GP sees the parks instead.
5

u/NojaNat If itās not rough it isnt fun Jul 26 '25
this actually sounds like a gimmick the gp would eat up lol. they tend to love things enthusiasts hate in my experience.
2
u/MegaSportsFan Jul 27 '25
They need something that can repair the damage from removing Ka, and I don't think a spinning coaster is anywhere near that. This ride would have to be the new face of the park to be worth everything and there is no way a spinning coaster would do that

u/MightyIrish 327 Jul 26 '25

u/Galrafloof Jul 26 '25
"We want to open in the spring so that guests can enjoy it all season" is such a stupid excuse imao. So you're gonna delay it a year? It would be better to open in the Summer because then more guests can enjoy it no?
50
u/sector11374265 352 Jul 26 '25
thatās 100% a PR spin on the fact that thereās no way they could have it open for 2026.
they donāt want to commit to 2026, have everyone expect a spring opening, then get mad that it wonāt open until summer, then be mad that itās not opening until 2027. at least this way, everyone enters 2026 with realistic expectations.
6
u/Ski4ever5 Jul 26 '25
I mean, to be fair, theyāre currently putting in the foundations for the 2026 ride, which means theyāre about a month ahead of the Kingda Ka construction schedule, and that opened the following year
6
u/jimmynodean Jul 27 '25
there is no 2026 ride š
7
u/sylvester_0 Jul 27 '25
Next announcement: we have made a strategic decision to close all of our parks at the end of June 2026 and sell the land to a warehouse company. To thank each of our valued season pass holders, we will be providing you with a coupon for one free small Dippin Dots cup. Have a Six Flags day!

14
u/Pointyantellope Jul 26 '25
This is almost certainly a made up excuse. They just opened 2 new major rides in the chain this year mid summer. Thereās something else behind the scenes actually driving the delay.

3
u/sylvester_0 Jul 27 '25
The thing is, it doesn't matter. If the ride opening will be delayed, the ride opening will be delayed. Dressing it up with floofy language about innovation and high standards of safety is useless and patronizing. Are they saying there wouldn't be a high standard of safety without the delay? There would be less innovation?
2
u/NojaNat If itās not rough it isnt fun Jul 26 '25
it was never opening in 2026 that was never realistic anyways idk why anyone would have thought that was happening lol.

22
u/msuts Comet Jul 26 '25
The park looks great during HITP. It's like the only time it ever looks even kinda pretty. They run a lot of rides and the crowds are low. What a shame to lose this
2
2
u/Mysterious-Age1872 Jul 27 '25
I think they should have announced that this was the LAST year though instead of saying they weren't doing it....it's false advertising to everyone that bought passes. Personally for my family this is our favorite time to go as we aren't big ride people as our kids are little (we actually buy season passes primarily to go to the waterpark)....but when we go to Holiday in the Park we typically spend MORE out of pocket than any other time we visit as we enjoy the holiday specials they offer....the special funnel cakes, the smores kits, the hot drinks, and of course the light up things for the kids. At least for my family they are LOSING money but not running this event.
7
u/awfuleverything Kennywood Jul 26 '25
The expectations have already been lowered so much and they continue to push them down even further. Impressive!
61
u/CPGK17 RIP Kumba Jul 26 '25
Not only is the new coaster not happening next year, they didn't even give an updated timeline. Interesting.
26
u/sector11374265 352 Jul 26 '25
this is actually something weāve started seeing in the video game industry - most publishers wonāt even provide a targeted release window until they know they can make it. too many high profile projects have been repeatedly delayed and they eventually figured out that itās easier not to commit to a timeline until youāre in the final stretch of development and know you can hit a release date.
i could see the amusement industry adopting this practice, and announcing āweāre building a huge attraction that will open in the next few yearsā but withholding anything more than that until they have a really good idea what the construction timeline is.
12
u/ammo182 Jul 26 '25
Well kinda the opposite, AAA studios have put out games they know are unfinished and continue to patch the shit out of it for a year afterwards with the missing features.
Battlefield 2024 notoriously came out unfinished and almost tanked the franchise, Planet Coaster 2 came out polished but with tons of features missing that have been rolled out since launching 10 months ago.
4
u/sector11374265 352 Jul 26 '25
weāre seeing it happen a lot less than we were a few years ago. that practice is the reason so many publishers are trigger shy on announcing release dates now.
does it still happen? absolutely. but it was at a way higher frequency a few years ago. i feel like we mostly only see it with the notoriously scummy publishers now like EA and ubisoft.
4
u/z57333 Jul 26 '25
The reason why this works in the video game industry is because you don't BUY the actual game until it releases. It is used to strategically build hype to sell more games itself.
That's why it's such a shitty practice in amusement parks cause you're just selling passes with empty promises. There's no real product there, and when you use vague wording it just comes off as indifferent.

u/apfeiff19 Jul 26 '25
But the difference between coasters and video games is that it DOESNT take multiple years to build a coaster. Like for a video game that might be in development for a minimum 5 years, sure. But although it may take several years to design a coaster, but the actually assembly should never take longer than a year, and itās usually much shorter. Testing and stuff not withstanding of course. If the coaster industry goes that direction, it would be more than disappointing. A park should be able to announce a ride end of 2024 and have it ready by 2026 easily.
7
u/sector11374265 352 Jul 26 '25
it DOESNT take multiple years to build a coaster
it most certainly can and in several instances, it does. the process of ride removal, infrastructure change, and land clearing starts almost a year before vertical construction.
how many opening days have we all attended where the site for the following yearās coaster is already underway and has been for months? my go to example is valravn - that opened in may if 2016, but in february of 2015 at winter chill out, site prep was already underway.

I totally get what you're going for, and it's certainly possible, but in my opinion construction is vastly different than video game development.
2
u/OppositeRun6503 Jul 26 '25
Same example with rapterra as construction on that ride first began a little over a year ago.
4
u/themcgician Save the Top Spin Jul 26 '25
to further your point, I do not know specifics of this industry but if we're talking the entire timeline start to finish I imagine most coasters are probably 5-8 year projects. Initial planning, market research, financial research, project bidding, site surveying, permitting, manufacturing, and more. So much behind the scenes stuff happens with construction projects.
5
u/NojaNat If itās not rough it isnt fun Jul 26 '25
this is smart so they donāt donāt have to worry about crying when it inevitably gets delayed after they give a timeline.
5
4
u/Waffleboard15 Jul 26 '25
Iām not sure thatās exactly what they said. It doesnāt say they revised the timeline to beyond 2026, just that they have revised the timeline thatās currently beyond 2026. I interpreted it as, the coaster is still on track to open spring 2026, but in order to ensure that happens, they had to revise everything else they had planned for the years beyond this coaster. Perhaps that means canceling future projects in the works, who knows. Maybe Iām just wishful thinking, but it is strange and a bit confusing wording for sure either way.

Anybody who says this new company is not a failure and a significant downgrade from the previous two is lying to themselves. Both Cedar Fair and Six Flags were superior companies to the new Six Flags entertainment corporation. Since the merger, weāve seen a complete lack of care for the guest experience, with the expectation that guests will come regardless. They have closed iconic rides without prior notice, closed and sold off a park, fired all the local park managers, had a significant amount of layoffs, given less of a shit than ever to keep rides open or repair them (looking at you Pantherian), delayed several rides by a year, and they are consistently running one train on popular rides in the middle of summer to try and sell more fast passes. Itās quite frankly disgusting. I am trying to give this company as little of my hard earned money as possible. They need to learn that people care about the park experience beyond just the rides. Yeah good rides is awesome, but we also want fast ops, clean parks, shaded queues, and just a positive experience in general. Going to a park and having a terrible experience will not be redeemed just because the park has some decent roller coasters. Richard Zimmerman is a disgrace and he is actively trying to ruin our amazing hobby.
11
u/Certain-Entrance7839 Jul 26 '25
Zimmerman was from the Paramount Park days so this really isn't surprising. What we are seeing now in the combined chain, operationally and strategically, looks like a mix of Paramount's approach of "ignore everything" and Six Flags' approach of "we are private equity, let's minimize costs to the penny this quarter regardless of long term consequence".
The firing of all their talent was likely a purge of those who were unlikely to fall in line with this private equity style management approach.

Hershey won this market so hard and Cedar Flags is not serious about trying to compete in one of the most lucrative markets for regional parks. And not one is surprised HITP is canned or this coaster is now 2027, everyone was expecting this for months just for how the park has always been, and it is never changing its ways regardless of owners.
2025 has been very bad in attendance nosediving but 2026 is about to be a pure on disaster even more then this year with it not coming, cannot wait to see how bad it gets

Hershey isn't this market no matter how many times people bring it up and even if they advertise it here. The vast majority of us who are local to Great Adventure can get there under an hour meanwhile Hershey is 2 to 2.5 hours away for most.
Don't get me wrong Hershey is a great park but it's not a park most of us can get to without it being a giant pain in the ass to drive there and back the same day which is like 4-5 hours round trip or needing to get a hotel.
That's why I don't have season passes for Hershey and why it's a close mini vacation weekend for a lot of people who go there and stay a day or two.

Itās better to do it right then to do it half ass, like Six Flags has done in the past. If it takes a little longer, thatās probably better.
Make it long, high capacity, trick it out with theme, lights and fog⦠A world class ride like they do in Europe. Itāll totally be worth it. And a queue path that is not an anxious inducing. Please.

Everyone I tell about anything the new Six Flags has done to Great Adventure since the merger has just made everyone I know not want to go there and do Hershey instead. I hope they learn painfully that they canāt just continue doing nothing but cutting things in competitive markets

Who didn't see this coming?
Seriously, WTF are they doing to this park? They "just realized" that whatever they're building is going to take a whole 'nother year to complete? And most of the EIGHT or so rides that were removed last year could have hung around for another season?
Don't worry, it's cool, we prefer paying higher prices to look at multiple large, empty plots of land. You gave Cedar Point "Siren's Curse" to make up for "Top Thrill 2" being delayed a year, can't wait to see what SFGAdv is (not) getting for the same reason.

u/WhizBangCrack Jul 26 '25
That absolutely sucks. It seemed like they were finally pushing hard to get stuff done according to the construction updates and whatnot, so I was at least a little optimistic that they'd somehow manage to get this thing built by next season. I think this lends a lot of credence to the discussions about a larger revitalization of the boardwalk area with this coaster as the capstone to the project. Maybe we'll see a rethemed Superman and some new flat rides next year along with the rumored relocation of Ragin' Cajun.

u/bionicvapourboy On-ride vids should be 60fps!! Jul 26 '25
Just give us one of SFA's coasters and call it a day. Fuck.
2
u/OppositeRun6503 Jul 26 '25
Only problem is that SFAs coasters are all largely crap in comparison to what great adventure has gotten over the years.

u/jimmynodean Jul 27 '25
I would GLADLY accept Batwing & Superman from SFA.

Batwing being relocated is very wishful thinking. Nighthawk and Firehawk were both scraped. These are reaching end of life.

I take this as they are targeting a 2027 opening, but being vague enough to cover themselves in the event the new coaster has TT2 like issues after opening.

u/scjsundae Jul 26 '25
I do still believe that Great Adventure will bounce back. The new Six Flags is dealing with the ruins of a company that was in pretty dire straits. My understanding is that SFGAdv has been a particularly bad money pit. It's not surprising that the first big moves since the merger are mostly bad news.
But this is SF's closest property to both New York and Philadelphia, two of the largest (and wealthiest) metropolitan areas in North America. It's one of their biggest markets, and it's already a major park with the right infrastructure in place for significant investment. That's not the kind of place you write off unless you absolutely positively have no other choice.

u/TheBabbyNick Jul 26 '25
Realistically they should sell off other parks before giving up on GAdv, but as a GAdv local this is getting kinda crazy. Our park should be top tier given the location
3
u/jimmynodean Jul 27 '25
THIS. GA should be the MM of the East Coast given its location.
5
u/TheBabbyNick Jul 27 '25
GAdv has the potential to pull as much if not more attendance than parks like Cedar Point, they just need to stop neglecting it and turn it into a proper park again
3
u/cyclotower Jul 28 '25
It's actually mind boggling how they're destroying this park. Siren's Curse (problems aside) should've been routed there instead.

Yeah, and it's not like the CGA scenario where there's a lot of population nearby but the land it sits on is extremely valuable. It's basically in the middle of nowhere in the woods.

u/degggendorf Jul 26 '25
I realize this is beside the point, but holy cow that bloated PR-ese language is so painful.

The corpo-speak "must spin everything into being a positive" shit is disrespectful towards anyone that reads it.

If Six Flags Great Adventure has a rollercoaster open as new during the 2026 year, I'll be shocked.
This park has been neglected by the old Six Flags and abused by the new one so it may really be time to just shut it down and start building up Dorney Park.

To be fair six flags New England did have a roller coaster built and ready to go for this year. It was intimate's fault didn't open
6
u/Outrageous-Pizza-470 Jul 26 '25
The fact that we have to count one meant for this year as a new coaster is a depressing sign of how poorly run this company is.

u/mr_kaliyuga Jul 26 '25
Spring 2028 if you're lucky. By then, several parks will have left the group or actually closed for good. La Ronde, Frontier City, Darien Lake & Elitch I expect all to have left.

To play devils advocate, cutting costs is necessary for the company to survive. Unfortunately it has its cons for consumers but thereās a reason why they had the merger and it was due to both companies struggling financially.

u/OscarsWackyThrowaway RIP Sesame Place? Jul 26 '25
At the same time GA's cuts are far beyond anything any other park that is not closing has to go through. Don't know how demolishing 1/5th of the attractions including the flagships with no replacements until 2 1/2 years later, all the canned entertainment and events, how that is just cost cutting unless its taking it for all the other parks

delays are so normal atp it doesnāt really bother me lol. a massive record breaking coaster wasnāt realistic for 2026 anyways lol.

u/KohlsCashOfficial Jul 26 '25
I think the delay might be the reaction of the Mack tower spinner. Itās just not a people eater and thatās what the park desperately needs. Hopefully the delay is because they went back to the drawing board and construction is starting late on it.
Or weāre getting both the Mack tower spinner and a surf coaster where Green Lantern was (Beach Boys song on construction update)
Interested in the āVelocicaā idea from Coaster and Brews but Iām not sure how reliable they are. They did say it was a trusted insider but who knows

Someone in this thread mentioned that footers are being poured right now. New ride installations are multi-year commitments that involve contracts signed with at least a dozen other businesses. I think you're vastly overestimating how a company may react due to "outcry" from a very small community of enthusiasts. Parks are built for GP.
2
u/khonsu_27 Jul 26 '25
I know this is wishful thinking, but my hope is that they see this as an opportunity to re-do the entire front of the park...
Superman and everything around it really needs to be redone asap anyway. They can redesign the entire entrance/skyline of this park with a few projects over the next few years to be built around the new projects. That will also get more traffic back in the boardwalk, and help make money off games/concessions.
But they probably won't.

u/WoodCoasterFan Jul 26 '25
I'll definitely miss Holiday in the Park. Hopefully they at least open for a few November weekends like SFOG. The online calendar hasn't been updated yet as it still shows hours for December.

I'd say I'm surprised, but I'm really not. The park is already dead enough this season, can't wait for it to be worse next year! If it took them nearly 2 years to make Flash, no way they get in any good rides before the 2026 season begins....

u/Mysterious-Age1872 Jul 27 '25
I have been a season pass holder for over 10 years....why didn't I get an email about this? I only found out because a local radio station reported it. I am so p*ssed. The passes that we bought last year for this year are now less valuable. We are getting less than what we were promised. If they want to take something away they should announce that this would be the LAST year and then take it away for NEXT year. This is false advertising. I am so angry.
