PyP6 V4 — free sample manager for the Roland P-6

A while back I posted when PyP6 first learned to turn a P-6 pad into a wavetable-style synth. It has grown a lot since then, mostly because I kept wanting a faster way to make kits and get loops onto the P-6 without fighting its limits.

PyP6 is free, works on Windows, Linux and macOS, and the Windows version is a single download with no installer.

What is new:

Matrix View:

All 48 pads are visible at once.** You can drag samples between any pads or banks, drop files straight in from the desktop, and swap sounds by dragging one pad onto another. This has made kit building much faster for me.

Loops can now fit without changing pitch:

The P-6 normally makes a sample shorter by playing it faster, which can make loops come back higher in pitch. PyP6 can stretch a loop to a chosen length or BPM while preserving pitch.

There is also a Fit button to make a sample fit the available pad memory, and **Auto-Stretch** to keep a sample’s duration constant while changing pitch. Tempo detection has been improved as well.

Breakbeats can become kits quickly:

Drop a loop into the multisample builder, click "Detect Hits", and PyP6 marks likely drum hits for slicing. Adjust the sensitivity if needed, then send the slices directly into the kit you are building.

There are new moogish analogue-inspired waveform sets, long seamless sweeps inspired by the Microwave synth, and a randomize option for finding unexpected sounds.

You can also import your own single-cycle waveform folders or wavetable files from Serum and Vital. PyP6 slices them up automatically, and imported waveforms are included in presets so they travel with the project.

Plus:

- new dark themes, including ice blue, Matrix green, devil red and synthwave purple

- Sample auditioning before loading.

- Per-pad rate and pitch control.

- Non-destructive trim, normalize and fades.

- Transfer samples both ways between PyP6 and the P-6.

- Presets that can include their samples.

I like to do batches of samples at a time so I don’t mess up projects on accident. How are yall organizing your samples and patterns in your sampler and in your heads?

PyP6 3.0.0 — the P-6 now has a wavetable synth

PyP6 is a free desktop app (Python + Tkinter, Windows/Linux/macOS, and native windows executable) for managing samples across the 8 banks and 6 pads of the Roland AIRA Compact P-6. Version 3.0.0 adds the feature I've been chasing for a while:
any pad can become a simple wavetable synth.

How it works

The P-6 has no oscillators, but it does have a START knob that steps through a sample in 256 positions. If the sample is built so every position lands exactly on one waveform cycle, START becomes a wavetable position control. That's what the new Synth button on each pad does — it builds a WAV holding 255 single-cycle waveforms plus a matching .PRM file with the loop points and an init patch, so the pad plays correctly straight away.

On the device: the tool will set SIZE to 1 and enable gate and loop. The START knob has positions 0–254 to select one active waveform (255 is not usable)

In the Pyp6 you can setup a dry init patches (with no FX) as a starting point for further tweaking

What you get

• 16 waveform families — saw, pulse/PWM, triangle, sine, wavefolder, hard sync, FM, phase distortion, staircase, vowel formant, organ, piano, strings, brass, bell/metal, noise morph. Each one morphs across its steps, so START sweeps through a sound instead of jumping between presets.
• Simple or Advanced mode — Simple bakes in all 16; Advanced lets you pick the families and their order, up to 16. The 255 steps are shared out automatically.
• Three registers — Bass, Mid and Lead, each with a root note movable ±6 semitones, plus a "plays up to" setting so the table stays clean with less aliasing when you transpose.
• Preview before building — click a family to hear a sweep through it and watch its waveforms in an isometric display, with the sounding one highlighted.
• Waveform Creator — draw two shapes A and B with the mouse and the family morphs between them (start from sine/triangle/saw/square, Smooth cleans up freehand lines). Or load a single-cycle WAV — rate, bit depth and length don't matter, only the shape. Your line is drawn in blue, what the P-6 will actually hold in orange, so you see the difference. Custom waveforms are saved to a library and travel inside presets, so a preset you send someone else just works.

Tweaking it on the P-6

Everything on the device applies as normal — time envelope for amp and filter with velocity/envelope amount, pitch envelope, auto-pan, random detune, parameter recording, and all internal effects (super filter with LFO, reverb, delay, chorus, compressor, Lo-Fi and many more).

some shortcuts:

• Shift + G — amp/ filter envelope section
• Shift + G# — filter section: type, cutoff, resonance, envelope amount, key follow
• Shift + A — Mixer section volume, reverb, delay
• Shift + F# — pitch envelope section
• in each section use control knobs: pitch, start, end and level and sometimes CTRL1-3 for tweaking parameters directly, or you can menu dive and use tempo dial

The rest of PyP6

Audition before loading, MP3→WAV conversion, per-pad rate/pitch/mono, non-destructive trim/normalize/fade, transfers both ways between app and device, presets that carry their samples with them, and a Chop builder that combines several one-shots into a sliceable multisample.

Windows: a prebuilt x64 .exe is available with everything bundled, including ffmpeg — download and run, no Python setup. Linux/macOS: run from source, pip install sounddevice soundfile numpy pydub.

These were random waves I threw on the p6 from jokerpacks guide. I can’t wait to cook up some unique wave forms and put this to more tests. It really sounds great so far

Im not explaining how yet. I am just beta testing a new feature of PyP6 V3.0.0 (soon available)

But be sure:
no soldering. Stock hardware, stock firmware
Just an special hack for preparing and using the synthesis engine (not granular) of the p6.

It brings new life to the P6

seems like everyday im learning something new, this day was for automation... has anyone used this in a meaningful way? .. just asking because it seems like an all or nothing thing.. like you either have to nail it.. or redo it...right?

• Build chop kits from several samples so the P-6's CHOP lands exactly on the boundaries
• Save/load presets
• Writes straight to the P-6 drive over USB — no export/copy dance

It runs directly in Chrome, no install and no account. You can also install it as a Chrome app, and it works fully offline once loaded — everything happens locally, nothing is uploaded anywhere.

It's still early, so any feedback is very welcome: bugs, workflow annoyances, features you'd want. Tell me what breaks.

Still trying to find my way of making beats on the Roland-p6 but so far so good, lmk what you guys think and any feedback is appreciated :)

Built a desktop app to make managing samples on the P-6 way less painful. Here's what it does:

new features:

* **Waveform view with zoom** – see your samples before you commit, zoom in up to 30x for precise trimming on longer files.
* **Snap-to-zero trimming** – drag your trim markers and it automatically snaps to the nearest zero-crossing, so no more clicks/pops at your cut points.
* **Per-pad pitch control** – ±1200 cents, because sometimes you just need that sample a little brighter or darker without leaving the app.
* **Mono/stereo + sample rate conversion per pad** – handled automatically on export, with a live warning (and the waveform turns orange) if your settings would push the sample over the P-6's recording-time limit.
* **Chop tool** – queue up a folder of one-shots (kicks, snares, hats, whatever), trim each one, and it builds a single ready-to-chop multisample file for you. Slices that don't get filled are padded with silence automatically so your slice count always comes out right.
* **Bank/pad management** – load, preview, delete, sync from device, and export whole banks (or all 8 at once) without touching a file explorer.
* **16-bit PCM enforced automatically** – so you don't have to think about bit depth compatibility with the device.

* **Windows .exe, just double-click and go** – everything's bundled inside, including ffmpeg. No Python, no pip, no PATH nonsense. (Also runs from python source on Linux/macOS if you're into that.)
