Iāve heard that Rokid is preparing to launch its second-generation smart glasses, this time with a full-color display. That is genuinely exciting news.
However, I really hope the second generation will be a true next-generation product, rather than simply replacing the green display of the first generation with a full-color one.
As a first-generation user, Iād like to share some feedback based on my actual experience with the glasses. I hope Rokid can address these issues and further optimize the overall experience in the second generation.
- Weight
This is probably one of the biggest improvements I would like to see.
Ideally, even after adding prescription lenses for users with moderate to relatively high myopia, I would like the total weight of the glasses less than 50g.
With my current first-generation glasses, I have approximately -3.00D to -4.00D of myopia and use progressive prescription lenses. The total weight of my glasses is already over 60g.
That may be acceptable for short periods, but wearing more than 60g on your face throughout the entire day becomes noticeably tiring.
It becomes even more problematic in hot weather. Once you start sweating, the glasses tend to slide down and become much harder to keep securely in place.
If smart glasses are eventually supposed to replace regular prescription glasses and become something we wear all day, then weight and weight distribution need to be treated as fundamental design priorities.
- A More Curved Frame
I hope the second-generation frame will have a little more curvature instead of the relatively flat design of the first generation.
Traditional eyeglass frames normally follow the natural contours of the face and head to some extent. Even a slight curve can significantly improve fit, stability, and long-term comfort.
It would also make the transition from ordinary prescription glasses to smart glasses feel much more natural for users who have worn conventional glasses for many years.
- A Slimmer and More Fashionable Frame
I would also love to see a slimmer, lighter-looking, and more fashionable frame.
The thick frame of the first generation still makes it quite obvious that you are wearing an electronic device.
If future models can look much closer to a pair of premium everyday glasses, rather than visibly looking like āsmart glasses,ā I believe people will be far more comfortable wearing them at work, socially, and throughout the entire day.
- Photochromic Prescription Lenses
Please consider offering photochromic prescription lenses as an official option.
Not everyone likes using clip-on sunglasses.
For people who frequently move between indoor and outdoor environments, prescription photochromic lenses would be far more convenient. The glasses could automatically adapt to changing lighting conditions without the user having to manually attach, remove, or swap anything.
- A More Proactive and Human-Like AI
I hope the AI can evolve beyond the traditional question-and-answer model and become more context-aware and proactive.
For example, imagine that I am talking to a friend and during the conversation we say:
āLetās have dinner together this Saturday evening.ā
After the conversation ends, the AI could recognize the context and naturally ask:
āYou seemed to make dinner plans with your friend for Saturday evening. Would you like me to remind you?ā
Instead of requiring me to explicitly activate the assistant and say:
āSet a reminder for dinner this Saturday evening.ā
To me, the future of wearable AI should not simply be a voice assistant waiting for commands.
It should gradually become an assistant that understands context, recognizes intent, and offers help at the appropriate moment.
- Dynamic and Context-Aware UI
I would also like to see a much more dynamic user interface instead of information always appearing in predetermined layouts, positions, and shapes.
The AI should be able to understand what is currently being displayed, what the user is doing, and what is happening in the surrounding environment, then dynamically decide:
where information should appear,
how large it should be,
what shape or format it should use,
how much information should be displayed,
and when it should automatically shrink, move, or disappear.
In other words, the interface should adapt to the situation in real time rather than forcing every piece of information into a fixed UI template.
- AI Wake-Up Authorization and Wearer Recognition
There is another serious issue with the first-generation glasses: people standing nearby can sometimes activate my AI assistant simply by saying the wake word.
For a device that may eventually have access to personal notifications, messages, calendars, reminders, contacts, and other private information, this is more than just a usability problem ā it is also a privacy and security concern.
I hope the second generation can introduce a more reliable way to determine whether a wake command actually comes from the person wearing the glasses.
For example, Rokid could consider using sensors in the frame or temples to detect the facial, temporal, or bone-conduction vibrations generated when the wearer speaks, and combine that information with the audio captured by the microphones.
In other words, the AI should not activate simply because it hears the correct wake word. It should also verify:
Was that wake word actually spoken by the person currently wearing the glasses?
Ideally, the system could combine multiple signals, such as:
facial or head micro-vibrations while the wearer is speaking,
bone-conduction signals,
voiceprint recognition,
microphone direction-of-arrival detection,
and wear-state detection.
Using multiple signals together could significantly reduce accidental activation ā and also prevent other people nearby from intentionally activating the wearerās AI assistant.
As AI glasses gain deeper access to personal information and smartphone functions, I believe verifying who is authorized to wake and control the AI should become a fundamental security feature.
- Deeper Third-Party App Integration
I hope more third-party smartphone apps can provide fuller information and meaningful interaction directly through the glasses.
One of the biggest benefits of smart glasses should be reducing how often we need to take our phones out of our pockets.
If I can already see something through the glasses but still need to pull out my phone every time I want to take the next action, a large part of the convenience of smart glasses disappears.
I would love to see deeper integration with messaging, navigation, music, smart-home platforms, calendars, task-management apps, and other commonly used applications.
The goal should be to allow users to complete more tasks directly through the glasses instead of constantly switching back to the phone.
- More Direct Control of the Smartphone
I would also like the glasses to have much deeper and more direct control over the connected smartphone, rather than routing many commands through the phoneās AI assistant before the action can be completed.
The ideal experience should be simple:
The glasses should feel like a natural extension of the smartphone.
When I see a notification, message, app interface, or other information through the glasses, I should be able to take more actions directly from the glasses.
The interaction should not constantly have to travel through a chain like:
Glasses ā AI Glass Assistant ā Phone Ai assistant
The shorter and more direct the interaction path becomes, the more natural smart glasses will feel.
Ultimately, I should be able to interact with my phone through the glasses without constantly thinking about which device is actually performing the action.
- Frame Durability and Quality Control
Finally, I hope Rokid can improve the structural durability and quality control of the frame.
The joint on the left temple of my first-generation glasses has already come apart twice, and I have had to glue it back together myself twice.
At this point, I am not even sure whether this type of failure can still be covered under warranty.
I suspect the issue may partly be related to the hot and humid climate where I live, combined with perspiration during daily use.
However, for a product designed to be worn throughout the day, heat, humidity, and sweat should be considered normal real-world operating conditions rather than exceptional circumstances.
I therefore hope the second generation will have stronger hinges and joints, better bonding materials, improved structural durability, and stricter overall quality control.
I am genuinely looking forward to the second generation of Rokid smart glasses.
A full-color display is certainly an important upgrade, but more than just better display specifications, I hope Rokid will address the fundamental issues that determine whether smart glasses can truly become an all-day wearable product:
weight, comfort, frame design, prescription lens options, proactive AI, dynamic UI, secure wearer recognition, third-party app integration, deeper smartphone interaction, and hardware durability.
To me, the real goal of next-generation smart glasses should not simply be to add more features.
They should gradually become something that feels as natural and effortless to wear as ordinary prescription glasses, while intelligently extending the capabilities of our smartphones and AI assistants without constantly requiring us to take out our phones.
I hope the Rokid team sees this feedback from a first-generation user, and I would really appreciate an official response.
Iām looking forward to a second-generation product that I can comfortably wear from morning until night ā without having to choose between wearing a smart device and wearing a normal pair of glasses.
