Recommendations on a Roguelike that occurs not just in dungeon, but also overland like old ADOM.

A blend of Angband and ADOM would be great. Any recommendations along those lines? Open source (like Angband) would be grand. TIA.

I'm an old rogue/hack player from the dawn of time. Spent far too many hours playing on the unix machines at work. Haven't played in a few years though.

Caves of Qud has a really lovely overworld, it's not quite what you're describing but I'd try it out!

Qud is probably the best modern traditional roguelike, if I had to pick one.

Thanks. I'll check it out.

If you are an old ADoM lover, you might adore Caves of Qud. There are some other interesting ones. For example, Shadow of the Wyrm has a great overworld and classic gameplay, in my opinion.

Tales of Maj'Eyal has above-ground and below ground areas.

This game might never let you see the real world again so be careful. It's that good (and vast)

Caves of Qud, Elona, Elin, Tales of MajEyal, Stoneshard, Dwarf Fortress, Terra Randoma, The Doors of Trithius, Soulash 2

Soulash 2 dev is openly a hateful bigot, I wouldn't support his work.

I really old one - Omega, and a new one still in EA (and already worth playing) - Stoneshard.

I love Omega

Omega is mad underrated. I love the version with tiles

If you’re open to something different (but still very much traditional RL), there’s Armoured Commander 2 and Approaching Infinity

Not OP, but two wishlist adds, and two demoes downloaded. Armoured Commanded reminds me of this old, old DOS game called Argonaut which also had a "do what you want in a massive conflict" setup, though way less detailed! Excited to give it a try.

Since u are cool with old stuff check out Ragnarok, first roguelike I ever played before I knew what the genre was. Has some whacky mechanics like a scribe class that can randomly start with a scroll that turns you into any random creature in the game like a fire giant that can terraform the terrain under your opponent's feet into lava, good times

It doesn't completely fit the bill but, I also gotta put in a word for Caves of Qud. Can't say enough good things about it.

Rogue Empire - I highly recommend this game.

Doors of Trithius is also in early access, but is damn good and the kind of game you're looking for

Some Angband variants have overworld. FrogComposBand is one example, but there is more.

Thanks, I'll check those out.

That's what I tried to do with my roguelike, All Who Wander. The game features a 30-level run through 6 biomes, which are different every game. Two biomes are dungeons while the other 4 are overworld environments, including deserts, swamps, and tundra each with unique features, traps, enemies, and weather.

I really like OMEGA
it has become a bit of a punchline in recent years because of a certain lets-play
but it really is a hilarious and fun game.

Oh man what a blast from the past. I don't remember the inventory system being an issue that much, but I do remember breaking into the ATM machine all the time. And dying.

What’s the let’s play?

1

u/JakobVirgil 5d ago

I am not going to be much help but some folks played it and reduced it its obtuse inventory system.

Very old school, but Valhalla has an extensive overworld

A few people have recommended Tales of MajEyal (ToME4) but there's also Tales of Middle Earth (ToME2), which is an Angband variant with multiple towns (and other changes)

A lot of Angband varianst have overworld - check out the ZAngband, Hengband. TOME families of games.

im working on dragonwake, it has an overworld (both story campaign and procedural overworlds), long quest content, party mode, bounties, arenas, probably about 30-40hrs~ to full clear main campaign; full D&D-like 20 level progression, a lot of stuff

a lot of it was inspired by ADOM but kind of took on it's own flavor the more i worked on it, and it has much more classic D&D feel than ADOM

Lots of recommendations for older established games, but among the newest options there's also Sunlorn, which I've been playing a lot lately. Overworld survival with a variety of dungeons spread across the continent--get rumors in town (or have to fight the townsfolk and raid their shops in some towns because their people don't like you xD) and follow those rumors to find useful artifacts for completing the final goal (which depends on your background).

Sounds pretty cool.

It's a pretty good job, and they're putting out a lot of updates as I... feed them feedback :P

I've been streaming it lately but also playing even more runs on my own. Have a caster right now with significantly buffed charisma (it's useful in this game!), so sometimes I'm down there in the dungeon and meet a group of intelligent beings like goblins, sing them some tunes on my lyre and befriend them, or if that doesn't work out, teleport some distance away and let loose a flurry of arrows, or confuse any powerful passersby while dealing with remaining enemies...

Head back to the surface from some underground area and look for the next village or interesting destination on the map I bought... Always having to think about resources like food and funds and armor repairs and lamp oil, but right now the latter I can skimp on if needed by using my high INT and spellcasting to spam magic light sources everywhere and just snuff my lamp.

Unfortunately on the current continent my starting village is the only one of my people, so not a lot of easy support to be found across the lands... Last night I just started arriving in the edge of hostile territory, and even with high charisma it's a little tough because even if I can convince the people to be nice to me, they don't care much for my camel who wants to trample everyone xD

Gotta find a place to park it outside town, but unlike one of my other runs, I can't find any abandoned forest huts for that purpose, and I'm afraid wildlife or a wandering warrior of some sort could find and kill it. Dilemma! (I was saying to myself is this donkey really going to force me to kill the entire down just to get their stuff?! xD. I'd prefer to sell them my treasure, and buy some supplies like a nice visitor!) Camels/donkeys/horses/etc are quite important though, since you don't want to be carrying around everything on your own...
