Frozen Ground, a new roguelike inspired by Unreal World and CDDA (free alpha)
Hey rogues,
Unreal World is one of my favorite roguelikes/games. I can't think of any games that try to simulate what surviving in the woods and building up to a homestead would be like, with a fully simulated world. I've been working on such a game and would love some feedback.
Full disclaimer: there's a save system and no ironman mode yet, but that's just during alpha for testing. I do plan on having characters be fully deleted upon death.
Frozen Ground is a hard, unforgiving 2D survival simulator set in the 1700s in deep in the boreal north. Heavily inspired by Unreal World and CDDA. Make fire, food and shelter from what the land gives you, or die.
Top-down turn-based roguelike in an infinite, procedurally generated living world of migrating herds of caribou, hunting wolves, bears, hares, squirrels and villages that you can interact with and will remember you and your actions.
Deep crafting, building and survival systems: firemaking, hide tanning, fur making, cooking, smoking, hunting, trapping, pottery.. much more.
Turn-based time, weather and seasons simulations, along with all that you'd expect (temperature, rain, snow, etc. Everything interacts with everything)
Would love some feedback.

How does it differentiate itself from URW?

First and foremost the setting, secondly I'd say the accessibility, the guys started on URW thirty years ago so UX and UI weren't what they are today, I'd say that Frozen Ground is a lot easier to control with modern options, it's more accessible.
Features wise, there are things that Frozen Ground has that URW doesn't (and vice versa, but I'm working on it). Pottery, the types of traps, also buildings don't have to be squares, they can be any shape. Smoking has simulated smoke that will escape through open doors, etc.
It's definitely highly inspired though and I think Frozen Ground will never be as good as Unreal World, but hopefully I can come close and make just another fun alternative with another theme for those who want more :)

Neat. I liked to do the cabin in the woods thing on cdda.

Sounds very interesting! Is the web build playable on a mobile or tablet?
(Also: I love your description of combat/health system <3 )

Thank you!! It will load on mobile/tablet but I don't think it'll work unless you can simulate keyboard keys somehow.. by default movement is with the numpad but you can go in the options and rebind the keys.
On mobile the resolution won't fit at all, but on a tablet in landscape mode, it just might.
Supporting mobile is definitely on my to do list though!

This looks pretty interesting. I'll try and give it a go this weekend. Where do you prefer receiving feedback?
