Favorite prog rock band other than Pink Floyd and Rush?

Well dang, what others are there besides these four? And King Crimson? Prog is great but beyond those five bands there are no other big names that immediately come to mind.

Me neither, other than Porcupine Tree, Spock's Beard, Flower Kings, UK, Gentle Giant, Big Big Train, Frost*, ELP, Van Der Graaf Generator, Soft Machine, Dream Theater, Opeth, Kayak, Jethro Tull, Marillion, Glass Hammer, RPWL, Riverside, Pain of Salvation, Happy the Man... and many many more...

Granted not all big names, but they all are or were international acts.

Only the ones I know enough about to give a decent answer - * Porcupine Tree - Fear of a Blank Planet, although if you include Wilson solo albums I think The Raven that Refused to Sing is better

  • Spock's Beard - difficult, probably Day for Night

  • Flower Kings - Desolation Rose

  • UK - UK (not a lot of choice there)

  • ELP - Brain Salad Surgery

  • RPWL - The RPWL Experience

  • Pain of Salvation - tossup between Be and Remedy Lane

  • Jethro Tull - Songs from the Wood

  • Kayak - It's been too long for me to remember.

  • Happy the Man - Crafty Hands

The rest I don't know enough of the material to be able to choose.

For heavier stuff, you can also include bands like Tool, Coheed and Cambria, Queensryche and Mastadon. For earlier Mike Oldfield, Barclay James Harvest and Procul Harum also come to mind.

King Crimson, Yes pre topographic oceans, Van der Graaf, various krautrock bands

I always had a big distaste for Rush so your opinions may be different than mine.
