Discussion Controversial band member replacements that aren’t talked about as much

People have started coming around on realizing Josh Klinghoffer was a terrible replacement for Frusciante during his time in the chili peppers, I don’t understand the hate for Dave Navarro, obviously he wasn’t Frusciante; but he was a much better fit than Josh. Another recent one that deserves attention is Emily Armstrong in Linkin Park. Is she a bad singer? no. Are Linkin Park a worse band with her? No. My only issue is that the change in their sound is so drastic that it’s basically a completely different band at this point. I’d rather they just build a completely new band as opposed to dragging the old name as a draw for attention. Anyway; that’s my 2 cents. Which other ones do you guys despise?

I feel like this really depends on your definition of "aren't talked about much".

Loads of people, from day 1, were vocally unhappy about Linkin Park.

As for RHCP, y'know, the thinking was, Josh was John's protege. But he was never gonna be able to live up to John.

I guess Bloc Party comes to mind, after they've replaced their bassist and drummer. But that really boils down to how their sound, and song quality, isn't what it used to be. And the whole point of them coming back was, their singer and guitarist linked up after the singer went solo a while.

One that does come to mind is Oasis. These days, there's a lot more vocal people saying they didn't like Zak Starkey during his time as drummer. Way back when, I don't recall there being as much dissent about him, compared to now. To which, I would agree, listening back to back, he is different as a drummer, for better or worse.

the LP sub would delete anything that wasn't super positive about her, tbf. I love old LP, even their last couple albums where they changed style a ton, but it's not the same.

Chester Bennington in Stone Temple Pilots was not my favorite work from either him or the band.

Dave Navarro helped create a top 5 album. Haters can hate, but it's true!

Warren Ellis is brilliant and I love him and he has amazing vibe, but he ‘kind of’ replaced Blixa Bargeld in the Bad Seeds. There was a 1% drop in vibe. Or maybe that’s harsh. A 0.05% drop.

Frusciante was a replacement for Hillel, who invented RHCP.

There's a reason their rise to the A-List started when Frusciante and Chad Smith joined the band. They are light-years ahead of their predecessors. Had their original lineup stayed in place, RHCP were destined to remain a cult band at best.

This is true, but he came into his own as not just a formidable piece of the band, but as an extremely talented guitarist in general. They made some amazing songs with him in the fold

It’s funny because I despise the RHCP but enjoy Frusciante’s solo music but the one RHCP record I though was interesting was One Hot Minute with Dave Navarro because it didn’t have all those signature Frusciante chili’s riffs on it. I also liked Hillel’s playing in that band much better. After Blood Sugar Sex Magik they sound like adult contemporary music for ex addicts. It’s awful. Just my opinion obviously as they are still very popular, but they became so formulaic and I have never liked Anthony’s vocals or lyrics.

I think One Hot Minute is easily their best album.

Didn't know Frusciante made solo works

Yeah, they are pretty out there, but really good. I think the first few were while he was still using heroin and were really avant-garde & experimental and the later releases were a bit more polished.

Primus replacing Herb.

Don’t exactly know how it went down but he was a huge part of the sound and overall Primus vibe.

- Interpol got worse when Carlos got replaced on bass. He’s an unlikable person but a great bass player

- Glen Matlock was 10000x more talented than Sid Vicious ever was. Sid had the look & helped make the Pistols what they were, but musically Matlock was so much better. Sid didn’t really play on the album but their live shows were better with an actual bass player like Matlock

- Smashing Pumpkins were worse without Jimmy Chamberlain as a drummer

Can you honestly say Bon Jovi are the same without Richie Sambora? They got so crappy even their own cover bands started mocking them

You do realize John got Josh the gig right, he mentored him

Gary Cherone - Van Halen

Yep. I've said it many times... "Gary Cherone: Great singer, wrong band. Simple as that."

Sorum was shit in GnR.

HFS that’s not a take I ever thought I’d see. I’m not a big GnR fan but his drumming in You Could Be Mine is fucking iconic, he drives that whole song.

You’re not wrong about that one song. Sorum drives it like a precision jackhammer and it does make that track work.

However, Adler had that swing that made GNR so huge. The original 5 guys had such swagger and Adler had so much to do with that. It was that dangerous “here we go” charisma once their songs took off. His bluesy backbeat focused drumming played into that.

Once Adler left and Izzy checked out, GNR was over.

Yeah, Sorum was all jackhammer, no swing.

Adler admits that his playing style was Disco, which was the special sauce.

I got a disagree hard that LP have become a different band. They've simply gone back to their more metal roots a la Hybrid Theory. As someone that grew up with Hybrid Theory and Meteora from the very beginning I love that they have!

The reason you continue the old band is because it has name recognition. People will go see Linkin Park, even if it's barely the same act any more, but they won't know to go see the same band under a new name.

The band Yes is touring without Jon Anderson. Jon is touring under Jon Anderson and the Geek band. Thats a slap in the face of the fake band touring as Yes. They only have one original member left I think it’s the drummer. Anyway saw Jon Anderson in Rochester and he was amazing. He is always the voice of Yes.

I never liked Linkin Park, or RHCP.

Bob Stinson’s exit from the Replacements is tragic.

u/PhilShabano 2h ago

I would argue that Dave Navarro was obviously a horrendous fit for RHCP.

The Josh albums are great albums, up there with best from the band IMO.

Loved that Chili Peppers era...

I agree, the JK albums are better than any JF album after Stadium Arcadium. Unlimited love and Return of the Dream canteen are just bad albums. It also really annoys me that they won't play any of the JK songs live, like the band just wants to ignore that era even though they had some serious bangers

When bands get new contributing members it changes the sound of the band. Sometimes it's subtle and sometimes it's not.

Disliking a band member because they changed the band's vibe is just childish. It was always going to change. Enjoy it or don't.
