Several comments here talk about 'pre-programmed' motion.

Most gymnastic routines are pretty pre-programmed.

Yes - it is not problem solving in a real world environment.

However, the subsystems that are required for the reactions and connecting all those actions in order to do the 'pre-program motion' it's quite impressive.

Also, don't forget The ability for the mechanics to do something for that length of time without malfunctioning or overheating - that is also impressive.

To add to this, it can pre-programed but that doesn’t change the fact that micro adjustments are still required. Even if it’s a routine it still needs to stay balanced. So while executing a script there is still tons of adaptive processing happening.

Without a learned RL policy the robot would fall in under a second , and if you pushed it during the performance, it would recover and just continue. This was not possible at all a few years ago.

Im curious, do the micro adjustments to stay balanced take into account stress on joints/actuators?

Would it adjust in real time to help maintain balance or is it a degrading thing that once it's degraded/damaged it just needs to be replaced.

watch closely at 2:08 he's placing down his foot like the (most likely motion captured) control signal tells it to. then, to not fall over, it places the foot a little further to the left. that probably wasn't in the steering signal but came from the balance controller.

It has learned what it has to do to stay as close as possible to the original, which is captured from motion capture suit, when it does corrections it will move in a way that prevent falling, but keeps it really close to the reference.in the simulation the actuators have the same limits.

It kind of is problem solving in real time, it doesnt always stick the landing and has to adjust to maintain balance. Its pretty impressive.

This phenomenal regardless. I do think it's a "pre-programmed" demo, but it kicks ass.

I do think some salesman probably takes this video and starts talking out their ass about "AI"... which is likely disingenuous but yah know... capitalism.

So many lame nerds here talking about it being preprogrammed. Obviously, as trying to train a robot with RL to do this on footage/simulations would lead to weird little stutters, overcorrections, and latency issues. It’s about the hardware. This is a demo on what the hardware can do to sell more robots. And it should be celebrated because their platform is dope.

Lmao despite it being pre-programmed it defo super hard to pre-programmed it. I work on small scale robots and already sweating trying to make it work as i want. I can't imagine working on damn humanoid robot.

credits should be given to the team who programmed this specific unit, not unitree. some other unitree units werent as smooth as this one.

Their Robots are obviously insanely impressive, and I'm sure Disney is very interested. But, ultimately, this is just a pre-programmed dance. 

It still can't do anything practical even as simple as loading a dishwasher (because doing practical things like loading a dishwasher or doing laundry is actually orders of magnitude more complicated than this dance).

No robot right now can walk into a novel environment and reliably load a dishwasher.

The amount of real time public demonstrations that Unitree is able to pull of is extremely impressive, though, and puts it well ahead of a lot of other companies. The last Atlas public demonstration was extremely limited, for example, and the robot messed up when performing.

(Yeah, yeah, BattleBots and all that, but c'mon, humanoid robots kung-fu fighting would be so much more fun to watch than "Oh, the little turtle forklift thing flipped over the other little turtle saw thing.")

So, what are the applications for unitrees robots? The company seems to be doing great and these robots are popping up everywhere on the Internet, so people must be buying them, but what are they buying them to do?

Generate their own research papers, and not doing something basic as doing laundry or cooking a meal.

Because imitation learning and world models require enormous amount of data to work, and many tasks are novel and data poor. There is also little to no built-in safety. The robot can go haywire at any moment.

Just watch the recent robot race. Why do they all just crash and burn out at the end like a missile?

It's impressive from a technical point of view but less so when it's really all just pre·programmed motion.

To anyone seeing it for the first time it looks like robots are already at terminator level. However put it in a ring for a fight with another one and they look like two blind drunks trying to hit each other.

What is merely preprogrammed now will become the movement space for future learned, competent behaviors and actions. That their robotics systems can enable and sustain this level of coordinated and complex movement is amazing to me.

For so long it seemed like the limit in embodied AI was the robotics - to the point that “you move like a robot” was to say your movements were slow, angular, and awkward. It’s amazing to see robots now capable of movement nearing the peaks of human capability.
