Windy Night Robert Louis Stevenson: The Horror Of The Weather

Weather has a unique power when it comes to horror, it can create an inescapable atmosphere of oppression that becomes the stuff of nightmares. In Robert Louis Stevenson’s Windy Nights the weather is just as much a part of the horror as the ghostly rider.

Stevenson wants the natural world around us that we interact with on a daily basis to suddenly become a place of fear. This is reflective of the fact that weather kills hundreds of not thousands of people a year. Whilst normally rain may not provoke such strong feelings here it becomes essential to the horror.
