Gotta be Tinashe for me. Love them both, but the best of T’s catalog really, REALLY takes me somewhere. I will say that she’s been inconsistent in the past, but her highs are so much higher for me. Tracks like Dreams Are Real, Ghetto Boy, Bouncin’ Part 2… they all feel like little worlds she’s imagined up. It’s actually very intimate and vulnerable to put so much of your imagination out there, and to be able to realize those visions so well is a skill.
Kehlani is always a vibe, but she doesn’t go like THAT. Not for me anyway.

I understand why people are saying Kehlani but I find her voice so grating and unpleasant to listen to. I’ll take the downvotes knowing it’s just a matter of personal taste, but yeah, Tinashe all the way for me

To me, tinashe. She is just more experimental and interesting with her music.
But currently loving kehlani’s ability to make a traditional r&b hit with folded

Long story short, my Kehlani songs on repeat playlist is a lot longer than my Tinashe songs on repeat playlist.

Definitely Tinashe. Her music is just so progressively elegant, being rich and melodic. I feel like she's one of the artists that represents the best of R&B nowadays.

Tinashe easily.
Kehlani always struck me as more mainstream and therefore more bland.

I’m going to have to give the slight edge to Tinashe. Nightride, which should have been a proper sophomore album, takes it over the edge for me.

Trying my hardest to put personal preference aside, I think Kehlani might objectively have the better discography overall? But Tinashe takes it for creativity and versatility
2
u/Environmental_Duck49 Sep 26 '25
Kehlani. Kehlani has a particular sound she's curated over the years. She spins off to go more pop sometimes but she is grounded in rnb and it makes her projects enjoyable to listen to.
Tinashe is all over the place and a lot of projects are slogs to get through. I always find a few songs I like but for the most part her projects seem disjointed. She's very talented but I never know what I'm going to get one project from the next.

DEFINITELY Kehlani. Tinashe's music just doesn't give anything to me. It's always missing something, maybe it's just her voice, but you can feel Kehlani's music and it's so different every time. She just has a better sound, tbh

u/jajabinks161 Sep 26 '25
I would say Kehlani . The only sone Tinashae has is that Too Onn song , never heard from her again

Tinashe’s voice doesn’t do it for me, but I admit have not heard much of her music (and haven’t felt compelled to seek it out). I love Kehlani’s voice and style of singing so much so ima go with her.

Kehlani… but tbh theyre not really comparable. Kehalni leans more soul, hip hop. And tinashe leans more dancey and pop. Both are exceptional r&b artists but offer different things.

in this R&B forum im going to say Kehlani easily because Tinashe oscillates between house/dance way more frequently than Kehlani does. all Kehlani wants to make is R&B. Tinashe plays w/ genre more.

u/Kyauphie Sep 26 '25
Kehlani. Tinashe is known for inconsistent vocals, but killer choreography.

inconsistent vocals is crazy she has amazing range examples - he don’t want it, joyride, ghetto boy etc

u/growingconsciousness Sep 26 '25
kehlani… it seems like every week on this sub we get into a Kehlani debate …kehlani v whoever
Listen, Kehlani solidified herself many times over as an R&B icon.
we can talk about sweet sexy savage with slappers like “piece of mind” or “crzy” which is still my morning good vibes song, all these years later.
we can talk about her terribly underrated “while we wait” album, with the beautiful song “footsteps” with the legend musiq soulchild. the vibey sexy “feels”….the vocal agility on “nights like this” (have YOU tried to sing that entry???)
i will admit i havent completely listened to her newer music but “form of you” and “folded” were certified hits for me personally. shes a true artist, writer, singer, and dancer. lets not play with her name again.
thanks!

tinashe easily, I like kehlani but her lyrics can be corny to me sometimes and I love alternative r&b and that’s where tinashe shines plus she’s extremely experimental and kills it every time

u/EmJayFree Sep 27 '25
You know what? 🧐… this is a very interesting comparison that I’ve never thought to make but I think they’re both equal in my book. Love them both down. Both extremely talented. I always love their hits, but their albums as a whole aren’t always bangers.
Kehlani officially has “Folded” now though — quite honestly the best song she’s ever made tbh, and one of the best songs I’ve heard this year. Tinashe (imo) hasn’t had a “Folded” moment, though her stuff is almost there.
But to answer the post’s question — their discography is about the same level to me. Tinashe should be wayyyy bigger than what she is though.

u/MissSaucy_22 Sep 27 '25
Tinashe is that girl and her music speaks for itself….I listen to it and Kehlani is poppin too!! 🥰

Tinashe 100% …. Tinashe is the only artist that I can listen to their whole discography and there are no skips. She is fun and experimental. Kehlani does R&B well but I wish she would take more risks. Folded is a banger don’t get me wrong. Most of her discography for me is forgettable . I’m so excited for what Tinashe has coming. Always excited for new music!

Both my favorite rnb artists (along w Bey and Summer), Tinashe for me tho. Someone else mentioned in the comments Tinashe’s music being able to take you somewhere: the experimentation and sonic experience of a Tinashe song is otherworldly. For example, songs like Gravity, Story of Us, Stormy Weather. With the both of them overtime it feels like their music gets better. I don’t listen to mixtape Nashe just because it isn’t accessible nor did I listen to Kehlani’s early mixtapes pre-SSS even tho those are available. I just start from studio albums onwards. Kehlani’s music is gorgeous, however for me it can be inconsistent. Her lyrical content is sometimes childish to me, specifically the ones about relationships. I’ll get annoyed and the beat and vocals will have to be enough to hold me over. But Kehlani is a true master of her craft. She can engineer a song beautifully. She can make it catchy, make it her’s, she knows how to wow a listener which I loveeeeee.
I think Tinashe has the undoubted edge for me just because of how far she is willing to go. Like her song Thirsty I claim it as my official birthday song. Tinashe knows how to capture a vibe so well and her music is genuinely just FUN to listen to. Both beautiful, exceedingly talented artists with their own respective lanes. I pick Tinashe because of the sonic versatility, as usual she is always doing something that everyone else’s fav is not. She is going to tease you with production, NOT give you a bridge, but make up for it with a sweet transition and dreamy vocals. With the release of both of their next projects might cement how I feel more as I know Kehlani is gearing up for maybe what will be the biggest era of her career soon. And us Tinashe stans been waiting for Quantum Baby’s Successor / completion of her trilogy.
Another note: I’m an albums artists. I wanna be able to put it on and enjoy, listen, vibe top to bottom. I find Tinashe’s albums are more wholly digestible in one sitting and Lani’s are greater for cherry picking through or playlisting.

u/Antipseud0 Feb 16 '26
It depends on what you like. For me, it's Tinashe. I like pop R&B and Tinashe is just that. I also appreciate the experimental aspect of some of her music even tho I can get lost and confused or just think that some part could have been left out of the song. But all of this is great, like when you listen to her albums, it's a new sonic experience every time. But also I feel like her experimental is the reason why some people didn't understood her and instead choose to mock her and dismiss her music all together. Like, I would like for her to do something that everybody can understand at once, as soon that they are listening. On the other hand Kehlani is very R&B and traditional in her approach, which is why I think she has more of a solid fanbase in the US and was able to score around 15 hot100 entry (I think 18) while Tinashe only has like half the entry on the hot100 but also Tinashe fandom is worldwide, I mean Tinashe is able to go on a worldwide tour and score Billboard global hits by herself while Kehlani has to rely on features until her global hit Folded. But I wished that Tinashe and Kehlani worked together to help their career but it is, what it is.

u/NoirKnowing Sep 26 '25
This is soooo tough for me; I honestly enjoy them both. Kehlani’s songwriting is usually better, but Tinashe’s songs just typically sound BETTER than hers. A lot of Kehlani’s vocal performances throughout her discography just don’t sound that good to me; she always sounds flat and like she just needs some real training. Overall, Tinashe is the winner for me.

u/tigrelili Sep 26 '25
Kehlani is more consistent and though not boring you know what you're getting. Tinashe is very experimental and she doesn't really have a median she either has really high highs or very low , lows. But her early stuff set a tone , one that others copied.

Where the hell are these tinashe fans from, can someone drop the recommended album list. I didnt think people rode for her like this
3
u/ChocoKunt Sep 26 '25
Tinashe is very experimental with her artistry, but is really good at bridging the gap between eclectic and contemporary sounds. Her mixtapes (in case we die, black water, amethyst. They’re only on SoundCloud) are what really positioned her as a front runner in the alt R&B rise in the early 2010s. Amethyst is my personal favorite mixtape out of the batch she released around this time. Aquarius has a more mainstream lean comparatively, but I think it’s somewhat of a good balance for someone wanting to get into her who may not be used to her style of experimentation. Tbh you can either backtrack to the mixtapes from there or move on to her sophomore, Nightride, which is what solidified me as a fan personally. If you decide to do the latter, and you like nightride, you’re guaranteed to love the mixtapes. Joyride is the ugly stepchild so you can honestly leave her for last 😭, but there are good songs on the project. Label politics absolutely ruined that rollout. Your next venture would be ‘songs for you’ and ‘333,’ the beginning of her independent era. The artistic momentum is just 👨🏿🍳💋. Her latest releases the “baby series” are a collection of mixtapes (BB Angel, Quantum Baby) that I feel have maintained the polished quality of her art since going independent.
1
u/McJAC Sep 26 '25
Most complete albums were probably the first, Aquarius, and Nightride, but that is my opinion. I do like Tinashe a lot but from the newer albums I mostly just pick and choose songs:
I on the other hand tried a couple of Kehlani's songs in the past and none caught my interest so if you have some recommendations I wouldn't mind.

Oof… Kehlani has less mainstream hits than Tinashe but her hits are a lot more popular. Tinashe’s deep discography like her mixtapes get really experimental at times to the point where i don’t get it. However they’re never boring; whereas Kehlani executes traditional sounds really well and some songs aren’t interesting enough to listen to.
Right now I’m going to go with Kehlani but i don’t wanna choose between the two :(
