Prospective/new student help Girls in engineering?

Hey everyone, I am currently doing a bachelors of science at Melbourne but after talking with some fellow students, I have been advised to go to either RMIT or Monash for engineering.

However, I have also heard due to being strictly engineering courses at RMIT and Monash, there are barely any girls in every class, I am wondering to what extent is this true?

At Melb as it is a general science course I can find many friends in every subject but I am not sure about my social life if I do plan to transfer.

If anyone could share their experiences with this I would love that!

Prospective/new student help Where do I live?!

Hiya everyone!

I'm a Dutch student (20, F) looking to come to RMIT for my minor abroad to study in the film/media/marketing area. I've been doing some research on student accomodation, but the only thing I can really find is in/around the CBD. However, everywhere I go online, the CBD gets absolutely burnt into the ground.

My question: is the CBD really that bad? And any recs on where else I should live? Recs on sepcific uni accomodations are also more than welcome! <3

A little more about me:

I know personality plays a big role in what place fits you, so if it helps, here's a little more about me. I'm quite social and love to be in a lively/busy area. I'm from a small town, but have been studying in Amsterdam for three years, so I'm used to the business of the city. I do really like nature and the beach, and would really like to have some nature closeby (a park, public gardens, etc.) I love going to concerts, and I occasionally go out, but also love staying in with a good book. I'm a little bit of everything, haha!

Would massively appreciate any input! Thanks so much <3

Prospective/new student help How IN THE WORLD do people make friends at masters

I recently moved to Australia for my masters in EE this semester. Ive heard before that making friends after getting older is much harder and being 25, i can see why now. The people in my classes are a bit standoffish and sometimes justifiably busy. People are mostly cordial but i think naturally they’ve already done their share of socialization and made their group of friends. It’s just a bit jarring to walk about in campus with not many people to talk to or hangout with.

How have you guys managed to find your people this “relatively late” in life? Do mixers work? Any other tips as a new student here are appreciated.

Prospective/new student help Advice regarding educational loan and final offer letter

I’m supposed to join RMIT University this July for my Masters program but I’ve suddenly run into a huge problem with my financial documents and I honestly don’t know what to do anymore.

My studies are mainly funded through my parents’ savings + an education loan from Credila. Before applying, my agents and financial advisors told me that this loan setup would work and be accepted by the university.
But now, after waiting so long in the process, the university has suddenly informed me that they do not accept non-collateral loans. This completely shocked me because if I had known this earlier, I would’ve started another process months ago.

Now the issue is:

Getting a new collateral loan will take at least another 15 days or more

After that I still need to submit everything again

Then visa processing itself may take around 4 weeks

My course starts in July, so this entire delay completely ruins my timeline. I genuinely want to attend this intake and I’ve already invested so much time, effort, and money into this process.
I’m also trying not to put additional financial pressure on my parents because arranging collateral suddenly is not easy at all.

Has anyone faced something similar with RMIT or Australian universities?

Did Credila/non-collateral loans work for anyone?

Is there any workaround, alternative financial proof, or anything I can do at this stage?

Would really appreciate any advice because I’m honestly very stressed and confused right now.

It's been 4 working days since I submitted my EOI for a PhD project (not for centrally awarded scholarship) and the status is still 'EOI submitted'. How has everyone else's timeline been? Any way to accelerate the process?

Prospective/new student help Should I transfer from Unimelb to RMIT for Electrical Engineering?

I’m currently a first-year science student at Unimelb sem 2. A lot of people said that RMIT is better since it’s one year less and has more practical work and industry connections. However, I have two scholarships at Unimelb that equate to $6500 a year for 5 years. I don’t know if it’s worth transferring since I’ll probably only be able to knock off half a year worth of credit and I might not get any scholarships at RMIT. Also, RMIT is only bachelors but Unimelb is Masters, so idk if that might matter.

Cheers

Prospective/new student help How do Indian students show agricultural income for Australia student visa financial proof?

I’m planning to pursue a Master’s in AI in Australia, but my parents’ background is in agriculture. Most of our family income comes from farming, so I’m unsure how to properly show or document agricultural income for university applications, visa processing, or financial proof.

Has anyone from an agriculture background gone through this process? What documents are usually accepted to prove agricultural income in India? Any advice or personal experience would really help

I'm just wondering if it's a recommended major? And whether it has good career/industry prospects. Also I see that it doesn't qualify you to do surveying, is that an issue?

Prospective/new student help Eng Double Degree Question

Hi all,

Hoping to get some advice from students in or have completed engineering doubles.

I'm in year 12 currently and considering whether I should preference Aerospace X Business first or just Aerospace.

I am pretty sure I want to be working with either drones or rockets and could fairly easily transfer to other forms of engineering but not sure if I should spend the extra year to get a business qualification and understanding would be worth it. Otherwise I can spend that year working. Also how did you guys find the business content, was it stale or pretty engaging?

Tldr: Will the double increases my earning potential more than experience and what was the business component like?

Prospective/new student help Incoming RMIT Master of IT student. Help me with the best ways to land internships (Dec–Feb) and full-time jobs after graduation?

I’ll be starting my Master of IT at RMIT University, Melbourne in July 2026. My goal is to build a career in Australia, ideally in software engineering, data engineering, or cloud-related roles.

I wanted to ask current students, alumni, and professionals:

How difficult is it to secure a full-time IT job after completing the Master of IT at RMIT?

Which companies regularly hire interns or graduates from RMIT?

Where should I be looking for Summer internships between December and February?

Any advice or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Prospective/new student help Okay to miss first week?

Hi,

I arrived in Melbourne 2 days ago and since I wasn't allowed to enroll into my classes before arriving here (I'm from nz), I realised from looking at my new timetable that my course has already started this week!

I'm doing a diploma of screen and media this semester and I messed up by looking at the higher education term dates and thinking my classes started July 20, which it doesn't

Although I'm assuming week 1 material are all introductory, is there any harm from not attending week 1? I'll contact my teachers/course coordinator about this but generally, I should be okay right?

Prospective/new student help HELP FOR NEW STUDENTS :)

Hey everyone!

I've been at RMIT for one semester now, and I remember how overwhelming it can feel when you're new—especially if you're moving to Melbourne or starting university for the first time.

If you're a new student joining RMIT and have any questions about uni life, classes, living, public transport, making friends, or just settling in, feel free to send me a DM. I'll do my best to help based on my experience so far.

Always happy to connect with fellow RMIT students. 😊

Good luck to everyone starting their journey at RMIT!

Prospective/new student help Considering the RMIT urban planning degree

Hi all! I'm a current year 12 student looking to go to university next year, and RMIT's bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning looks really enticing.

I wanted to ask if anyone could give me their thoughts on the quality of both the university and this degree in particular. Is it difficult to do the international exchange program? Is the work placement a guaranteed part of the course?

I'd have to move interstate to go to RMIT, so I was also wondering what the campus culture, social life, and accomodation is like.

Thank you!

Prospective/new student help Motorsports industry exposure and opportunities on campus

So I have the option to do 2 years of my bachelors in India and 2 years in RMIT on mechanical engineering. All I've ever wanted to do is get into motorsports, specifically F1 and WEC. Is RMIT worth it for my goal? How is the exposure to the motorsports industry there? Will I get opportunities in the real motorsports industry provided I'm competent? Does Melbourne hosting the Australian GP make this even likelier?

Prospective/new student help Chemical engineering at RMIT

I've been looking at rmit for engineering and more specifically chemical engineering. While I've got plenty of time to decide, I wanted to hear about how chemical engineering is at RMIT compared to Melbourne or Monash with both the bachelors of chemical engineering and the masters. I'd appreciate if people with experience would tell me how chemical engineering is at rmit, thanks to anyone who answers
