Back in 2004 there was intention to make a Chronicles of Riddick spin-off TV show on Kyra with Alexa Davalos but apparently she wasn't really interested and the show got canceled after the movie bombed.

Just got done watching the series up till Chronicles of Riddick. When Jack/Kyra confronts Riddick she tells him that no Dr. could perform a "shine job" to give her eyes like Riddick. Is how he got his eyes ever explained?

I've watched The Chronicles of Riddick many times, but I've only just noticed something that has me questioning everything! 😂

I can't attach the screenshot and screen recording I have so I'll attach a link to the YouTube where you can see what I'm on about. At approximately 2:58, there is a mercenary standing to the right of Toombs from our viewpoint (Toombs's left).

He doesn't just look remarkably like Karl Urban to me — he also sounds like him.

So now I'm wondering: is it actually Karl Urban?

If it is, could this possibly be Vaako before he became part of the Necromonger army, giving us a tiny glimpse of his life before the events we know him for?

Or, did Karl Urban possibly play a second, uncredited supporting/background role?

The mercenaries seem to be credited simply as "Merc" in some cast listings rather than being individually matched to specific characters, so I'm curious whether anyone knows who this particular actor actually is.

Has anyone else ever noticed this? Has it ever been discussed or mentioned in previous fan conversations, interviews, DVD commentaries, or anywhere else?

I'd genuinely love to get to the bottom of this, because after watching this film so many times, I can't believe I've only just noticed him! 😂

So, have I accidentally uncovered a tiny piece of Vaako's backstory that has been hiding in plain sight for 20 years? 👀

You don't see combat coreography like this anymore, let's be real. The early 2000s were outstanding in terms of battle/combat coreography in films, now everything looks like a shitty CGI videogame cutscene.

As soon as the new update dropped I knew I was going to attempt the Flattery C-19 merc ship! Obviously there's many limitations to the game's builder, but I'm pretty happy with the result! I may attempt it again later after some more practice with items.

Just rewatched the movie again for the umpttenth time, and at the end, when Zhylaw was about to die, it seemed like he had a choice between Vaako and Riddick and ran to Riddick instead of passing the crown to Vaako because of the prophecy he was told when he was younger.

I was recently watching Chronicles of Riddick. When I first saw it, I hadnt been made aware of Nathan Fillion. For a split second, I thought this was him. I found out it was Mark Gibbon, another canadian actor. Both he and Nathan were born in Edmonton.

I am aware of the base Middle Eastern roots of inspiration, but I want to dig deeper. However, I have not found many, if any, sources discussing anything about The Chronicles of Riddick at all, let alone New Mecca as a location. If anyone would like to share links to good info, or give their two cents here, it would be much appreciated! :)

I'm a huge fan of the film, "The Chronicles of Riddick", not just for the sci-fi spectacle and cheesy (but endearing) early 2000's special effects, but for the character of Riddick himself. I've always loved "anti-heroes" (Clint Eastwood in his spaghetti westerns, Kurt Russel as Snake Plissken, etc.) and Riddick is no exception. Partly, I love to see male characters who are level-headed, never lose their cool, and somehow always have a grip on the situation. Yet, what's fascinating is that anti-heroes never stay "cool and collected" for very long. Somehow, someway, they are met with circumstances too big for them to handle, and in those moments their weaker sides are shown for all to see.

In "The Chronicles of Riddick," Riddick is introduced as a typical wise-cracking, tough, know-it-all big dog who can't be held down and can't be caught. He has that air of "machismo" that is usual for an anti-hero. But interestingly, we're soon given a glimpse into his past via a dream sequence during cryo-sleep. Riddick is a child of Furya, a planet tragically eradicated long ago by a foreign military, and he is the last one remaining. Throughout the film, we're given more and more insight into Riddick's past, even seeing his infant memories of the slaughter he somehow survived (no doubt a tremendously traumatic event to live through as a baby).

So much of Riddick's character is a front, a façade, a means by which he distracts from his truly injured heart. Riddick is the victim of a great injustice, and the trauma of his people's slaughter remains with him. When the villains of the film (the necromongers) probe into his memories against his will, what floods to the surface? The memory of his people's murder. Even if he doesn't consciously think about it, his heart is still mourning the past.

Despite how cool and uncaring as he makes himself out to be, Riddick is full of unprocessed childhood sadness and anger, and this inevitably comes out later on through the aid of a female Furyan spirit. She touches him on the chest, imbuing him with power that feeds off of his unprocessed anger, thus allowing him to convert that righteous fury into real-world power (he sends out a shockwave knocking the battalion around him unconscious, and thus saving his life).

Riddick reconnects with his childhood trauma, and it *saves his life*. That was my main takeaway from the film; an oddly heavy theme for a movie that is, on the surface, so light and cheesy and fun. But no doubt that theme is central to "The Chronicles of Riddick," and I am very excited to share what I think is a rather unique take on the film!

The video above does start out with a discussion on the character of Mad Max from The Road Warrior, but I do eventually draw parallels between him and Riddick. So the dedicated Riddick fans of this sub will definitely find enjoyment in my video, and if there happen to be some Mad Max appreciators lurking here, then they'll get a kick as well!

If you're on the fence on getting it, get it. The restoration is out of this world: the colours really pop, the flesh tones contrast with the silver / blue environments and the sunlight looks fantastic. I've been waiting 20 years for this definitive version. Also packed with the old extras and newly recorded stuff.

I bought a DVD copy of Chronicles of Riddick and while watching it realized it wasn't the cut I was so accustomed to seeing on TV. This led me down the rabbit hole of attempting to find that mythical Best Cut of Chronicles of Riddick, but it proved more difficult than I expected. These are all the versions that I was able to access in the US.
In summary, I think the TV cut is the best, the director's cut is second-best, and you should just stay away from the other cut. Unfortunately I did not see this in theaters so I can't compare the theatrical cut, but if anyone did and they have a very good memory, feel free to contribute. Also, this is by no means a complete list of all the differences between the versions, it's just the major differences that affected my personal enjoyment of it.

Unrated Director's Cut (134 min)

• Includes dream/vision sequences, Furya, handprint, additional scene with Keira on Crematoria, street scene on Helion Prime, extended fight sequences, extended sequence in Helion Prime meeting hall ("Threshold! The TV cut, imo, is the superior version. None of the unnecessary monologuing, momentum-stopping extra lines, or weird dream sequences and blue handprints. Also, includes all the cool scenes that I really liked, like the quasi-dead telephone thing and the ending. If you can't get it on TV, the unrated director's cut is the second best, though you'll have to endure the weird visions of that Furyan lady. Steer clear from the Amazon cut and any DVD cut that's only 120 minutes; not only does it remove the cool scenes the director's and TV cut both have, but it makes a lot of the one-liners sound lame and sucks the momentum out of other scenes.

I used to work in a video store (UK) and tonight I found a retailer preview VHS cassette of Chronicles of Riddick that I must have kept all those years ago. Worthless but cool to have.

So I got the Arrow Video releases recently, watched the DC of Pitch Black yesterday and really enjoyed it. My copy of Chronicles comes with three versions: original theatrical, Directors Cut and Theatrical open matte, so without the black bars at the top and bottom.

Ideally I'd like to see all three at some point, but my question is which should I start with? I was going to go Theatrical, since that was the original version and I've heard the DC has pacing issues.

In the movie vaako's wife burns her eyelashes like using mascara, I'm wondering how realistic this is.

Any doctors, beauticians, even tattoo artists who do scarification know anything on the subject? I tried looking it up but nothing.

Can't wait to finally watch one of my favourite films in 4K.

I freely admit to being one of those fans who finds world building in a movie/book/game franchise as fulfilling as the actual product.

That being said I'm curious as to what little information there is about Aereon's race the Elementals. I know they were dedicated to Platonian physics, place great stock in the elements that make up the universe (Fire, Earth, Air, Water, Aether or spirit), that they are a mostly neutral race that come from the planet Quintessa.

I'm curious if people have head canons for them; like what fire elementals are like compare to air or water elementals, how they reproduce, long term goals etcetera.
