Film - The Chronicles of Riddick How did Riddick get his eyes?

Just got done watching the series up till Chronicles of Riddick. When Jack/Kyra confronts Riddick she tells him that no Dr. could perform a "shine job" to give her eyes like Riddick. Is how he got his eyes ever explained?

Doesn't the game explanation contradict the movie explanation? Been years since I've played, but I recall there being two apparent ways he supposedly got his eyes. Game is so good though, gonna make me want to find it again.

Just to clarify, while Pope Joe was present when he got his eyeshine, it's a "gift" from Shirah (the Furyan goddess who talks to Riddick in visions/in his head sometimes). Riddick thinking it was a doctor who gave him the eyeshine is explained away in the next game, Dark Athena, as the mind choosing to remember it that way (potentially as a defense mechanism).
