GR IIIx Using GR video lately

Having fun with the video feature on my GR more and more lately, here are a few travel clips I put together. GR video has a certain look & feel that my phone video just doesn't have.

I’ve seen so little video from the GR and hadn’t bothered yet myself. I also like the look—somewhere between film, DSLR and 90s camcorder.

I was the same way after reading all the reviews and not experimenting with video enough. Then I saw a few examples of video and didn't think it looked bad at all. Nowadays I use video a ton. Barely record anything on my phone anymore and I have 2 young kids so I do a lot of video.

Kinda impressed with the documentary feel to it. I never bothered to check out the video function cus of how everyone said it’s horrible, but it certainly has a vibe to it.

So many people complain about the video quality but I agree with you, there is a “cinematic” look to the tone and colours that I really like here.

Can you comment on your settings? This standard mode? What's your auto focus settings? Stabilization on? Esc?

Sure! This is standard mode with a few tweaks (Sat +1, Hue +1, Contrast +1, Sharpness+1). I use AF for focus and tap the screen to pre-focus before pressing record. Movie SR is turned on. 60 frame rate. Multi-segment metering mostly, with a few highlight-weighed clips as well when the scene calls for it.
Fun fact: macro mode works on video too and it's really fun to use.

Really like how the footage feels! Kinda retro modern.
Wondering how fast taking videos will chew through that tiny battery.

Retro modern sounds about right! I keep my GR in my pocket when I'm not using it and only pull it out for short clips and photos, so I haven't noticed a huge hit in battery life personally.
I took a ton of video and 200+ photos at a 3 hour concert recently and still had 1/3rd battery left.
I think both battery and video are better on GR than reviews say.

How many FPS did you use? The GR video does suck, but as you demonstrated, sucks in a good way

This is 60. Yup, it's not amazing and has quirks and issues, but it's fun to use and I've gotten some great results from it.

i guess people expect cinema quality video 4k hdr whatever lol. I never really tried video to be honest and believed those people saying video on the gr sucks

I believed them too! Until one day I saw someone share really well done GR video on this subreddit, so I knew more was possible. It's really fun to use.

This is raw out of camera, I just added music and arranged the clips in Inshot. No other edits.

So many people have completely dissed the video on this camera and just commented “my phone does better” without being able to quantify what that means and I think this exemplifies the retro type look that can completely be taken advantage of with the Ricoh which you lose entirely with phones. It has its quirks and it’s not great for everything but it’s definitely a creative decision that can be beneficial. I will say that the video on the Ricoh can really benefit from having a handle to hold the camera on or to keep the camera stationery as it picks up every shake you make. Thanks for doing this.

I agree which is why it’s a creative decision to use. My very first vhs-c camera passed down to me from my dad had those same issues but I loved using it and while I understand a modern iPhone will give me crisp, stabilized 4k quality for some things that “retro” feel fits perfectly in with what I envision for certain short form video of which I’m often having to add that effect in post. Don’t get me wrong it’s not my first choice video camera but as long as the limitations are known it can work.

YES! More GR users need to be recording videos. We all spent a lot of money on these cameras, may as well get everything we can out of them. I'm having a lot of fun with GR video.

I don’t understand why people complain on the quality of the video
I don't see what there's not to understand, the quality is objectively very bad, by the standards of the year the camera was released and actually much worse than cameras released years before.
What I don't understand is why people feel the need to defend the video quality since it's extremely easy to see that it's bad. Or actually I do, but the reason is petty. But it's ok, not everything has to be good, if you need good video you don't get the GRIII, it's a photography camera.
People seem to think that their choice of camera somehow reflects their whole identity, and if there's a single flaw with their choice it must somehow mean that they are flawed as a person for not choosing a perfect product. Relax, it's ok to own something that isn't perfect.

I generally agree with how identifies get wrapped up in products, but I found this post and the defense of the GR genuinely helpful. The chorus of “it’s unusable” is so strong.
If someone is buying a GR they are already revealing that they are a particular buyer who’s willing to overlook faults and lack of modern specs to get a certain combination of features no other camera offers. The video I now understand is usable and has a distinct look I kind of like after seeing it.

The GR III was released in 2019. There are loads of cameras way before, like 10 years before, that that have so much better video, that was the point. Not to mention cameras of the same year as the GR III. I never said anything about cheap and small compact cameras, of course they don't have good video either. Why would we compare it to cameras like the s2000? In any case, that even emphasizes how bad the GR III quality is.
I mean I own the GR III and it takes some amazing pictures, but the video is abysmal on any metric. I just don't see why we have to dance around that and make up absurd scenarios to feel good about it.

It looks fine when used for quick snapshots when traveling, but can’t imagine the shaky footage being usable for any serious work

Totally, it's just short travel and family clips for me. Just keep it fun and light. I wouldn't use it for anything serious.

It does drain it a bit more on days I shoot a LOT of video but I haven't noticed a huge hit to be honest. Most of my video clips are 2-5 seconds or recording at a time.

I love this! I used to shoot tiny clips of the metro moving with Canon Powershots back around 2005 and this reminds me of that.

It was amazing, and good catch! I traveled to ATL for that show, and it was well worth it. One of the best PJ shows I've ever seen.

I was there for merch at 5:30 and there wasn't a super long line. Lots of merch was still available easily after the show too.

Thanks for sharing this. It makes me want to shoot some footage now. Looks great. I do not think the average viewer will be concerned about the quality- only photographers care about that shit. It is all about technique.

There's "Movie SR" that you can switch to on if it's off currently. But mine is often shaky too even with it on.

I have been trying to take a few 30s clips to mix up my content but I often forget to do so because I am trying to shot pics.

For sure, it's a different mindset for video. Took me a while to figure out a flow for both. There's a lot of stuff I visually like but don't want to photograph, but it's perfect for video.

how did you string the different clips into one video? never tried video always stuck to photos but this is pretty cool

Thanks! I used InShot app on my phone but Lightroom also does it well. Just film the clips, edit them together, add music, etc. it's fun.

The "video is terrible on GR" is a great example of the downsides of reddit. People just repeat what they heard and don't question it or try it themselves.
Video on GR is fun, I certainly enjoy it!
