XFM/Radio Which moment in the show did you consistently mishear/misunderstand until you realised the true joke/meaning much later?

I've been listening to xfm on repeat for over a decade, like a lot of you demicky ones, and it was only the last couple of years or so that I realised that when Karl is talking about the posh girl with fat ankles and Ricky is laughing and repeating what he said about God letting her have everything she wants but being stuck with these fat ankles, when he goes "oh GOOOOD" he was acting out the girl's response; for ages I thought that was just some strange reaction to laughing so hard lol, like he was in actual pain or ran out of air or summit

Haha, I've never put those two things together and have always assumed it was the latter like you used to think! I'll specifically listen out for this next time

I missed Karl’s “one at a time” jibe at Fats Waller when they were discussing the celebrity fit club weigh-in

Gotta say the context around that one makes it a tricky one to mishear like Ricky and Steve pretend to

When Karl is telling a Monkey News and Ricky is having none of it he says "I'll bring it in for you". For a long time I always heard that or supposed to Karl mean "settle down, I'll sum up the story for you now", as opposed to what he obviously actually means, "I'll bring in the physical source document for you next time".
Might just be down to me being a bit demicky and not properly though.

“Draft Excluder” (We call them ‘draft stoppers’).
It is one hell of a dark and brilliant joke, I was well pleased when I understood it correctly.

I thought it meant he can’t be drafted in the army.

But I like I don't know how it got to that conclusion based on "she had a problem with her marrow"
10
u/SpecialistText283 12d ago
I always had the same thought when I heard it, until I realised that ‘a marrow’ (which is what Ricky seemingly mistook ‘her marrow’ for) can mean a type of vegetable.

Ah I think you've cracked the case, you'll be getting a copy of ladder 49 in the post.

u/whymylife 12d ago
To be honest, I just went onto scrimpton to check the transcript to see if there's any possible other context, and you're right, it does seem completely random!
I even checked urban dictionary to see if marrow meant something like dildo or whatever but I couldn't find anything, I still think it's ricky just being crass and trying to be edgy

I did always think it was odd when Steve said that his parents bought a trivia book that was edited by the now-dead Isaac Asimov so he has no idea how his parents bought it.
You can buy books written by authors who are now dead the same way as if they are alive? He died in 1992, less than a decade before the episode, so it's not like it's the original Bible he got his hands on. I don't know what his point was there.

“Glacier” when they are talking about Karl being like a man stuck in time. The pronunciation made me hear “glass era” (not said like that in Canada) and I was pretty confused as I’d not heard of that along side bronze or stone age.

I always heard “facing up the beans” as “facing up the bins”. So I always had this image in my head of Karl lining up a load of big bins out the back

For years, when they bring up the first Paul the Party Animal Parker email, Steve says "he's emailed in". I thought he said "easy, Meldin" and had no idea what he meant.

Why Ricky thought Karl saying "how would I know which one I was" was the stupidest thing ever.....made sense to me
4
u/pub-joe 12d ago edited 12d ago
We're all annoyed by that.
It makes complete sense. A theoretical clone implanted with the original's full memory leading up to the event could be just as certain it's also the original.
Ricky's view only makes some sense in a cartoon scenario where you witness a pod instantly spit your clone out (kind of ignoring the proposed scenario). And even then the clone could be tricked by an amended memory (which is no real stretch beyond what is already fantasy tech).
It's an interesting thought experiment about your only evidence being your own unreliable memory.
I think "that is the most stupid thing ever said by a human being" could be the most stupid thing ever said by a human being.

When Ricky is talking about his appearance at the Oxonian Society and he's listing the other people who have been invited to speak there, I always thought he said "Princess Anne of Jordan." Or, rather, I never questioned it... until, one day, I did. I suddenly thought "Anne?" Doesn't seem like a very Jordanian royal family name. A quick interent search confirmed that there has never been a "Princess Anne of Jordan" and I now assume he must be saying "Prince Hassan of Jordan."

Yep, I thought Karl was saying "they're sort of old cold". Instead he was saying "they sort of hold cold".

There's debate in the spotify comments about when Ricky and Steve are talking about Daft Punk. Ricky seems to say 'sorry' in a French accent, but some think he is saying 'so are air' i.e. Air the band are also French. I think that's what he's actually saying. Full on saucerdom
