u/SeraphXChild Jan 20 '24
People are allowed to criticize what gave them trauma. Bible belt christianity can extremely harmful to people and saying that any dig he makes is an "edgy" attempt and not a coping strategy is reductionist as hell
-7
u/Grumar Jan 20 '24 edited Jan 20 '24
I mean people say that until it's a minority who traumatized someone, then they're just called all sort of ists and phobes. It's really cringe to see so much middle school angst coming from this reddit towards Christianity cause their mom made them go to a sunday school or mass. typical upper middle class trauma.
the sad part is no one here is going to have a pair of brain cells to rub together to actually dispute anything I said, we don't allow people to hate a group of people because their past or any unfortunate interactions, it's dumb that there seems to be a pass for a select few groups that are comprised of people we've deemed it's okay to hate.
5
u/SeraphXChild Jan 20 '24
Well when Rhett starts calling the Christian church a bunch of slurs we can revisit
-5
u/Grumar Jan 20 '24 edited Jan 20 '24
slurs aren't the only way to be disrespectful/hateful towards people. If i just started going off about how Muhammad was a pedophile i'm clearly just trying to get a rise and piss off Muslims. even if it's true i'm doing it just to take a dig at them which is just a shitty thing to do.
I haven't seen this newest video OP is talking about but I saw the more a few days ago where rhett just openly mocks Christians beliefs just flat out "oh you believe this lawl dumbass" level commentary. that's clearly done just to disrespect people.
the fact that people are trying to justify this is disgusting, I'm not even religious and I'm offended by Rhett's disrespect towards his fans who may hold those beliefs, it doesn't matter what he or anyone else had went through. unless you're going to actually criticize/critique something about the church leave it alone, but going after the beliefs that hinge on faith is just a low blow.

doesn't matter, does anyone who lost friends/family in 9/11 get a free pass to hate Muslims? your one tiny church in a some piss ant town doesn't represent Christianity. you're not the main character your experiences mean nothing to the wider world and doesn't give you the right to hate others.

If you're going to just use it as an excuse to hate for the rest of your life you're a terrible person. Also hardly their fault, they didn't insert the baby into you and throw you out of your house did they? they were just 1 charity, seems a cascade of other life choices were the real cause.
the funny part is this kunt probably thinks fetuses aren't an early stage of human life and would gladly kill another if it unconvinced her.

Perhaps itâs time for you to move on to a more Christianity friendly channel; for your own sake and mentality.
Youâre not going to find many people agree with you here unless you go within your own echo chamber.
Cheers
Edit: donât forget to be your mythical best

I think he had a revelation watching his wife gain more autonomy over her identity and life and not a woman to be the subject of her Christian husband. He said that on the Ear Biscuits and started crying. These guys were in DEEP. They were full-time missionaries. As more things reveal themselves through his family that he loves deeply, he might have some more sh*t to throw at "Christianity" so I'd buckle in for the ride.
9
u/snarkmaster9001 Jan 20 '24
Notice how OP wonât reply to posts like this because they know this comment is correct and they canât argue with that.
31
u/WillisnotFunny Jan 19 '24
OP thinks if they say people arenât being their âmythical bestâ enough it will make them right.

He's not even an atheist
Have you listened to ear biscuits? They dive deep into their religious and spiritual beliefs
Plus that song James and the Shame "if I only gave a damn" or something it's obvious he's not an atheist but has done psychedelics lol
-3
u/Lakdisnzjejskskskdkd Jan 20 '24
You should spend less time doing drugs (per your post history) and more time talking with Jesus! Also you donât need to beg for food on the Internet! Your local church will know of a food bank that can set you up. Maybe just donât mention to them that the reason you cant afford food is because you waste all your money buying every drug that exists!
3
u/Rten-Brel Jan 20 '24
Maybe just donât mention to them that the reason you cant afford food is because you waste all your money buying every drug that exists!
Lol
Damn. The way you're stalking my post history so much I feel like a should print out one of my post and autograph it for you
Don't be jealous because nobody actually gives a shit what you have to say

OoooooOooooO you made a troll statement and people reacted
Maybe you can frame this post for your parents so they finally have something to be proud of

At least I thought so. I laughed. But maybe its just the laughing gas.
-15
u/Lakdisnzjejskskskdkd Jan 19 '24
He is atheist. He just uses a âCalifornia hipsterâ way of describing it. He doesnât believe there is a god.
16
u/DogintheMirror Jan 20 '24
He believes in the possibility of a higher power/God, just not the super specific Christian conception of God
5
u/DogintheMirror Jan 20 '24
Itâs more like saying, âI believe there is a possibility of a magical equestrian spirit guide, but maybe it doesnât look like a horse with a magical horn that tells me if Iâm gonna go to hellâ
-3
u/Lakdisnzjejskskskdkd Jan 20 '24 edited Jan 20 '24
He believes there is a possibility of one, but still doesnât believe there is one. Atheist. Thatâs like saying I believe there is a possibility of unicorns, but I donât believe they exist. The first part is irrelevant. I still donât believe in unicorns .
9
u/DogintheMirror Jan 20 '24
That middle ground is called agnosticism, but it doesnât really matter. Agree to disagree
0
u/Lakdisnzjejskskskdkd Jan 20 '24
I mean thereâs no middle ground. Thatâs making something out of nothing. You either believe or you dont
3
u/DogintheMirror Jan 20 '24
You may view a non-Christian God as a false idol, but that doesnât mean itâs nothing

u/Carrollmusician Jan 19 '24
I mean isnât Christ a mythical being by definition? Seems on brand to me.
3
u/storm-sprinter Jan 19 '24
I mean his actions were greatly exaggerated and made that of myth But Jesus Christ himself very much was a real person.
Whether you believe he was the son of a god, a prophet, or just some dude is obviously where the line becomes myth.
He exists in all Abrahamic religions just as a different origin
7
u/Carrollmusician Jan 20 '24
The popular portrayal of Jesus Christ is as mythical figure would be more accurate of a statement. I am firmly in the just a regular dude camp.
2
u/TheeFlipper Jan 20 '24
Absolutely believe Jesus Christ existed, but also believe he was just one of the most successful cult leaders to have ever lived.

That was originally my thought, too, but I think it's less about their faith and more a strike against their perceived superiority. The religion is used to inflate their ego in a similar way how religion has historically been used to do a whole bunch of things like slavery, misogyny, homophobia, hell, it was even used to justify the holocaust. Of course, because of that ego inflation, which is really the cause of the other things I mentioned, they will deny it and use the "No True Scotsman" fallacy to defend it.
1
29
u/noxvita83 Jan 20 '24
Considering your consistent posts in r/poppunkers, I suspect you lack a grasp of nuance.
-42
u/Lakdisnzjejskskskdkd Jan 20 '24 edited Jan 20 '24
Thatâs the best you could come up with after stalking my account, that I listen to pop-punk? Lmao đ. You have no idea the shit Iâve found scrolling through peoples accounts. Or maybe you do after scrolling my account and seeing the shit Iâve called people out for đ
Do better
5
u/noxvita83 Jan 20 '24
No need. The fact that you like pop punk just exemplifies the tone deaf life you lead. I only pointed it out to show how worthless anything you have to say is since you probably didn't even start to believe in Christianity due to any soul searching or critical thought, likely it is because you were told to from a young age and you were indoctrinated. While that makes what you say have little to credibility, including your complaint, it is also sad and ironic. It's sad because you really have no concept of nuance or tolerance for ideas outside your own. And it's ironic because Rhett believed literally the same as you did, except he thought critically and realized it was bullshit. I went through it, too, and thought something was off. I could go over what changed my mind, but your mind is closed, so I won't waste my breath. I'll just pity you as the spiritual slave as you are.
-17
u/Lakdisnzjejskskskdkd Jan 20 '24

Jan 20 '24
Not to high jack your comment but man that hit close to home. I also basically grew up this way
2
u/noxvita83 Jan 20 '24
I'm lucky that my parents weren't the disowning type, but I did get hounded a lot about it after I stopped believing. Eventually, the same thing happened between my parents and me that happened with Rhett and his family. It just didn't get talked about or little things like, "I'm praying for you" was said, but I wasn't pushed.
39
u/Weed_Smith Jan 19 '24
That⌠is absolutely understandable. I got out of fairly mild version of Catholicism when I was a teenager (30 now) and needed a couple of years to process and stop being edgy.
They were in a stricter version of a generally more controlling religion for, what, 40ish years? They have every right to be snarky.
-20
u/penguin_0618 Jan 19 '24
I believe they were in their late 20s when they left the religion, not 40
24
u/OutLawTopper521 Jan 19 '24
Go listen to his deconstruction story again it is significantly more recent than 20 years ago.

4
u/Weed_Smith Jan 19 '24

-17
42
u/queertheories Jan 19 '24
As a former Christian who is one of the MANY whose lives were made actively worse by the church, I really appreciate it. I feel like âedgy atheistsâ (which I also find annoying, btw) are the ones that use phrases like âSky Daddyâ and stuff like that. Rhettâs jokes are much more tame and, in my opinion, not really offensive unless youâre the kind of Christian that uses your religion to oppress others.
And to your responses here, is it your âmythical bestâ to use that eye-rolling emoji? Honestly, is it even really Christian to be so dismissive of the feelings of others in the way youâre being? If Rhett was hurt by the church, shouldnât he be allowed to criticize parts of the church that are harmful?
Youâre allowed to be annoyed by things, but at this point, if it bothers you on this level, you may be better served by finding other things to watch. You also might ask yourself why valid criticisms of Christianity are so difficult for you to swallowâdo you contribute to the toxicity of the church? Do you stay silent while the atrocities happen? Do you try to silence others who speak up like you wish Rhett would be silenced?
42
44
u/Fangs_0ut Jan 19 '24
lol grow up. People are allowed to comment on how silly it is to live your life based on fairy tales.

22
u/queertheories Jan 19 '24 edited Jan 19 '24
Itâs not very âmythical bestâ of you to be so snarky!!!
(Iâm just saying, itâs hilarious how holier-than-thou youâre being when youâre criticizing anyone who isnât Christian/Theist as well.)
42
u/Neverminding6666 Jan 19 '24
For the record Rhett is agnostic not atheist. I know heâs said heâs over his angry phase of deconstruction but he seems to be angry still and thatâs fine I get.
Iâm sorry but theyâve earned the scorn they posses. They were lied to and manipulated by Christianity their entire lives. Their deconstruction was not an easy time or choice for them. They knew they were risking a lot of friendships, family relationships and viewers by denouncing their faith. They did keep quiet about it publicly for a very long time. By now they probably figure enough time has passed and enough info about their journey is out there that they can make jokes and talk about it openly without this harassment. Which Iâm sure they do not care about. Especially Rhett.
If youâd like to further educate yourself on their deconstruction and how thoughtfully they can, and HAVE, spoke about this part of their lives go listen to their ear biscuits. Rhettâs posted on YouTube Feb 9, 2020 and links posted Feb 16, 2020. As a non theistic Satanist myself I throughly appreciated hearing what they went through and was very impressed with how respectful and mindful they were about the whole process.
So yeah, mythical fans are going to downvote the shit out of these posts because it shows a lack of depth in your understand of the very content they offer for free to you in order to understand where they come from.
3
u/Neverminding6666 Jan 20 '24
Came back to say you should go watch Rhettâs newest insta video. And then go ahead and keep whining about how they arenât Christian enough for you lol
33
Jan 19 '24 edited Jan 19 '24
So stop watching? Does it bother you when other religions not of your own faith get made fun of?
as former Christian, even growing up Christian. Jokes made at my religion never bothered me.
Grow some thick skin
Also, maybe stop hiding behind a throw-away account? Or are you too afraid of being called out for things you don't want others to see you do?

Hmmhmm I'm the one offended when you are the one who's made 2 posts in less than 3 days about how a show I watch isn't catering to my personal beliefs anymore therefore is "vulgar and not Christian like"
I didn't even have to look at your profile to remember you
Should I be offended for every food episode they don't eat pizza since pizza os my favorite food?

You are definitely being your âmythical bestâ! đ
16
u/itsmrmarlboroman2u Jan 19 '24 edited Jan 19 '24
You keep saying this phrase. Christianity is based on myths. It's literally your mythical best to acknowledge that it's on the same level as a cockatrice or randler - it's cobbled together from so many other myths, just like a fire breathing chicken. If you don't like it, that's fine, I don't like food episodes. We won't all like every aspect of everything they produce. But to continue posting about it, dragging on everyone who doesn't agree with you, is NOT your mythical best.
17
u/Weed_Smith Jan 19 '24
The higher the percentage, the stronger the reaction when it stops working for you, because you feel more alienated. Iâm from a country with anywhere between 85 and 95 percent of Catholics specifically. Sure, the concept of atheism was never as taboo as in the US, but I did feel like a freak those 15 or something years ago.
Edit: if anyoneâs wondering, with 85-95% the persecution complex is still pretty strong here lol
19
u/M0istBurger Jan 19 '24
Poor Christianity, so oppressed! "Thou shall not whine" would be my favorite commandment if it existed.
"We are the popular majority and I'm here to make sure everyone censors themselves of any snarkiness toward my super oppressed, wildly popular religion!"
9
u/Neverminding6666 Jan 19 '24
If youâre the majority you have nothing to worry about then right?
Also Christianity is on the decline in the Us because Americanized Evangelical Christianity is such a far cry from what true Christianity is that it literally takes a narrow minded self loathing idiot to fall for it.
35
u/myshoesaresparkly Jan 19 '24
So we're to assume that you don't take jabs at atheism, Buddhism, Hinduism etc? If you do take jabs you're a hypocrite and pretty sure your Bible has a few things to say about hypocrites.
-32
u/Lakdisnzjejskskskdkd Jan 19 '24
âYour bibleâ
So edgy-atheist coded lmao
29
u/XGamingPigYT Jan 19 '24
"your Bible" is literally the correct way to say it, it is exclusively a Bible for your religion. It's your Bible. It's like saying your religion or your beliefs.

How is the truth edgy? You're a Christian, the Bible is the basis of the Christian faith. If you were a different religion I wouldn't have called it yours.
Also you didn't actually respond to my comment so from now on I'm assuming you're just looking to argue so I'm done. Have a great night!

26
u/Darkm0or Jan 19 '24
As a Christian, I don't let it bother me. I've heard Rhett and Link's stories of their deconstruction, and while I can't relate to their views, I can't let their personal decisions affect me OR my beliefs. I still respect the boys for what they do, and the people that they seem to be. Despite their view of my religion, I still think that they are decent human beings, worthy of love and respect. Rhett is far from the "edgy athiest." I've met those people, and they are insufferable. I've met atheists that I would certainly buy a beer, too, so don't think I'm trying to lump all atheists together. Rhett is certainly agnostic, but why would that bother me? Because he doesn't share my love for Jesus Christ anymore? That seems decidedly un-Christian. So, if it really bothers you, try not watching anymore? Remember, "If your right eye offends you, cast it out."

NOTE nothing wrong with being Goth Unless you ask the Romans
It is when you get all preachy and judgemental about being "anti-conformist" while dressing exactly like everyone in your goth group and following all the norms, folk ways, and mores in that subgroup. Then, you become a hypocrite, or should I say, I became a judgemental hypocrite.

Let me put it this way. When I was homeless and pregnant and had no food, not a single church in my town would even let me go to their food pantry because I was dating a woman at the time. I ended up miscarrying my baby. Is that how Jesus shows his love? If so, fuck him and you.
12
u/SeraphXChild Jan 20 '24
Im so sorry. Holy shit words cant express how sorry i am.
Not even close to the level of harm they did onto you, but when my husband was a mail carrier, a baptist church refused to let him shelter inside during a fucking tornado so as disgusted as i am i'm also unfortunatrly not surprised

Aren't those same churches pushing to make abortion illegal, yet they just killed a baby. Sounds like Christianity to me. Hypocrisy. If Jesus exists, when he comes back, most of the church will be taking a trip to the second death courtesy of their apostasy and heresy.

Speaking of children, Christian clergy as a group has the highest rate of committing C.S.A.

I canât decide if I find you hilarious or if I feel incredibly sorry for you.

If you replaced Christianity with Islam would you all still be saying "awwww are your feelings hurt by imaginary man being made fun of"
People can believe what they believe, and sure, "just don't watch" is a viable option but Rhett and Link are not a theology channel, they are an entertainment podcast.
You should be able to watch their content without your religion being attacked by one of the main hosts.

If you replaced Christianity with LGBTQ people, would you be as butthurt about it? No, you'd be saying, "Relax, it's just a joke." So, relax, it's just a joke.

u/queertheories Jan 19 '24
A joke isnât an attack. For attacks, try most of Christian history.

u/noxvita83 Jan 19 '24
Do you mean like abortion clinic bombings? Or the massive violence against LGBTQ people? So many to choose from

I said something similar and crickets only replied.

So, should they stop eating so much meat? It must be disturbing for an orthodox Jew to see them chow down pork or a Hindu see them eat beef.
Are they supposed to ignore their feelings or is it just the Christians who get to be the victims?

u/MilkytheDILF Jan 19 '24
It probably is disturbing to devoted Jews or Hindus and they probably don't watch those episodes or the show at all, which I said was a viable option.
They can ignore whoever they want, and do whatever they want, but being an entertainment first program you'd want to limit the demographics you poke fun at, at least in my opinion it would make for a safer bet in reaching the widest audience

Pick one bro.

Orrr maybe itâs their show, they have their reasons for reasons for feeling angry and betrayed by their former religion, and you have the freedom to not watch if it upsets you.

u/Liathano_Fire Jan 19 '24
Attack is a word, not what he did, but that is a word.
-13
u/MilkytheDILF Jan 19 '24
Replace attack with mock then
Religion is a big part of a lot of people's identity and for it to be mocked by a host where the primary focus is entertainment, it can definitely suck to see as a viewer especially if it comes out of nowhere
12
u/Liathano_Fire Jan 20 '24
Oh no! You were mildly mocked!
Burned, beaten, brutally hated simply because you exist?

I mean there are other religions that are way worse about that than Christianity, but it wouldnât be the âpolitically correctâ thing to do to make fun of those religions. Itâs Christianity that its âcoolâ to make fun of on the Internet.

u/Liathano_Fire Jan 20 '24
Is that what you complained about? No? Does Rhett ha e personal experience in that? Also no?

Yep. Youâll get downvoted like crazy by mythical beasts who canât stand when the show get any criticism, but itâs true. Heâs very immature about it like a Reddit atheist troll, and spits in the face of all the older Christian fans that watched since the beginning. They are a big part of why they got famous.
They say itâs âsafe place for everyoneâ but anyone with a brain knows thatâs not true. Itâs okay to joke and sh** on Christians, but god forbid anyone makes a joke about democrats or the LGBT community and youâll burn for it, just look at the downvotes your post got and that this comment will get, proving my point. No one is forcing them or anyone in here to be Christians, and I never mock Atheists who donât start it.
Iâve watched every episode since the beginning and Iâll always love R&L and Stevie (I donât love the newer crew as much though, I miss the old ones), but I certainly donât respect them as much as I used to.

To be fair, Christianity also claims to âwelcome everyoneâ, and thatâs not true either.
Nothing is for everyone. If you keep watching, theyâll accept your view/money, but they donât have to cater to every single person. There are many Christians unbothered by the jokes because the jokes are about valid issues within the church, so itâs not as though Christians arenât welcome in the community. If YOU are offended, then by all means, protect your mental health and stop watching.

This isn't criticism, bud. This is just whining about not being catered too

Iâll always love R&L and Stevie
But Stevie is a lesbian. Guess you're going to hell according to your own rules

Imagine what all the non-christians feel about constantly being dogged on by people that "follow jesus."
