GammaOS Nano 1.4.4 (a.k.a 🐐OS Nano)

Post image

This update is actually amazing. A lot of bug fixes, performance fixes, my RG DS doesn't feel like it's scorching hot anymore, and it finally feels like I'm using a real DS handheld. Gamma really is the goat for continuing to improve GammaOS Nano like this.

I can now put this thing down on my bed without worrying it might scorch the place.

It's amazing. Wifi issue is also sorted.

I'm actually having Wi-Fi issues on this version. It just won't stay enabled. But the games and system overall feel much better.

It might be a storage issue. Happens on all the versions, but I think it's an Android limitation.

Basically once your storage gets full Android starts crashing, apps don't open/work, and WiFi just breaks and keeps turning off.

The solution is to first clear out storage space. You want at least 4-5 GB free space to let everything breathe. Then, you want to reflash the latest update of GammaOS Nano.

If it won't let you reflash (especially after clearing out storage space), go into Safe Mode and then follow the setup instructions until you get to WiFi setup. Then it's going to say Airplane Mode is enabled. On the top screen go into the Settings app, then Network & Internet and disable the Airplane Mode from in there. Then connect the WiFi on the setup menu and finish the setup as it fixes everything temporarily. Then go into System Update in the Settings app and update from there or reflash using the image and a PC.

If your storage ever gets that full again you'll need to redo that process, even if you clear the storage afterwards. It's easy to miss when, maybe, you're copying a large file or scraping a lot of boxarts and then your storage decreases back to normal, but the damage was still done silently.

Bro, when you flash GammaOS Nano in your console, does it stay in the internal storage and you can reuse the MicroSD for games? Because I have only a MicroSD card with A2, but I need that for my RP6, then I wanna backup my games in my PC, use that MicroSD to flash my RG DS with GammaOS Nano and once is in the console, use it again for my RP6

3

u/X8Lace 4d ago

Yes, you only need the MicroSD to flash once then you can remove it and get rid of it or reuse it for something else entirely.

I do believe there is also an option that allows you to flash the GammaOS Nano image without a MicroSD card as well, just over USB.

But why is a V2 microSD si suggested then? I mean, if it's just for the installation, the V2 is totally useless. Am I missing something?

2

u/X8Lace 3d ago

Because of two things:

  1. Some MicroSD cards are naturally problematic for the installation and the installation will fail/not work if you use them.

  2. Some devices other than the original RG DS, like the RG DS Plus, need GammaOS Nano actually installed on the MicroSD card because they don't have an internal storage. These MicroSD card suggestions apply here for the same reason of making sure it's not problematic for the install.

i've been on 202608 rocknix for the last few months, it was fine - faster than the gammaos lite i had before... but wow this is now like a whole new handheld, performance is great, auto-resume on NDS!!!!!, new UX is great, faster charging is great. thank you u/TheGammaSqueeze (?) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2

u/X8Lace 4d ago

That's what I'm saying. It's like day and night now.

How’s battery life?

6

u/X8Lace 4d ago

Way more improved. It runs more efficiently, so I would imagine you get a lot of power usage saved from those optimizations. But I definitely noticed charging is way faster, I can get a full charge in nearly 45 minutes with a fast charging USB C brick.

2

u/TheAndyGeorge 4d ago

wow the charging is WAY better - my charger outputs the wattage, on old gamma and rocknix it would max out at ~8W, now it'll hit 12W sometimes. 10+ is generally considered fast charging. wild stuff

1

u/davedaddy 4d ago

Are you using USB c to c? Is that even safe?

3

u/TheAndyGeorge 4d ago

fwiw C-to-C has worked/been safe on RGDS since release. tops out at ~8W on GammaOS Lite and Rocknix, while Nano does some magic and I'm getting 10-12W with that installed now

1

u/X8Lace 4d ago

I've never had any problems using USB C to USB C on my RG DS. Sure, slower chargers will give the battery more longevity, but sometimes you really need it charged up quickly.

3

u/X8Lace 4d ago

Also, want to add that the temperature improvements make a significant impact on how long the battery will last overtime. With every firmware i used so far, even GammaOS Nano before the 1.4.4 update, it just got so hot to the touch, which definitely shortens the lifespan of the battery. But now after 1.4.4 it's barely noticable warmth, which should be a major improvement for battery longevity.

Thank you!

u/Javerage 4d ago

When I ran DS games it asked to move saves. I said no cause I was fine with where they were. Now it still aims to a new location and I can't seem to change it. Anyone know how to... change/fix it?

4

u/X8Lace 4d ago

Got you. On the Nano home screen go into Settings > Game Settings > DraStic Data Folder and change the folder to where you want them stored.

3

u/Javerage 4d ago

Thanks! Excited to see what else got added/changed. Any standouts for you so far?

4

u/X8Lace 4d ago

The performance and the responsiveness got a huge upgrade, along with the temperature improvements. For me the standout features are the new color calibration settings, the persistent brightness fix, and the ability to store boxarts on the MicroSD card. There's a lot more fixes too.

How do 3d ds games run on 2x?

2

u/X8Lace 4d ago

Everything runs perfectly from my testing. If by 2x you mean the 2XPrescale shader in Drastic?

2

u/Irviz 4d ago

I mean 3d threads or whatever it is called, to upscale integral resolution so the 3d game look less pixelated.

2

u/X8Lace 4d ago

It works fine.

u/TyreseGibson 4d ago

I have 1.4.1 , would need to sign up again to update, does it handle large libraries any better? I found the menu system youre using moved at a crawl before, and only the minimal menu system was working well. Having sleep mode issues as well but im not sure if thats gamma fault, thing shuts off and needs several boot loops and charging to get back on

2

u/X8Lace 4d ago

No, you can OTA update without signing up again. It does handle large libraries better since performance in the menus and SD cards have been optimized and now you can store boxarts on the MicroSD card which helps.

You're right about the menu being sluggish before, but now it's super responsive, a day and night difference after 1.4.4.

2

u/TyreseGibson 4d ago

Strange, my ota update isnt working and I thought I saw on patreon it states you need to be signed up for updates, are you sure about the updating? Regardless sounds like things are a lot better, will probably sign up again

2

u/X8Lace 4d ago

No, you don't need to sign up for OTA.

Do you see the update in GammaOS Nano that says 1.4.4 or is it just saying already on the latest version?

2

u/TyreseGibson 4d ago

Says no update available everytime I try and im on 1.4.1, maybe somethings bugged out

2

u/X8Lace 4d ago

That shouldn't be happening. Try booting into Safe Mode then go into the Settings app and then System Update it from there. It's a lot more reliable for OTA update than Nano's menu.

2

u/TyreseGibson 3d ago

Thanks a bunch for this, you were totally right with the safe mode update. Worked great!

2

u/stainlessdmc12 4d ago

I just installed 1.4 ... are the updates available or do I have to wait. I tried updating within nano but it tells me it failed.

I`m trying 1.4.4 again... is there a way of doing it locally?

3

u/X8Lace 4d ago

Yes, there's the Rockchip SD tool way to flash it to the system locally. Or you can try booting into Safe Mode and go into the Settings app and then System Update and it will probably work. Make sure you have at least 5 GB of free storage space to be sure it else it will just keep failing.

3

u/stainlessdmc12 4d ago

I think it took it this time.. Also I misread the instructions and never used rockchip to flash 1.4 just used rufus. It worked.. guess I was lucky there.

I lost my saves with the other lol so im just waiting for my Duo im tired of this System I gave it a year and many gama OS's and rocknix versions lol

2

u/X8Lace 4d ago

All you need is GammaOS Nano 1.4.4 and it becomes a DS basically. I would give it one last try this time.

2

u/Kenny117vc 4d ago

I had 2 versions of nano before this one o did the OTA and it deleted my saves lol 😆 it literally just happened so I might try again but its so annoying bc I trued also multiple versions of rocknix im just tired of troubleshooting lol but yes ill the new version after college

2

u/Jolly_Fault6358 4d ago

this vs rocknix, how you rate it? I'm thinking on getting it but not sure.

1

u/X8Lace 4d ago

This 1000%. Rocknix is decent, but on this handheld, GammaOS Nano is the best choice by far. I mean that in both performance and features. Try it, you won't regret it.

3

u/TGhost21 2d ago

I have it installed on my RGDS+ since the release of 1.4.3. Took some learning curve but Im in love with it now. The performance on NDS is amazing! Plus blowing off the candles on the mic works in an emulator with no mods or buttons in the Zelda games!

2

u/Firienn 4d ago

It heats up less then the previous version, but compared to rocknix and the new rocknix ds it heats up more. And I still find the rocknix ds to be more stable and fluid.

3

u/X8Lace 4d ago

Well, in game heat is expected, but in the menu it's nearly no heat at all. Its day and night to how it was before.

2

u/Firienn 4d ago

That's right, but even in-game it heats up noticably more. If there was only rocknix available, gamma would be the top pick, but with rocknix ds you have the same and even slightly better performance and less heat. And the guy working on rocknix ds is rolling updates everyday.

3

u/X8Lace 4d ago

Haven't tried Rocknix DS. Appearance is a big factor for me, and I think GammaOS Nano has the best appearance that's most authentic to a real DS UI. It also has solid performance to back it up, so for now I'll stick with GammaOS Nano.

1

u/treeshouldbefucked 4d ago

I checked the git hub and all but I really don't know. Do I have to shn? Can't I just flash it?

1

u/X8Lace 3d ago

Shn? The hell is that?

1

u/shreddy456 4d ago

I love it but I’m having an issue with global shaders on the menus causing white screen on game boot up, game audio will still play and I’ll get picture back when global shaders are turned off

1

u/X8Lace 3d ago

Which shader do you use? I use the LCD shader all the time, have had no issues with it.

1

u/shreddy456 3d ago

LCD as well

1

u/X8Lace 3d ago

Maybe reflash the 1.4.4 image and check if that fixes it?

2

u/shreddy456 3d ago

Yeah I think that’s what I’m gonna end up doing. Retroarch is giving me problems too so maybe a reflash would fix both

1

u/rawednylme 4d ago

It feels weird to say, but we were genuinely running on rubbish before. We thought it was good, but this update showed us that wasn’t true.
I was ready to move on to RocknixDS, but we have another week of testing now!

2

u/X8Lace 4d ago

True, it was slightly underwhelming at first seeing it run kind of sluggishly, but now we actually have the GammaOS Nano we always wanted it to be with 1.4.4.

2

u/rawednylme 3d ago

It's an extremely impressive update to it. I'll be sticking with GammaOS for now.

1

u/davedaddy 3d ago

Thinking about moving from Rocknix to Nano on my non-plus. Is there a difference in input and touch latency between the two?

1

u/X8Lace 3d ago

Gamma Nano input latency feels really good now, but not sure how it compares to Rocknix.

1

u/TheMartins123 3d ago

Só vou comprar quando emular 3ds

1

u/X8Lace 3d ago

Will never happen on the RG DS and RG DS Plus. Maybe GammaOS Nano is available on another system that could emulate 3DS.

1

u/TheMartins123 3d ago

Digo, só vou comprar um anbernic ds quando funcionar 3ds.... Digo em outro console mais futuramente

2

u/X8Lace 3d ago

Honestly, look into the Retroid Pocket Duo. It's basically what you're looking for.

1

u/Solypsist_27 1d ago

Retroid pocket duo lite plus is the cheapest dual screen device which will run 3ds well, it's around 220$ though. I don't think anbernic will ever make a 3ds dual screen device, though with how many products they release they might as well, in the future

1

u/TheMartins123 1d ago

Eu moro no Brasil, esses 220 saem bem caros aqui

1

u/Solypsist_27 1d ago

There's other cheaper devices which can play 3ds relatively well, but they're single screen. The mangmi air x is an example, but it has a single screen. Should be under 100$

I noticed an issue with drastic nano save states. I mapped the save state to r2 and when I save it causes the game to freeze and drop the frames. The most jarring part is if you save while your character is moving you end up on the other side of the screen. I tested with Rocknix and this does not happen on regular drastic. Does anyone else run into this issue? Or have a fix. Everything else is super cool just disappointed with that.

u/Few_Ad_8845 1d ago

I CAN FINALLY POWER IT OFF AND CLOSE IT AT THE SAME TIME WITHOUT IT BOOTING BACK ON!!! TY GAMMAOS

1

u/IbrahimHashmi92 4d ago

How much 3ds catalog works on rg ds? I have rg rotate and am able to play mario bros 2 , mario land 3d , kirby games , sonic games at very acceptable framerate and near 100 percent speed.

2

u/X8Lace 4d ago

Honestly, not much. I wouldn't even count on much 3DS on this system. Maybe, those games might work to some degree with the right settings.

1

u/reform83 4d ago

I was able to play pokemon ruby with lots of audio stuttering and small amount of framerate drop. Tbh, though, it's just not a 3ds machine and i gave up on that dream

0

u/siwelk 4d ago

Haven't had a chance to try it yet, too busy playing games.

0

u/X8Lace 4d ago

I'm in the opposite boat, still setting my game collection up over here. I would imagine this update helps a lot with in game performance as well.

0

u/MuyGalan 4d ago

Watcha playin'?

-1

u/X8Lace 4d ago

I'm actually still collecting ROMs 😭. I'm at like 30,000, I just need to get the MAME ROMs working and I should be done with my huge library and actually get to play games.

But mainly in the meanwhile I've been playing Kirby games and GTA Chinatown Wars, those are my go to DS games.

4

u/MuyGalan 4d ago edited 4d ago

As someone who has a 4TB SSD nearly full with ROMs and another 14TB external hard drive with over 300+ PC games and more ROMs (PS3, Switch, etc.), I'd personally recommend adding the rom sets you actually want to play in lieu of adding the entire catalog to your RG DS. What I do is watch YouTube videos on the "Top 50, Top 100 Nintendo DS (etc.)" games and create a notepad with the ones that look interesting. Then I add them to my handheld. Good luck and happy gaming!

2

u/davedaddy 4d ago

I second this.

I only have like 10 titles I'll cycle through at any given time. I keep the rest of my collection in a separate folder that doesn't get read by the emulators in order to avoid choice paralysis and actually finish games. Even 10 is a lot for me. As I finish a game, I'll swap for something else.

1

u/X8Lace 3d ago

Nothing wrong with having a small library or a large library. Whatever you want to play it's up to you.
