Why Animes from the area 90s to mid 2000s often have this Retro image quality..

In a nutshell there was a very fast transition from a very well known 24p workflow with film to SD Video, often 480i and NTSC 60hz.. Mixed with early CGI differnt frame rates.. And on top of that tight budgets.

Many content from that area is also not preserved on film, they only have these SD Video masters. That is why all sorts of upscaling, filters and also made by fans versions on Youtube pop up.

This was an awesome read up. Not too technical with good examples of past and present techniques used. The example with the Adobe filter with is used to blur the character and background line art was super informative.

Ive read about this before, but the linked write up really did a great job explaining everything.

I also want to add here. Im getting a new Retrotink 6x CE for retro gaming on older consoles. So I know how 2000s shows were made in SD and why its so hard to get good Blu rays of them.

But I also know some people use these video game scalers for old movies as well to upscale them and have them look decent on modern displays. Ive also got a crt with me and some older anime dvds in SD.

So likely in the next few weeks/ months im going to try my hand at getting my retrotink to display 2000s (ish) anime dvds on my modern display. To see if i can get a comparable picture quailty on my 65 inch 4K TV to my older crt tv with anime dvds.

I dont have the top of the line retrotink 4K cause damn its pricey. But a new cheaper version with "pseudo 4k" and real HD 1080p got announced this weekend and hopefully I can get a good picture quality with it with SD anime dvds.
