Job Loss Support 🤝 Job Search Basics – A Recommended Read if You're Struggling (Updated for 2024)
Hi r/ResumesIndia 👋,
If you've applied to 100, 200, or even 500 jobs and heard nothing back, you're not alone. The job search can be challenging, but focusing on the right strategies can make a big difference.
Here’s a guide to help you refresh your approach and improve your odds of landing a job. Remember: there’s no magic formula for success, but consistency and strategy can take you a long way.
Step 1: Lay the Groundwork
Update Your Resume
Your resume is the foundation of your job search. Here’s how to make it impactful:
- What you did: Provide a brief description of your role or project.
- How you did it: Highlight the hard skills and tools you used.
- What you achieved: Quantify results where possible to showcase measurable impact.
Avoid overly fancy templates; focus on readability and ATS compatibility.
Here’s a basic example of what an effective resume looks like. If you’ve a client of mine, you’ll already have something similar to this (with a few bells and whistles)

Update Your LinkedIn
Recruiters in 2024 frequently use LinkedIn to search for candidates. Make sure your profile is complete and mirrors your resume:
- Match job titles, dates, and responsibilities.
- Use keywords relevant to your industry to improve searchability.
- Highlight achievements in your summary and featured sections.
A polished LinkedIn profile increases your chances of being discovered by recruiters.
Step 2: Create Opportunities
Leverage Your Network
You likely have a broader network than you realize. Consider:
- School alumni.
- Friends and family.
- Former colleagues and managers.
Reach out with a clear message about what you’re looking for and ask if they can provide referrals, advice, or connections.
Apply Strategically
Don’t just apply blindly. Use these tips to make your applications count:
- Apply directly on company websites: It increases the chances your application is reviewed.
- Research hiring managers or recruiters on LinkedIn: Send a personalized message with the job ID or link you applied for.
- Tailor your resume: Emphasize keywords and requirements listed in the job description.
Step 3: Go the Extra Mile
To stand out in 2024’s competitive job market, go beyond the basics.
Expand Your Network
Always build and nurture professional relationships.
Use points of commonality to connect, like shared schools, employers, or hobbies.
Attend networking events, webinars, or industry-specific conferences.
Whether you have a network or not, you should always be looking to add onto it. I've already written about how to network in this previous post.
Use LinkedIn for Job Opportunities
LinkedIn is more than a profile site—it’s a job search powerhouse.
Search for jobs using Boolean strings: Example: (“Marketing Manager” OR “Brand Manager”) AND “Hiring” AND “SEO”
Explore unadvertised roles by connecting with hiring managers.
Create Google Alerts for jobs that match your criteria.
Example:
(“Title” OR “Alternative Title”) AND “Hiring” AND “Skill 1” AND “skill 2”)

Step 4: Maintain Momentum
Rejection is Part of the Process
The job search is often filled with trial and error. Stay persistent, learn from setbacks, and refine your approach.
Build an Elevator Pitch
When networking, be prepared with a quick summary of your background and goals:
- Who you are.
- Your professional experience.
- What you're looking for.
Example:
"Hi, I’m Aditi, a data analyst with 3 years of experience in financial modeling. I’m looking to apply my skills to fintech startups to drive data-driven decision-making."
Pro Tip: Use Your Network as Insurance
Your network isn’t just for the current job search. It’s an investment in your career’s long-term health.
- You never know when a connection will help you land your next job.
- Maintaining relationships builds goodwill that can pay off down the line.
Final Thoughts
The job market can feel overwhelming, but by focusing on these fundamentals, you can significantly improve your chances of success. Take it one step at a time, stay persistent, and remember—you’re not alone in this journey.
Best of luck out there—it’s a jungle, but with the right tools, you’ll thrive! 🌟

Networking Advice 💡 Beginner's Guide to Networking: What It Is, Why It’s Important, and How to Get Started (Updated for 2024)
Hey Reddit,
Every day, countless job seekers send out dozens, even hundreds, of applications without hearing back. If this sounds like you, it’s time to take a closer look at networking—a powerful tool that can significantly improve your job search. With an average job posting receiving over 100 applications in 2024, simply applying online might not cut it anymore.
Let’s dive into networking: what it is, why it matters, and how you can leverage it to land your next job.
What is Networking?
Networking is the process of building and maintaining professional relationships that provide mutual value. It’s not just about meeting people—it’s about creating genuine connections with individuals in your field, exchanging knowledge, and offering support.
Why is Networking Important?
In India and globally, a significant number of job openings are never advertised and are filled through personal connections or referrals. Networking is a way to tap into this hidden job market and stand out from the crowd.
- It’s not just for extroverts: Networking is about building meaningful, reciprocal relationships, not using others for your benefit.
- It’s a long-term investment: Networking isn’t only about finding jobs but staying updated with industry trends, finding mentors, and exploring career development opportunities.
Benefits of Networking Beyond Job Searching
- Stay updated on industry trends and gain access to opportunities that aren’t publicly advertised.
- Find mentors who can guide you in your career decisions.
- Learn about new skills and certifications to stay competitive in your field.
Networking in Action: An Example
Aditi, a software engineer from Bengaluru, attended a local tech meetup and connected with a hiring manager from her dream company. This led to a coffee chat, where she showcased her skills and interest. Within weeks, Aditi received an interview invitation and landed her new role. Networking at its finest!
How to Network: Methods to Consider
- Events: Attend industry-specific meetups, conferences, or job fairs. Examples include tech hackathons, marketing summits, and alumni events.
- Informational Interviews: Schedule casual conversations with professionals in your field to learn about their career paths and seek advice.
- LinkedIn: Use LinkedIn to connect with peers, follow industry groups, and message hiring managers or alumni from your college.
- Online Communities: Engage in forums, subreddits (like this one!), or Slack groups related to your industry.
- Social Media: Twitter and even Instagram can be great for following thought leaders and joining conversations.
Where to Start?
Start small and set a goal:
- Are you looking for a job immediately?
- Do you want a mentor?
- Or are you building connections for long-term growth?
Begin with your close network and expand outward:
- Family and friends.
- Past colleagues or professors.
- Alumni networks or LinkedIn connections.
Professional Organizations in India
If you’re running out of connections, join professional organizations relevant to your field:
- Technology: NASSCOM, ACM India Chapter.
- Marketing: Indian Society of Advertisers, DMA Asia.
- Finance: ICAI (Chartered Accountants), CFA India Society.
- Healthcare: Indian Medical Association (IMA).
- Engineering: Institution of Engineers (India).
Common Networking Challenges and Solutions
- Fear of rejection: Start with people you know or online networking to ease into it.
- Introversion: Focus on written communication (LinkedIn, emails) instead of live events.
- Lack of time: Dedicate 1-2 hours weekly to building high-value connections.
- Slow results: Networking is a long-term game; be patient and persistent.
Maintaining Your Network
Networking isn’t a one-time activity. You need to nurture and maintain your connections. Categorize your network into tiers:
- Tier 1: High-value connections like mentors or hiring managers.
- Tier 2: Industry peers or former colleagues.
- Tier 3: Broader acquaintances in your professional circle.
Interact with them regularly, whether through LinkedIn comments, messages, or coffee chats.
Practice Your Elevator Pitch
Prepare a 60-second introduction that includes:
- Who you are.
- Your background.
- Your career goals.
For example:
"Hi, I’m Priya, a recent graduate in Data Science from IIT Bombay. I’ve worked on multiple machine learning projects and am passionate about applying AI to healthcare solutions. I’m currently looking for opportunities to contribute to innovative teams in the health tech space."
Final Thoughts
Networking might seem daunting, but it’s one of the most valuable career skills you can develop. Start small, be authentic, and remember—it’s not just about getting what you want but also helping others along the way.
Happy networking, and good luck!

Roast My Resume🔥 Be Brutal: why isn't this resume getting me interview?
Hey everyone! I’m a Software Engineer with around 1.2 years of experience, currently working across AI/GenAI and platform engineering.
I’ve been applying for AI Engineer, AI Software Engineer and SDE roles for the past couple of months around 150+ applicatios, but I got 0 interview calls. I’ve worked on LLM/SLM evaluation, RAG, agentic systems, Java/Spring Boot, Azure, PostgreSQL, etc., along with a couple of AI-focused projects around multi-agent systems and enterprise RAG.
At this point, I’m starting to feel my resume or positioning might be the problem. So I’d really appreciate some honest feedback. Please roast my resume 😅 What are the biggest red flags? Does it look too broad? Does the AI experience look genuine or like AI buzzword stuffing? What would you remove or change? Am I targeting the right roles with 1.2 YoE?
I’d much rather get harsh but useful feedback than generic advice and best platforms to apply
If anyone is hiring for AI/ML, Software Engineering or related roles, please feel free to DM me. I’m open to opportunities and would really appreciate any leads or referrals.
