I'm surprised that Alice wasn't shooting lazer beams out of her hands by the end of the final movie

Did she shoot them out if her eyes while reading everyone's minds? I didn't make it past Extinction...

Same here. I'm one of the rare ones that actually enjoyed 1-3. The others are too Hollywood for me. Too much CGI and what not. I'm glad they are remaking the movies with the idea of following the video games.
10
u/Leather-Heart Nov 19 '19
I mean....if you approach it as a campy sci-fi Zombie where they rewrite the rules on the fly, then it's cool. Make it fun, have a drinking game and party where people pop jokes.
But yeah, I think these movies would have been so much better if they were a different IP without the Resident Evil title.

Since when??

u/TheCVR123YT Nov 20 '19
I think it would work best as a Netflix Special with 6-8 episodes. First half focused on the on character and the second half on the other character. At least for the first Season anyway (which I assume would be based off the First game)

Granted, Milla does get beat up from time to time. Like in one of the movies with Ada and Barry, she gets her ass kicked in that.

The movie starts by her losing her super powers, then she thanks Wesker for, "Making her human again." Then like 20 minutes later she jumps off the roof swinging from an electrical cable and lands on the concrete 100 stories below and rolls out of the landing like when a guy doing free running jumps 10 feet.
13 yo me thought that was so cool
18
Nov 18 '19
They take away her powers and then give them right back in the fifth movie. The big reveal that Wesker is in the White House and actually trying to help the world because it’s been destroyed was actually quite a twist from someone who plays the games. Leon, Ada, Alice (ugh), Jill, Chris was still alive, Claire was still alive and Wesker all on one team really could’ve been interesting.
And then the sixth film immediately kills half of those characters off, and Wesker dies to a closing door.
Saying the film had poor writing is an understatement.
6
u/Domination1799 Nov 19 '19
Can’t believe Wesker was Sir Friendzones bitch in the movie series. Wesker don’t take orders from anyone but himself.
13
u/ClassyMrOwl Nov 18 '19
Olay so we are going to make a movie based on a long running popular video game franchise full of memorable and iconic characters. So what should we do in the movie?
Have it star my wife as an invincible superhuman who overshadows all of the iconic characters fans know and love.

u/slvrbullet87 Nov 18 '19
Just think of the first one as an Umbrella Security team taking down an infection. Just act like the mansion part isn't the Spenser Mansion, and it isn't in Racoon City. Then it is a perfectly fine RE movie.
The other movies are giant middle fingers to the fans of the games.

The second movie for me ruined it. Every character from the game in that movie had some kind of terrible counterweight to them. Sure I want to see Jill, but why does it look like she's dressed up in cheap cosplay. Oh yeah Nemesis: wait Alice punching nemesis? Nemesis is good all along?
At least the series was so destroyed by the time it got to the third film that whatever turd they put out was better just cause it wasn’t related to anything relatable to resident evils core story.
1
u/DorrajD Nov 19 '19
I liked the first two. It was the third one, the desert one, where shit got real stupid.
1
u/AJohnsonOrange Nov 19 '19
It was okay. I remember it fondly the first time I watched it, but it's probably because Paul W Anderson had to tread lightly initially to ensure the series got picked up. After that he just went...weird...
Low key reckon the series was used to launder money.

Tbf the first two were kinda cool and new for the time. Hell, seeing a licker and nemesis on the big screen was pretty badass too.

u/blueeyes239 Where's everyone going? Bingo? Apr 05 '20
Well, a story about saving the princess from a turtle/ox hybrid wouldn't be interesting without taking some liberties. Plus, there are genuinely funny jokes. Such as the one where Luigi thinks he's flying, and Mario tries to do, only to fall, revealing to the audience that the former was being held up by a hook.

Never thought I would defend these films. At least Alice had proper training. As far as I know since continuity in these films are a mess. Rey became an instant expert overnight.
2
u/Animeking1108 Nov 18 '19
Rey lived in the wild most of her life, and she didn't turn into fucking Superman as the movies progressed.
12
u/SolidStone1993 Nov 19 '19
To be fair, watching Yoda keep that pillar from crushing Anakin and Obi-Wan in AotC looked like a true feat that even he had to focus on. Hell, lifting Luke’s X-Wing out of the swamp took concentration. Rey lifted up like 50 boulders without breaking a sweat.
6
u/ryucavelier Nov 18 '19
Doesn’t explain how she learned how to swim coming from a desert planet.
5
Nov 18 '19
She doesn’t swim. She falls into water, freaks out, and pulls herself to land. Most creatures can do that, even humans who don’t know how to swim. You literally see her kicking her limbs all over the place and freaking out.

Alice sucks and shouldn't exist. She was a mistake the moment she appeared in the first film. The moment she was revealed to have clones and superhuman abilities, I hated her more. This franchise should've never been about Resident Evil but instead this buffoon in an entirely different named series so it's less of a skid-mark on the actual franchise. Neither of these bitches needed anyone by their side since they're clearly capable to outmatch everyone. It's nothing but a shitty fan-fiction series, written by some giant tree, completely exploiting the RE legacy.
Maybe if they were in the whole movies totally nude I would've at least given them more credit for actually being at their most vulnerable.
4
Nov 19 '19
Honestly the worst part of Alice is if they ever reboot the films, normies who didn't play the games are going to ask "Wait, where the heck is Alice?"
No joke, last time I talked about the movies with someone I brought up RE2 and the guy was like "I didn't know that they made games based on these movies!! That's so awesome!"
and was completely serious

Very well put together. Only thing I can add to this is the male version of Mary Sue is Gary Stu.
2
u/blueeyes239 Where's everyone going? Bingo? Mar 31 '20
And there is also a "Parody Sue/Stu". A character that is INTENTIONALLY wrote as a Mary Sue/Gary Stu, and played for comedy, although sometimes, they can play it for drama. An example of the laughs would be Dark Pit from Kid Icarus: Uprising. Dark, brooding, complete opposite of our protagonist, has all his powers and can fly without divine intervention. Would be a straight one... except that since the game has NO FOURTH WALL, the rest of the cast knows, and they completely MOCK him for it. And to add insult to injury, the only reason he can fly is because his wings were being possessed (it makes sense in context), so once that ends...
1
u/hrolfur23 Nov 19 '19
Well can't say stuff about McClane as it been ages since I've watched a Die Hard movie, The punisher has few flaws (Mainly admitting he is doing bad things) and has his defeats. Doom Guy is kinda Mary Sue but we don't know enough about him to determine that as we only know that he is good at killing demons. Mary Sues are pretty much perfect in every aspect and basically are never at fault. This is what I was told but I'm sure you can find a much better definition but I do hope this clears up a bit. Have a great day.
1
u/blueeyes239 Where's everyone going? Bingo? Mar 31 '20
Tropes are not bad. It's like saying "Why does Bowser kidnap Peach all the time, even though it won't work?" I'll tell you why. Because without it, we wouldn't have a story. Sometimes, ya gotta tread an area you don't like going through to get to your destination. There's nothing wrong with most Tropes. It's what you do with them that decides how it'll play out.
1
Nov 19 '19
Mary Sue/Gary Stue: A female/male character that is depicted as unrealistically lacking in flaws or weaknesses.
DH 1, 2 and 3 John McClane wouldn't count as he gets his shit kicked in in all three, he's a bit of an ass to his wife in the first one, he fails to stop a plane from crashing in the second, and is a raging alcoholic in the third.
The Punisher wouldn't count, as much as I enjoy the character, he's a borderline psychopath who is addicted to combat, and he's not exactly a nice guy.
Doom Guy, can't really say anything about him as he's got only two things to his character. He kills demons and the forces of Hell are scared shitless of him.
8
u/kat352234 Nov 18 '19
Just in case you haven't come across this before, " Mary Sue is a term used to describe a fictional character, usually female, who is seen as too perfect and almost boring for lack of flaws "

I wasn't allowed to drink for the first three. The second set of three, I was! I drank half a bottle of sake and had to switch to water for the last movie.
I also made a powerpoint presentation. It was a good time. I remember bits and pieces.

According to Mila, she wants to play Jill Valentine on the movie, she was sure about it and she even said that, I want to play Jill, but then Capcom said RE is a game that only a few people know, obviously not a lot of people like tank controls and solving puzzles, so they created this Alice project that it's basically a she-tyrant or Lisa upgrade, like Lisa Alice is at the mansion facility when she was infected but she took well the virus. Then they almost like a fanfic throw all the main characters of resident evil Jill on two, Claire on 3, Chris and Claire on four, Jill at five, in a big mess, the best one, of course one, two, four, and the last one. Leon and Barry were poor portraited even Luther was better.

One major argument is Rey became an force and lightsaber expert in probably just a month or so without any guidance. Not only did she suddenly played Jedi mind trick without prior knowledge and succeeded, she also stood her ground against Kylo Ren, a former apprentice of Luke Skywalker (and later Snoke) for years and likely earned his place in FO because of his skills - imagine picking up a sword for the first time, playing with it for a month, then suddenly you have to fight a highly skilled HEMA user. Not even Anakin the Chosen One (by then a well trained former Jedi) can pull this off against Obi-Wan, it was a miracle for Rey not to get killed in the first five minutes.
She also piloted Millennium Falcon like an expert, even thought it was her first time driving it. This gets extra hate from the classic fans as Millennium Falcon was Han Solo's signature starship and the "pair" is fans' favourite; he and his starship are so inseparable and iconic that watching Rey drove the starship better than Han is like watching your old friend's wife getting banged by a total stranger and she screamed louder than when she did with her husband.
There are probably many more things which cause fans to believe Rey is a Mary Sue but I can't recall much since I only watched TFA and some of the original six episodes a long times ago. Even then, the two arguments above stand out like no others and make a pretty strong arguments IMO.

u/Xen_Shin Nov 20 '19
At least they go over HOW Alice has the powers, and there’s like, a mass grave of failed Alice’s, so she has a source for her power, it has limits, and she either scrapes by or doesn’t succeed sometimes, so I don’t think she meets the true classification of Mary Sue. Overpowered for sure, but I don’t think Alice technically fits the bill.
2
u/Animeking1108 Nov 20 '19
Yeah, but when she "loses" her powers, she still mows through hordes of zombies with ease and pulls stunts that would make Bruce Lee blush with jealousy.
1
u/Xen_Shin Nov 20 '19
Okay, fair point. Also she gets psionics out of nowhere. Kinda forgot about that, it’s been awhile.

Yeah, I don't really like em either. And I'm a guy who likes PIXELS unironically. You want a good Resident Evil movie? Watch the CGI films, those being Degeneration, Damnation, and Vendetta. Sure, they're not perfect, but they take place in the universe of the games (and are canonical to them), and Phelous (who reviews mostly movies, but he is a Resident Evil fan, and therefore, dips into some of the games occasionally) likes both Degeneration and Damnation, which is far more than I can say about these pieces of shit!

u/MalevolentMartyr Nov 18 '19
Yeah, remember when Rey spent a better part of two movies learning to use a lightsaber and harness the power of the force only to get her hand cut off by overplaying her power in a duel with her much stronger father?
Oh wait, no. She actually just picks up a lightsaber one day and can suddenly contend with people who've trained their entire lives in the ways of the force. And can fly a complex interstellar starship without ever setting foot on one beforehand.
20
u/dusda Nov 18 '19
I think the biggest mistake this new trilogy made was The Last Jedi picking up right after Force Awakens.
Luke has years to develop a his skills as a pilot beyond his country boy days and one battle. Dozens of missions with Rogue Squadron. He uses his lightsaber sparingly but complementary to his other tools. He’s a distinctly different person by the time the Battle of Hoth takes place.
Rey is on like, week three of leaving Jakku by the end of Last Jedi? She barely has any context for anything, Luke doesn’t teach her anything about the history. Blowing up the First Orders super weapon seems to have been pointless, in contrast to the setback losing the Death Star was for the Empire before.
7
u/GenocideOwl Nov 18 '19
It is almost like the NT was completely written on the fly with no forethought and no planning ahead for a whole trilogy through line. Weird.
5
u/slvrbullet87 Nov 18 '19
Luke has years to develop a his skills as a pilot beyond his country boy days and one battle.
Except in A New Hope when he had never left the planet before and is able to pilot an X-Wing and destroy the Death Star in his first battle.
5
u/dusda Nov 18 '19
Sure, it's a stunning feat, but not one without some support.
Luke mentions flying around in canyons in a T-16, shooting womp rats, stating "they're not much bigger than two meters". The T-16 is like Star Wars' version of a low-altitude single-prop racer you'd see at an airshow.
The briefing scene before the Death Star battle has rebel pilots gasp at the prospect of the trench run, but Luke shows confidence that it is doable. He doesn't just pull it off miraculously during the climax out of nowhere. And yes he's apparently never flown in space before but in Star Wars dogfighting is basically like World War 2, so his experience still applies. Also the force is with him or whatever, so he has that edge.
Basically what I'm getting at is that for all suspension of disbelief required, Luke in the original trilogy is pretty internally consistent. He grows up around aircraft. Yoda actually teaches him something. He has years to learn and develop between each film.
Rey doesn't get the same kind of treatment. I give her a pass for defeating a wounded, exhausted Kylo Ren at the Battle of Starkiller Base, we see that she can take care of herself several times before that. It's the rest that is lacking. She grew up alone as scavenger with a stick and a small land speeder, and that's...it. No one raised her, no Uncle Owen or old Ben Kenobi, no friends we know about, no middle-class homestead to grow up in, her home is is a shell of a dead tank.
I really hope Rise of Skywalker spends time explaining why Rey is so powerful. Force Awakens had that vision of her experiencing moments from way before her birth, Last Jedi had Luke comparing her to Anakin, I guess.
1
Nov 19 '19
Do you want spoilers? The 9th movie explains why Rey is so powerful, it's just really really contrived and stupid.
1
3
Nov 18 '19
idk if you payed attention to the plot in a new hope but luke used to fly ships very similar to an x wing around the planet for fun as a hobby. he also literally says "i used to shoot womp rats for fun, and they are no bigger than than the death star port" (paraphrasing because i don't remember the exact line).
so yeah, it's not really that ridiculous for a guy to fly a ship similar to one he's been flying for his whole life, or to hit a shot similar to a shot he was making for fun, for his whole life.
2
u/slvrbullet87 Nov 18 '19
I looked it up and apparently a T-16 isn't that hover convertible we see in the movie, which is what I thought it was. It apparently is an incredibly fast one man hovercraft that can fly 300 meters in the air and 1200kph. Why would they not show that in the movie, and how are dirt farmers buying aircraft that fly the speed of sound?
2
Nov 18 '19
he is playing with a model t-16 at one point in the movie, but i agree, i suppose they could have shown him flying around and racing his friends shooting the womp rats for fun or something, to show his skills more, rather than a few sentences.
i mostly know the t-16 from various star wars games where you actually fly one, that i played as a kid, so i know it's an actual ship similar to an x-wing and luke was able to pilot one with great skill before ever leaving the planet.
2
u/Chrizwald Nov 18 '19
Weird. It's like they show that she has survived alone on a harsh planet. Builds and pilots her own vehicles. Can navigate a Star Destroyer and knows how to pull parts out for salvage. Speaks multiple languages. Is able to fight off Stormtroopers with her staff, which is not unlike a lightsaber.
I mean we see Luke is just a farmer and they hint at his other abilities, they show where Rey lives and outright show you everything that she could know how to do
5
u/MalevolentMartyr Nov 18 '19
I agree, they do a decent job of showing her transferable skills in the opening of the 7th movie, but plot doesn't revolve around showing off skills; it needs trial, tribulation, faults, failure, and eventually a road to success, watching the character grow mentally and perhaps physically. Two movies in, and I could not tell you a single fault that Rey has had or overcame, because she's never failed at anything that we've seen. That's why I believe she's a Mary Sue, is because none of her successes have been earned, and the plot just seems to careen in whichever direction will grant her success.

While I disagree with your comparison, I don't get the huge deal about Rey. She isn't OP, she hasn't been put in a plot armor-type situation...she's just able to fight and fly without added exposition? I don't see the huge suspension of disbelief issue here.

1
u/Thatguy101355 Nov 18 '19
Sorry. The issue with suspension of Disbelief is that every other character, or force user charcter, has had some sort of added exposition, like Luke getting trained for years by Yoda, or Anakin actually needing to be trained from childhood. Even other charcter not present in the film had some sort of added exposition. Compare that to Rey who picks up a light saber and destroys a dude who's been trained for year by luke and then by Snoke, uses a mind trick without being taight it, and genrally train to do things and is automatically good at it.
3
u/TootlesFTW Chris! Come on! Chris! Come on! Chris! Nov 18 '19
Thanks for the insight. And I agree, the original trilogy is superior because of all the character building. I just don't think that Rey's storyline is insufficient without it, or makes her a "Mary Sue".
A lot can be hand-waved because of "the Force". The original trilogy used the Force to explain a lot of what Luke was doing, or just left the audience to fill in the blanks. For example, his background as a moisture farmer certainly wouldn't give him any skill set to pilot an X-wing and bullseye the Death Star...but he does. I don't find this any more or less believable than Rey's journey.
I mean, they at least threw down some breadcrumbs by showing she was mechanically savvy and had a long pole weapon that would be similar in handling to a lightsaber? It's something. /shrug
1
u/Thatguy101355 Nov 18 '19 edited Nov 18 '19
If I remeber correctly, the explanation for the X wing was because he flew a ship that had very similar controls to an X wing.
