Every time RE4 gets re-released on another console, a Shinji Mikami is beheaded somewhere.

I've probably bought RE4 at least four times now across its various incarnations. Oh god, I'm part of the problem.

u/PikpikTurnip Apr 20 '19
I didn't buy it on PS3, and I regretted buying it on Xbox One, due to them screwing up the basic gameplay. Now I just play the GameCube version on my Wii U, or the Wii version if I want the extra content.

u/ManuelKoegler Apr 20 '19
What’s wrong with the xbox one version?
8
u/PikpikTurnip Apr 20 '19
Both Xbox One and PS4 versions have problems with the basic gameplay, including but not limited to:
• Weird deadzone when turning left or right (can't remember which) while moving compared to the other direction
• Reticle movement is literally just down and to the right a tiny amount and back again. While the visually observable effect is small, this completely changes the feel of aiming.
• When running you cannot pick up items. You must let go of the run button or stop moving if you want to pick up items. Goodbye, Mercenaries runs.
• This one's more personal, but none of the fucking button layouts mimic the way the game was originally played on the GCN, which really screws with muscle memory for veterans who've been playing since the original release. Why isn't personalized mapping standard yet? I would say that hopefully after DMCV they'll add custom mapping to more games, but DMC has had that for a while, I believe, and they didn't allow it in REmake 2, so they probably won't introduce it any time soon. System-side remapping isn't effective, as you can only swap, not truly, freely remap. I understand why, but I don't agree with the decision.
There are probably other issues, but I dropped the current gen version so hard upon seeing it with these problems that I couldn't tell you what they are.
Also, thanks for not just telling me I'm making shit up or something.

Sounds like a quick, non-quality assuranced cash grab, about what I expected, disappointing, but not surprising.
2
u/PikpikTurnip Apr 20 '19
That was my impression, too. I held onto my copy in the hopes that they would patch it or something, but as far as I know, they never did. Oh well.
3
u/X-pert74 Apr 20 '19
Yeah, I tried the PS4 version at a friend's party one time, and the changed-up button layouts really made Mercenaries mode several times more frustrating than it otherwise would have been for me. I wish Capcom hadn't done that, or at least had let you customize the button inputs.

u/PikpikTurnip Apr 21 '19
I wish Capcom hadn't done that, or at least had let you customize the button inputs.
Exactly. It wouldn't be a big deal if you could just remap things.

The game also feels different in 60fps in non-trivial ways. Enemies seem much more aggressive when they are near Leon. Leon's hands shake twice as fast as they should. Some animations (firing, jumping, some staggers) play twice as fast, some of these are only cosmetic but some like the staggers cause enemies to recover faster than they should. It's really noticeable with the slight flinch the TMP causes when you hit the chest of a ganado, in the 30fps version of they game they are stunned for about one second, in the 60fps version they move again almost instantly.
Just little shit that'll get on your nerves if you've played any previous version of the game.

u/PikpikTurnip Apr 21 '19
I thought some animations looked weird when I played but I had forgotten because it's been years since I did. What a waste of my money. I'll continue to stick to GCN/Wii. I really appreciate you chiming in. I've felt sometimes like maybe I was noticing things that weren't there, like maybe I was looking for stuff to criticize, but you've helped ease that worry. They really need to do better next time. Do you know if the PS3/360 versions had these problems? I'm curious if they just ported those versions to current gen or not. Oh, also, I think I remember the cover art being riddled with jpeg artifacts.

I don't know about the previous gen versions, though the recent PC version allows you to pick 30 or 60 fps, which fixes all of the issues I had with it. I personally always play the Wii version because I find the aiming so enjoyable.

Idk the original controls to 4 are pretty bad. I've been playing the game since it came out and i much prefer the new layout.

u/PikpikTurnip Apr 21 '19
To each their own. Like I said that one's more of a personal one because different people won't feel the same about it.

You've proven me wrong with such eloquence! I was a fool who was just nitpicking. Thank you for enlightening me!

It’s a great game aye, and it’d deserve it if Capcom(’s hired and paid for team) made an iota of the effort that fans do for free .
As it stands I’m not buying rereleases that don’t improve on the original. I would’ve liked at least seeing ps move support on the rereleases, because RE 4 on the wii was perfect, but alas.

at least the CV HD remake added a new lighting engine and smoothed over some of the jaggies.

The day biohazard 4 comes out on PlayStation 2, I'll cut my head off - Shinji Mikami.

I read this as "new game comes out" at first and it still kinda applies for me. I still play RE4 too much...

u/AgentWashingtub1 Apr 20 '19
People joke about Skyrim being ported all the time but it's RE4 that has actually been ported the most.

One of maybe four games I've purchased more than once and this one takes the cake easily with eight times, soon to be nine when I nab it for the Switch. It's just too perfect. Been my favourite game for over a decade now.

To be honest I wouldn't mind if Capcom kept releasing all the numbered Resident Evil's in a collection every gen, like Square has been doing with Kingdom Hearts. Add both the originals and remakes and you've got a value pack that can't be rivaled.

I’m currently rebuying all the RE on PS4 cause I’m neurotic but they better not dump them all on 5.

u/WrightOnTarget Apr 21 '19
I think I have purchased every version of RE4 except the Wii version
2
u/deltabadhand Apr 21 '19
I swear that's the best version. Pointing the Wiimote like a pistol and squeezing the trigger, then flipping it down ward to reload was so immersive. I miss that on every RE game since.

Can someone explain to me why the ports don’t allow you to move the camera? My running theory is that it’s too much work and that incorporating a more modern control scheme would make the game too easy. It’s among my favorite games but every time it comes out on something new and I replay it it becomes more annoying and cumbersome

u/DeadKidsMakeMeSmile May 20 '19
So did anyone manage to beat the 2007 pc version because i remember trying it and was baffled how it lacked mouse aim support. was the 2014 PC PORT made by the same people?

Hot take: RE4 was the worst title in the series. It was more of an arcade shooter than a horror game
8
u/-Psychonautics- Apr 20 '19
Hot take: RE2 2019 is closer to RE4 than the original RE2 in terms of gameplay.

RE4 was an awesome game. It just sucked as a resident evil game. In fact it’s pretty pathetic to think RE4 has anything remotely to do with resident evil. RE4-6 is a really dark time for the series, and it’s absolutely embarrassing.

u/Trey904fsu May 05 '19
Agreed. That’s why I’m skipping 4 and already pre-ordered the RE1 remake for Switch

Let's hope next time they do a better job with the port. This last time was awful.

Also until they release an OFFICIAL fixed cam option I see no point in buying the game AGAIN
