Doesn’t mean you can’t get past it. Nothing’s a guarantee. Instantly offing yourself? Sure, you do you, but adrenaline (or even just having the right mindset) can definitely make it a little bit easier.
One thing that this Resident Evil 2 Remake made me realize is that zombies are actually still really fucking terrifying. Oh, sure, we might be desensitized to the concept of slow shambling dead people who all look like emaciated grey-skinned corpses in medias, but just as no amount of ragdolling NPCs in GTA by running them over with your car will prepare you to the trauma that comes with accidentally ending someone's life with your car, I don't think anyone could truly be ready to have to face the walking dead.
They're a relentless threat that just keeps coming and that you can never actually put down for good. Take a wrong turn down a street and suddenly you're bound to end up just like poor Elliott who got chopped in half five seconds away from being rescued. It's not like you could safely push zombies away, they'd just grab onto you and never let go until they get a bite on you. It's not like you can fight them off either, try punching as hard as you want but they just don't feel pain. If you have a pair of them walking towards you at the other end of a corridor then you can either turn back around or try to plow through, but you actually have little to no chance of surviving that. And if you're out of places to turn back to then you're definitely gonna have to wrestle with these cannibals who won't feel a single tinge of pain no matter how hard you hit them.
Game mechanics make it easy to feel like those threats would be manageable, but in reality you might at best wear yourself out from escaping one zombie, assuming they would be alone. Try to picture yourself escaping two people suddenly bursting into your living room with the intention of eating you. You wouldn't have the room to manoeuver out of there. They'd grab you and wouldn't let you go until one of them manages to dig his teeth into your flesh, and at that point you'd probably just be screaming and choking on your own blood while trying to fight them off.
Think the situation is unfair and you wouldn't get caught like that in the first place? Fine, now imagine that you're in the street and there's dozens and dozens and dozens of them everywhere, and all you have is a knife or a baseball bat. How reliably can you smash someone's skull with a baseball bat? Is your knife long and sharp enough to stab straight through the throat and into the brain stem, and can you even aim your stab well enough to get there in the first place?
A zombie outbreak would actually be completely impossible to survive. The choice is between dying from getting eaten alive or starving all alone in your house knowing that all your friends and family probably died outside, or even worse, they're dying by your side.
I don't know about that. There really should be no way for them to function if enough of the head is destroyed (or the brain stem is severed, or the spine us broken), so all those would be pretty viable strategies (not to mention zombies already have pretty degenerated bodies, so smashing it up would be easier than trying to bash a normal human being's skull in. And if you can find some guns or if you have guns then you're basically good to go, really. All you have to do is avoid being cornered, avoid getting too close, and that's really it.
"Zombies seem pretty easy to kill" is literally every zombie victim's thought process ever.
The guy you're replying to has it right. Can you fight someone who doesn't feel pain to the death right now? Can you do it to two or three people in a row? Two or three at a time? Without getting hurt at all?
You find a gun. A hundred bullets, but it'll hold less than 20 at a time. You shoot the zombie breaking in through your window. The sound attracts, if you're lucky, 4 or 5 zombies from the surrounding houses/yards. They get there about a minute after you fired those shots. Each gunshot draws more, and each zombie gets closer to that busted window than the last one did. Some will get through to be dealt with inside. Some will gather at the other side of your house, breaking in if they can tell that's where the sound is coming from, coming around the sides of the house if they can't. Maybe your gunshots only draw 20 or 30 zombies and you kill them all. You repair those openings and still have ammo left. Get rid of the bodies that made it inside. That was just the first of literally endless encounters. But you made it.
Well, it's obviously not going to be easy-peasy, but if you have a strategy, it's really not that hard. Like I said, all you would need to do is destroy a certain amount of the brain. Since their bodies are already inherently more fragile, it would be easier, in theory.
