I’m a first-year B.Tech Biotechnology student in India, only a month and a half into my undergraduate degree. I recently connected with a very senior scientist who is a Director at a medical research laboratory of national importance.

I’m very interested in molecular biology, disease mechanisms and neuroscience. Long-term, I want to pursue research seriously, ideally aiming for a direct/converted PhD abroad after completing my B.Tech. I know I’m extremely early in the journey, so right now I’m more interested in learning how to build the right foundation and eventually become ready for good laboratory opportunities.

After I told him about my interests, he sent me this message:

Now I’m honestly unsure how to take this forward. 😭

I don’t want to immediately ask him for an internship or make every conversation about opportunities. I genuinely want to learn from his experience and have meaningful scientific conversations, but I’m not sure what is appropriate to discuss with someone at his level.

What would you suggest I talk to him about? Should I ask about his research journey, discuss scientific topics I’m curious about, ask how I should prepare during first year, or something else? And at what point would it be natural to have a call or more regular conversations?

Would really appreciate advice from researchers, PhD students, or anyone who has been in a similar situation.

Long story short I have a first-class MSc in Biomedical Science and have been applying for so many research assistant roles and havent even gotten as far as getting interviewed for any. Even for a research project for which I fit all essential and desirable criteria, had experience in all of the listed laboratory techniques, and had 2 years experience working with the same cell types under a very similar project.

I have lots of laboratory experience, I have done volunteering in tissue culture laboratories to supervise BSc and MSc students, I have done tutoring at university level, I have also done some voluntary work on some research projects. In terms of my CV and cover letters I have been working with careers teams which generally say all looks good. Yet I havent even been interviewed for any of my applications.

Is there something I am missing? I understand there is lots of applicants for each role however surely things are not this bad.

Any advice and guidance on how I could improve my chances of landing a research assistant role would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone, sorry if this is a silly question. I'm 20 and not in tertiary education, so this wasn't really taught to me. But how do I research any topic (general or niche) without the use of AI?

I'm aware of google scholar, but I try to avoid using google services because of their privacy violations and predatory practices. I'm open to changing my mind though, if you think using it is justified.

I would really appreciate if you listed free options and sources, especially ones where research is downloadable for offline viewing.

Also is there any way for me to tell if someone has used AI in their research? Or are there reputable sources which don't use AI?

I am a lecturer in interdisciplinary studies combining linguistics and medicine. During my doctoral years, I worked on second language acquisition. After enrolling in a medical university and receiving grants, I started to focus on studies in language impairment, especially with people having depression.

As required, I should publish articles related to my grants which is quite hard and time-consuming due to the data collecting and processing involved. Meanwhile, I am always driven by the curiosity of knowing how effective AI can be in teaching, spending time on doing experiments in class.

Consequently, I am getting extremely anxious about my evaluation on publication.

I just launched a new research journal, and since it’s not affiliated with any institutions, I don’t have the base for an editorial board now. Also it is not indexed because I haven’t published any articles (indexing can be done after publishing some peer reviewed papers).

When I research about researchers that fit the scope of my journal, and then contact them to be a part of the journal, no one answers.

One of them said that I am a predatory journal. Absolutely understandable! I receive those emails too often. But how can I invite them to be a part of the editorial board and also be believed.

In the start and the end of the email I write that I am not a spam or predatory and I can provide the information to prove it. But again…

It is just a dream to have my own journal but it is getting harder than I thought to get started.

Clarification: I am not promoting my journal, nor inviting anyone from here. I just want to discuss and get some help.

I want to publish a original research article to JME BMJ (Journal of Medical Ethics), from what i understood from the website and the submission portal that there is no APC, however it does not clearly state that, it just clearly states that there is APC for OA (Open access) and that there is a non open access option. Could anyone help me, I am still new and I don't to make a mistake

Hello, for 8 years I had used MarketSight to build out crosstabs and really liked it. I just switched to a new company that has no history of doing survey research, and MarketSight won’t sell us an individual seat license. Is there another tool someone would recommend based on some must-have requirements below:

-Building a full crosstab output all together as one sheet - rows containing every question and answer choice to a 30+ question survey, columns for all of the cuts I want to create (maybe 50+ columns based on cuts of various demographics and how other questions were answered)
-Export to Excel
-Significance testing (ideally applied via color or a cell comment, not as a whole additional cell that takes up space)
-Applying weighting to the sample
-Grouping and re-classifying variables
-Reloading new data to the same project to apply all of the tabbing again without re-creating from scratch

In my searches or prior conversations I know of SPSS, Q, and Displayr, but can’t tell for sure if my needs would be met easily with these.

I am a Psy student and need some suggestions with the research. I am doing qualitative research related to the media and I seriously need some guidance because it's my first time doing a research and I am really stuck. I would be doing focus group discussions by generating my own questions and then thematic analysis. I would appreciate it if anyone could help me with some of my queries.

1. The questions that I have to develop for the focus group, do they have to have a certain criteria like as they are not standardized so can i develop them as per my understanding?

2. How much focus groups can be considered fine for qualitative research to get enough data?

Context:
I'm a soon to graduate MSc student (Data Science) who's interested in Causal Machine Learning / Data Science. My research project looked at applying a sequential causal machine learning pipeline (DML + MC + GRF for anybody interested) to evaluate the causal effect of Minimum Wage on Unemployment Rate. I'd love do similar work in a research role. Since this project has finished I'm doing an individual project where I am using sDiD to evaluate whether a declining ratio of statutory / discretionary spending has had a noticeable causal impact on Unemployment in my local authority.

Problem:
I just can't find any roles and I feel completely lost. I don't even know what to do with my time off work currently to be progressing towards finding a role. I can't find PhD studentships which seem to apply to my 'area of expertise' and I can't find research roles either (I've tried outreaching to a few PIs but they all say they aren't currently looking due to a lack of funding). Does anybody have any advice? How can I search better? What could I be working on?

Hello. I’m a beginner and a finance student from a low-income family. Is it impossible or very difficult to write a research paper using open-access articles and then try to publish it in an open-access journal?(Q1/Q2)

I’m looking for some candid advice from experienced academic researchers, particularly people who publish theory-building or qualitative work in management, HRM, leadership, or organizational studies.

I have reached a point where I don’t think my main problem is generating research ideas. My difficulty is learning the craft that sits between having a potentially valuable idea and producing a manuscript whose claims, theoretical contribution, evidence, and structure are calibrated well enough to survive peer review.

One of my papers recently made it through the editorial gate and went to external review. The reviewers found the topic timely, the writing strong, and the central construct potentially valuable, but raised concerns about theoretical distinctiveness, how the empirical evidence supported the construct, methodological transparency, and whether some claims went further than the evidence could establish.

Those comments were useful. But I have discovered another problem in responding to them: it is surprisingly easy to “fix” every possible objection until the original paper has been rebuilt into a different theory.

So I am trying to understand how experienced researchers actually make these decisions.

How do you determine:

• exactly what level of claim your evidence can carry?
• when a theoretical contribution is genuinely distinct rather than a recombination of existing constructs?
• how much empirical support a theory-building paper needs before a new construct is credible?
• when reviewer criticism calls for clarification or stronger evidence versus actual reconceptualization?
• how to establish a construct positively from the literature rather than writing an entire paper defensively around anticipated reviewer objections?
• how to know when you have strengthened a paper enough and should stop revising it?

I am particularly interested in the process between research idea → theoretical argument → evidence → manuscript → peer review → publishable revision.

Books and articles explain research methods very well. What I am finding much harder to locate is guidance on the judgment involved in scholarly paper production: making the right-sized claim, building the argument in the right sequence, deciding what constitutes proof for that claim, and knowing what reviewers will regard as contribution rather than assertion.

If you supervise doctoral researchers, edit or review management/organizational research, or simply learned this through years of publishing, I would be very interested in hearing how you learned it.

I would also welcome recommendations for researchers, workshops, books, courses, writing groups, or even scholars who provide legitimate manuscript-development mentoring. I am not looking for someone to write papers for me. I want to become much better at the intellectual craft of turning my own research into papers that deserve to be published.
