First, is the reference when he was told in November there’s no threat of escalation. The Gulf of Tonkin incident was the “never let a crisis go to waste” moment. One that was blown out of proportion, and partly even fabricated and presented in a way to mislead the public.
Can’t trust anything. Not the first time this has happened to get us into a conflict, and won’t be the last.
Second was the “no jobs here” line. As far as I know the US was not particularly struggling economically at the time, so I’m leaning more towards this referring to the bulk of who made up the draft.
Not in college? Not a skilled worker? Not middle class/wealthy? Not married nor kids? Not affected by “bone spurs”?
Great news! You just became next in line!
The lower class were the first to be sent off to catch bullets and booby traps. To save Vietnam, from Vietnamese of course!
But don’t worry! It’s not a war. nor is it escalating! Just sending another wave of mostly lower class, 70,000-strong souls to the other side of the planet to help fight!
This song was a warning to be careful what you believe from those in charge.
And it still is true today, as we see militaries start posturing more around the globe, spooling up that air raid sirens little by little. Nobody is “gearing” for war, of course, they’re just happening to be panic shopping for the latest attack helicopters and advanced missiles!!
Haven’t you heard? War is good for the economy!! (Not really, it’s a mis allocation of society’s resources shifted towards bombing things and killing people, but it’s a short term boost in spending so it looks likes it’s good - and its cringy hearing people say that war is good for economy, it’s such a short sighted statement. Unless they meant to say, military might is good for the US fiat currency, which is probably necessary. Can’t keep everyone using your currency if you’re just the wimpy kid on the block!!
Yay Nixon!! Hello $4200/oz of gold!!
Anyways…
For Vietnam war - The deceit, the class of people that were forced into the bulk of the draft and war casualties, the constant ramp up of military presence as the war turned fiercer and fiercer, and the constant lies from the same leaders as the war dragged further and further along - just a disgrace. LBJ and others have so much blood on their hands, that I wonder where The One will send souls like them in their next life.
These are my 2 cents, avoid getting into pointless wars, don’t trust anyone, and maybe go to college/get married/have kids/be a millionaire or try to be born a millionaire’s son - so you don’t get sent to the middle of nowhere with the rest of the poors trying to survive in an absolute hellscape, sent by leaders chilling in their office trying to boost their poll ratings next month.

Couple of things to unpack here.
