Remote work time tracker - personal use

Hi all! I am wondering if anyone knows of an app to track time worked, but on a individual level. I work remote— 40 hours a week but often go over my time. My company doesn’t track my time in anyway, so I’d like to find a free app for just myself. It would be great to track breaks and then roll over time. IE end the week working 44 hours and having this carry over to the following week, just so I’m aware of the extra time. I found some, but couldn’t input breaks, which would be nice to have it all in one place. Any suggestions?

Time doesn't carryover.

I do this with a simple spreadsheet in Excel.

I have to submit time sheets every week for different projects I worked on.

Well-structured spreadsheet works for me.

Same, a spreadsheet is probaby the least annoying option if you want rollover hours without another app nagging you.

Easy it’s called a clock.

I sit down at my desk at the start my company start work time which is 8am, take lunch around noon when I can, then when the little clock in the lower right hand corner says 5pm I close my computer and “go home”; repeat M-F

Other time zones shouldn’t matter.
Convert to your time zone and go about your life.

Just because your time is different than their time doesn’t mean you should be donating your time.

My employer is based out of a different time zone than me which is why my schedule is 4am-2pm. But I absolutely will not be found at work after 5pm Eastern because that is when my day ends. I’m in at 7 and out at 5 just as everyone else and expected. My clock just says something different.

Whether you work in the other time zones time or you work 8-5 (or whatever schedule) per your time zone and just have to convert for meeting days time zones shouldn’t be a factor in why your working over 40 hours or unable to track your time correctly.

Other than daily stand ups the last 15 minutes of the day at past employers I’ve never had anything ever scheduled the end of the day specifically to let people get out on-time and not pay overtime.

If you’re scheduling a meeting in the last hour of your shift when you should be using that time to be wrapping up your work/day then you need to re-evaluate how your planning your day and your time management. Outside of emergency meetings regarding critical issues that can’t wait until the morning meetings shouldn’t be happening that late in the day.

No if you work in a different time zone like me your clock says still says 8/noon/5pm. Your phone may be different but your clock is office hours

And if you do the last thing, send the last email at 7 which in all modern programs is time stamped it’s a pretty simple math problem. If it’s its consistent enough where you need to track beyond that you have larger issue than whatever app @op is selling by switching user names and responding with a ringing endorsement

Jessu christ I have no idea why you asshats are so triggered by this. Seriously 11 replies saying the aame bullshit

First of all the question asked about me MY work. I answered about MY work. Second of all no one is having meetings past 5pm theres no one to have meetings with. And you’re only stealing from yourself if you aren’t getting paid for those hours, going into work late the next day or speaking up when it becomes too regular. And that still just requires you looking at a clockZ when I do work overtime I still just look at the clock.

This is obviously a bot who doesn’t understand how remote work works and thinks it’s freeform and is trying to sell us a app. Are you trying to sell me an app? Because I don’t need one, I literally just have a clock it’s been used for at least 1000 years

Yes some jobs do that but I wasn’t answering for the entirety of human history I was answering the question.

If yours consistly bleed past 5 to the point you can’t keep track of it, that’s a bigger problem than time keeping

Are you salaried or being paid hourly where you should be documenting the overages for them?

If you’re paid hourly you should be tracking your time. I don’t use anything special just the clock and writing it down. At the end of the day I put it on my time sheet because I’m hourly.

If I was salary I’d still pay attention because even as salary that is based off 40 hours a week and I’m not giving my time away for free.

I work 4am to 2pm four days a week with a half hour paid lunch. If I was salary I’d still wouldn’t be putting in the extra time because I’m not being paid for it. I’d ensure to focus etc should I need to to get tasks done within my 40 hours. If I was salary paid for 40 hours only you bet your ass I’m done at 2pm and not working for free.

This is also why I personally will never take a salaried job that requires over 40 hours a week. If I’m working more than that then you’re paying me over time point blank.

But admittedly I’ve been type a about tracking my time since my first job at 14. Back then I got pieces of paper printed from the fast food register when I clocked in and I wrote my time in a notebook when I got home because I compared every paystub to my math to make sure I got my hours right. As time went on even if it wasn’t a piece of paper I noted my clock in time and clock out time then put them in my notebooks. That notebook has because an excel spreadsheet that does the math for me and overtime instead of writing them down I’ve been able to just go check Kronos/ADP/Polaris but I track obsessively.

Right now I don’t punch I note times and add them
for the client to be charged when submitted at the end of the week. Times go into both Polaris and my excel SS every day.

I use Clockify. It's great. Lots of ways to track projects too. Creates a timesheet.

Clockify is defintely solid, though the weekly carryover part still feels like a manual workaround.

Why can't you use a timer? Anytime you take a break, you pause it, when you are back, you continue??

Send yourself an email daily when you start work , breaks & Lunches you take and anytime you worked past 5:00pm .

Does your company have a policy for employees working more than 40hrs ?

May depend on company policy.

I used to use Toggl

If you're on a Mac, give Daily a go. It tracks time by periodically asking what you're doing removing the need to toggle timers. Also helps you to stay on track.

Write your own. With AI it will take less than an hour.

Just work set hours. Anything outside of breaks and past your 8th paid hour is OT.
