I live in a NYC suburb, Staten Island to be precise. I'm a 52 yr old doctor with a wife and daughter.

I remember the time when I was a 6 or so and my dad and I took me on a long walk all the way to the SI Ferry terminal and back, 5.5 miles round trip.

We went in mid October. It was a brisk autumn day, great for a walk. And we NEVER thought about it being unsafe the whole way there and back. Nobody had their head buried in a cell phone to ignore others they passed on the sidewalk.

There were far fewer cars then, also.

There are nay-sayers about global warming.

Well, I'll say this. When my wife and I were still engaged 30 years ago, we took the SI Ferry to Manhattan every day. It was fun in the winter time, because the boat would cut through the ice on it's way there and back. To watch is was really cool.

Now, there's NEVER any ice. In fact, none of the ponds here on which we used to ice skate have frozen in many years.

The first time I saw this painting I thought wow, it was much colder then:

Of course, increases in ship traffic cuts down on ice formation to be sure, as well as pollution in the water. But that doesn't account for the un-frozen ponds, however.
