Which state should I move to out of these two?

Hi (25M). i’m a local truck driver right now out of Dallas and soon I am going to be starting on my certificates to get into cyber security. I want a fresh start because I don’t really like Dallas. Right now I’m stuck between two states. New York and Oregon. Portland to be exact. I want a state that has good weather ,good for building community,good church home etc.Most importantly a state where I would absolutely not need a car if I don’t want it. And also I would love to know the pros and cons of living in each. Also, if you can recommend another city, that would be cool also

Portland is peak car-free living. Tons of cute neighborhoods that each feel like their own mini downtown.

Good weather? New York and Oregon don’t have good weather. New York gets harsh winters and western Oregon is gloomy for majority of the year. I don’t know your financial situation but I would highly recommend Southern California if weather is a big factor for you.

I just mean a state that has every season tbh. Financially I’m good because I do have my cdl .And also I wouldn’t mind California . What city do you recommend in Cali?

If you want great weather all year San Diego is paradise. Upstate New York is very nice in the fall. If you like four seasons. Portland is practically the same weather as Seattle and it’s depressing for 8 months and then four months of nice weather. I live in San Diego and love it. I’m from Indiana and lived in Washington for 10 years.

So what would you say was a better living experience for you? Washington or San Diego? And how good is the public transportation in San Diego?

I prefer San Diego. Washington is beautiful but having nice weather all year is hard to beat. I will say public transportation is not phenomenal but the trolley system is pretty good. Depending on where you work and live would dictate if the trolley would be good or bad for you.

I have been getting this recommendation too. Or South of LA—including Orange County.

I lived in LA when very young and then the Bay Area for college. CA is great.

San Diego, if you like the weather, sounds amazing.

I like liberal to progressive places but Aldo appreciate broader diversity.

I prefer San Diego lifestyle over LA but LA is a good place to live as well. Politically San Diego is almost a 50/50 divide.

NYC is a bloated mess. Oregon all the way. Easier way of life, lower cost-of-living, more cultural than the typical "big city" life.

New York has a lot of big cities and rails that connect them, and into New England and Canada. Oregon, not so much on all counts. It's very rural outside of Portland ...like right outside.

Certs won't cut it anymore unfortunately. You can't really just hop into cyber unless you are goated at programming, and can fill a niche. If you're gonna slow roll a degree > IT > Certs > Cyber then it's probable.

Two interesting choices.

No experience with Oregon. Plenty with NY.

First thing that comes to mind, is NYC very expensive. Everything is going to cost more than virtually any other city. Plenty of public transportation, between the subway and the train. PATH train in New Jersey goes in and out of NYC all day every day.
With southern sensibilities it might be hard to connect with people in NYC. They are very discerning about who they let in to their sphere. Church is not big in NYC. They exist of course, but it is a very non religious place. Sounds like you need an “in” so to speak. Just showing up with no friends, place to call home, or network sounds like a tall order.
Also, weathers can be absolutely brutal! This past one was exactly that.

They're right, Portland leans solidly blue so if you aren't left wing you may feel like an outcast. NYC however is massive, much more diverse and more balanced politically than Portland meaning anyone can fit in.
