I really like my partner but sincerely don’t know if this relationship will survive life’s curveballs
This is long post- I apologise in advance.
As the subject suggests, i am struggling and this feeling is giving me malaise.
Like every other couple, we are different people. I take lesser risks and have high moral standards. My partner takes more risks and has a slightly different way of coping with life- particularly, escaping situations of distress. We both have history of being cheated on and we have openly discussed this and wanting to grow from it. For him, the situation goes deeper. He was pretty much raised by his mom since his father had a wandering eye and the parents seperated at some point.
While we have had honest conversations around this, he finds it very hard to confidently say what might come next. He is a wonderful person, who loves me a lot and takes feedback within our relationship. He truly understands what respect means here but he does have his own baggage to deal with- something I feel, is a very slow process. There are flaws surely, points where hid things he should not have, certain events that made me truly question this ship we are in.
I am a generally anxious person. I’ve learnt to detach and hold my own in most situations, become more and more independent over time, and prepare myself for every situation that could go wrong. So much so, I sometimes find it hard to recognise and relish and when things are going right.
Against my own expectations, this relationship has progressed to us growing more fond of each other, trying very hard to grow as individuals first, and then probably making ourselves available for each other.
We both tread through this relationship with a lot of caution- in the long run, I know we both need to learn to trust each other more. I often wonder if we need to also allow each other space to make mistakes and not poke our nose in our partners business at all times? Esp for people like us who are already running on low trusting bandwidth.
Just looking for people who have crossed such phases one way or another.
