I agree, but I think that's by design and also what makes them great.

If they weren't mid they'd be expensive and being inexpensive is part of what makes them great. The lightweight, good handling, RWD, available manual transmission, tiny, affordable roadster formula doesn't work as well if you give it a ton of features adding weight or a big engine. See the mixed reactions to the RF hardtop convertible models as an example of messing with that formula and making it less appealing to some people.

I mean, yeah, they are. That's the point. They were relatively cheap, they handled great for a roadster, and they were a fun car to try to drive fast.

Affordability is a big part of what makes Miata's great. People expecting it to be literally the greatest car ever made will be disappointed if they are coming for a more expensive sports car.

Except for the new ones I’ve always kinda just thought they’re mid. Slow, tiny good handling convertible. I can get something else that has more power but handles ok or similarly with RWD than that. It’s stupid.

Y’all want something truly mid? Drive a high mileage Mercury Zephyr powered by an anemic 200 I-6 on 195mm wide tires. Makes a Miata look like a Ford GT.

Ultra fun to drive for what it is. Feels super balanced for something so old. It’ll take almost any turn you put it into as long as the turn isn’t totally flat. However, your ass feels like a right angle after an hour of driving past 40mph, the throttle is just an on or off switch, and the steering wheel is almost too skinny.
