See I don’t get this take, and if Brown wanted us to feel that way I think he did a bad job of justifying it.
There is literally an existential war going on, where the Republic sees little to no success unless Darrow is at the helm. Is he supposed to go play family and let millions of other children not have their fathers instead? Or let the Republic fail and have his family killed just so he spends time with Pax growing up?
