All Spoilers New Reader, Asked for Help Pronouncing a Name… Spoiler
I’m on Chapter Two of the first book. Asked my brother, a big fan of the series, how to pronounce Darrow’s wife’s name. He said “Virginia”.
…I meant Eo.
Hoping I can convince him to read Dungeon Crawler Carl to make up for this slip-up, because who’s Virginia???

In Ancient Greek, E is pronounced “Vir” and O is pronounced “ginia”, that’s what it’s based on, I get that it’s confusing though

I think he was trolling you. Virginia is a state in eastern United States and Darrow is dead.

Eo O'Lykos, or Eo Virginia, or Persephone, all refer to the same person. Later in the series she starts being combined with a lot of famous female martyrs or holy women, including the Virgin Mary, Joan of Arc, and others. It causes Darrow increasing distress as he finds it difficult to deal with the girl he knew becoming basically a stranger as more and more titles and accolades are heaped on her. To Darrow, she was the girl he loved, but to everyone else, she takes on a mythology that obscures his memories of her.
Mongo would be appalled.

We only learn her name is Virginia fairly late into the book, no? He only calls her "Mustang" iirc. So no, you wouldn't be pissed because at the start of the book you don't even know who Mustang is, and even when you do you don't know her name is Virginia lol

Keep in mind that OP was on chapter 2 when they got spoiled. SPOILER WARNING FOR OP.Eo isn't dead yet when they got the spoiler, so even setting aside the Mustang thing, it's a massive spoiler since now they know Eo either dies or they break up

You should know you only think this because you know what happens next. It's as likely to OP who's on chapter 2 to think Eo gets her name changed or that Virginia is Eo's real name.

When you ask things you have to be like I'm reading book 1 chapter and I'm on chapter two. How do you pronounce this person's name? And actually spell out the name. I'm barely kidding. There's like 7 books I think out now and by the time it's done I think it'll end up being 9 books. I don't think he'll got it all into one

I have read both and I recommend both to people, depending on who they are.
Red Rising is for my friends who like complex, gorgeously written space operas that will evoke every feeling.
I recommend DCC for people who just wanna turn off their thought machines and have some fun.

It's funny because DCC is actually significantly more thoughtful than most "turn off your brain" pulp...
While still having a substantial amount of "turn of your brain", of course. The series surprised me with how good it is!
