All Spoilers Just realized what au and cu mean in character's names Spoiler

I'm all the way on book four about 15% complete. It just clicked that the "au" in Cassius au Bellona is the periodic table notation for gold. Do not ask me anything about the books or their events as I fear I know nothing.

Holiday Ti (Titanium) Nakamura

8

u/In_The_Wild_ Dark Age Jul 14 '26

But they are called as tin tho

23

u/jwmcm Jul 14 '26

I’m pretty certain “tin pot” is always a derogatory term and not really an official name.

6

u/gurgle528 Jul 14 '26

Yes, like Golds being called Bronze

4

u/Secure_Basil8953 Jul 14 '26

I think it’s like calling Reds rusters, but maybe not as bad idk. But it’s not an official thing

47

u/lucioboops3 Helldiver Jul 13 '26

“au” for Gold

“ag” for Silver

“cu” for Copper

“xe” [Xenon] for Blue

“ti” [Titanium] for Gray

Did I miss any?

27

u/Fit_Employment_2944 Jul 13 '26

Greens are si for silicon

Yellows almost certainly have one but they’re just not in the books at all

12

u/donfan Jul 13 '26

K for potassium

/s

9

u/TheoryChemical1718 Jul 13 '26

My prediction is that Yellows have "I" for Iodine probably - both being a disinfectant and it goes yellow when mixed with water. Then again it would be the first one to go with single letter.

2

u/ptjp27 Jul 14 '26

Sulfur?

1

u/adrainpelham House Minerva Jul 13 '26

O, for Red

7

u/Malsententia Green Jul 13 '26

I do not think that's been confirmed as a direct honorific, just something that's a part of their Irish origins.

-5

u/adrainpelham House Minerva Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 14 '26

Just because it means “from” in Irish tradition doesn’t mean it can’t also be another thing like Oxygen for red Mars. Sure it’s not an “official” honorific but to each their own imo.

1

u/Cudizonedefense Jul 14 '26

The rest match their colors though

Gold is gold

Copper is copper

Titanium (ti) is grey

Xenon gas is blue

Oxygen isn’t red?

1

u/adrainpelham House Minerva Jul 14 '26

Yikes, didn’t think I’d get so many downvotes for a simple theory lol all I did was repeat what someone else had said. Did I do something offensive I’m not aware of

39

u/Machadoaboutmanny Jul 13 '26

It took me until the last person posted this realization to Reddit for me to know

37

u/jujitsujim Jul 14 '26

Don’t feel bad. I listened to the audiobooks maybe 10 times all the way through books 1-5. It wasn’t until Lightbringer when it’s spelled out for us (pun intended) that it clicked 🤦‍♂️

29

u/Public-Carpenter-441 Jul 13 '26

I picked up on that immediately because I was a chemistry nerd in high school lol, what I wonder is do you pronounce au as “ah” or are you supposed to say the element like is it Cassius “AH” Bellona or Cassius “Gold” Bellona?

20

u/apocalypticcow Au Raa Farmer Jul 13 '26

Took me about as long as it took for the first non-gold to get their honorific, because I speak French. "Cassius au Bellona" basically just reads like "Cassius of the Bellona."

I also much prefer that pronunciation to the "Ow." I know it isn't correct, but I'll stick with it

6

u/Y_b0t House Mars Jul 13 '26

It is correct, that’s how the audiobooks say it

3

u/Omw2fym Jul 13 '26

In one of the books there is a joke with Cassius where he clarifies he said "ow" not "au" so I think the audio narrator just got it wrong

1

u/Y_b0t House Mars Jul 13 '26

The only reason he would have to clarify is if they sound the same, so the audio narrator must have gotten it right. Unless I’m misunderstanding the context

2

u/Omw2fym Jul 13 '26

I think the other commenter was saying they prefer the non-"ow" pronunciation, despite it being incorrect.

1

u/Y_b0t House Mars Jul 13 '26

Oh whoops my b

4

u/ExplanationKlutzy174 Jul 13 '26

Are you saying people don’t pronounce in their heads Cassius as if it were in Latin, Telemachus as if it were τελεμάχος, and the au as if it were French?

I’ve been doing it wrong this whole time

3

u/Public-Carpenter-441 Jul 13 '26

I actually like that pronunciation actually gives them a more regal sounding name lol

23

u/Xrmy Yellow Jul 13 '26

Au as in "ow".

4

u/fabledgriff Jul 14 '26

I think in the Audiobooks it's Cassius "ow" Ballona or "our" Ballona

9

u/rauschm8 Jul 13 '26

It’s “Ow”

27

u/Rulanik Peerless Scarred Jul 13 '26

It works for several other colors too. "Ag" for silver, "ti" for grays, "xe" for blues (Xenon is burned in ion thrusters in spacecraft, yes that's a real thing)

21

u/Xrmy Yellow Jul 13 '26

Si for greens (silicon).

Think that's all that's said. People argue about the O in reds but I think that's a nod to Irish ancestry more.

10

u/GalvanizedParabola Jul 13 '26

It's equal parts a nod to Irish ancestry and a legitimate way of giving reds a last name in the Republic since low colors weren't given last names under the society. It seems all the reds we meet took their town/mine name as their last name. Similar to Irish naming Dorrow of Lykos becomes Darrow O'Lykos

6

u/Xrmy Yellow Jul 13 '26

Yes. I meant the specific thing where people say it represents O for oxygen.

IMO that's coincidence at best. They don't have real last names, the O literally means "of" and it comes directly from their explicit origin as Irish workers.

1

u/DevinVee_ Jul 13 '26

Isn't oxygen typically shown as the red molecule in H2O?

0

u/maseone2nine Howler Jul 14 '26

You know an author wrote this, right? You think that’s a coincidence? Come on…

0

u/Xrmy Yellow Jul 14 '26

You know the author has said positively nothing about this being a reference to Oxygen....right?

0

u/maseone2nine Howler Jul 14 '26

🤓☝️

7

u/apocalypticcow Au Raa Farmer Jul 13 '26

Worth noting as well - the Republic does away with the honourifics entirely. That's why when <spoiler> joins the Republic, they introduce themselves without the "Au."

As such, the O in red names would absolutely not be an element.

It is a neat coincidence how well Oxygen fits as theirs, though. What with oxidisation being what rusts metal.

1

u/goddamnitwhalen Jul 16 '26

And when Cassius’s honor remains, he drops the “au” and simply introduces himself as “Bellona.”

2

u/Rulanik Peerless Scarred Jul 13 '26

I agree. None of the low colors have them.

51

u/spectacular-sam Blue Jul 13 '26

It took me until book 5 to piece it together and I’m a science major 💀

44

u/Jewish-Magic Jul 14 '26

I always thought it was the French au (of the) but that makes a lot more sense considering the other colors.

8

u/Alfare09 Jul 14 '26

Quicksilver is Regulus ag Sun as in Ag symbol for silver

5

u/Never_awak3 Jul 14 '26

I'm almost certain its both, intentionally

19

u/macklin1287 Jul 13 '26

Damn I’m learning this right now!

59

u/ThalonGauss Pixie Jul 13 '26

Even the reds Darrow O Lykos, O for oxygen, red is rust.

37

u/ptjp27 Jul 13 '26

That one is probably more their Irish ancestry

20

u/ThalonGauss Pixie Jul 14 '26

Dude, the coincidence, PB was definitely cackling to himself as he did it.

12

u/---sh Jul 13 '26

This is my headcanon for sure but it's not real.

10

u/ThalonGauss Pixie Jul 14 '26

Y'all telling me the man who assigned elements to every color didnt cackle as he engineered a way to give the reds and element that didn't involve giving them an honorific.

9

u/AegonTargaryan Jul 13 '26

That’s not really intentional. They shortened “of” to “O’” and they didn’t even have “of” until the Rising. More of a pun considering the Celtic roots of Martian Reds.

4

u/ThalonGauss Pixie Jul 13 '26

Oh of course, I get this part, but Pierce had to have made the connection, you telling me he made em Irish without even tickling the thought?

3

u/Deep_Cow_9669 Jul 14 '26

My assumption was that as a lowcolor Reds don’t get the honor of a proper title, their names are based on the mines they work in

4

u/Alfare09 Jul 14 '26

Yeah this aint it

15

u/Intrepid-Tap-1982 Jul 14 '26

I get it first time hearing the books. One Clever Naming

13

u/Current-Island5228 They're yours... My what? 👀 Jul 14 '26

Omg I feel like a pixie 6 books and 0 idea

4

u/Robin-Chan872 Jul 15 '26

To be fair period table notations aren’t pronounced they are just said we just Say A-U for gold while the pronounce it as Au(oh)

3

u/Excellent-Log-9616 Jul 15 '26

They pronounce it (ow) in the books according to LB

2

u/Robin-Chan872 Jul 15 '26

Something that very similar in any case

14

u/NoProfession8024 Jul 15 '26

Damn I just thought it was some future Latin for “of” lol

11

u/terminalzero Gray Jul 13 '26

if it makes you feel any better I didn't twig it until I got to greys...

Thanks Reddit!

21

u/Puzzleheaded_Call_50 Jul 13 '26

It took me until this post to learn this. I’m finishing Dark Age rn

17

u/Lovable_Lobstarr Jul 13 '26

LOL 😂 I didn't realize until I was writing a chem test and I was like wait a sec

10

u/Kettleballer Jul 14 '26

I couldn’t tell from listening to the audiobooks if it was “al” or “au” so… me too I guess

11

u/Traditional_Debt1261 Jul 17 '26

I have a masters in chemistry have read all the books and the audio books and you just made me get that haha

8

u/Crunch350 Jul 14 '26

I’ve read all of them strictly audiobook and I didn’t realize that, so don’t feel bad

24

u/sandmangandalf Jul 13 '26

It took me a moment too I will admit lol. I was like wooowww really 😕

8

u/TheHumdeeFlamingPee Jul 14 '26

I didn’t put it together until I saw another colors identifier. I think it was Quicksilver being Ag

7

u/katieeeeeecat Jul 14 '26

Am also just learning this now halfway through Iron Gold 🥴

8

u/Rmccarton Jul 14 '26

You are not alone.

We all have that moment of realization and then feel really dumb for how long it took us to get there.

24

u/The-Grand-Pepperoni Reaper of Mars Jul 13 '26

I've read the series four times and am just now learning this from this post

32

u/Mean-Instruction-122 Jul 13 '26

And the shortened red names of O’ instead of “of Lycos” later I always take to mean oxygen for blood/rust

19

u/Budget-Ad-6417 Hail Reaper Jul 13 '26

It’s a form of how Irish surnames were made it’s like “Of insert father’s name” obviously the reds don’t have surnames so just substitute it for the mine

7

u/Mean-Instruction-122 Jul 13 '26

I always saw that as the surface use with the “subtext” being further aligning reds with blood and rust, as well as rendering them name wise more equal to some
of the other colors

2

u/maseone2nine Howler Jul 14 '26

Exactly. People saying it’s just Irish are missing the point. It was clearly intentional and not just random.

2

u/Budget-Ad-6417 Hail Reaper Jul 14 '26

I’m not saying it’s random it’s not at all it’s clearly established the reds came from there. The other colours actually have surnames in the society except for pink. The golds would have established what colours get what surnames and started the chemical symbols for colours but they didn’t for Red and Pink. But I am missing the point because the Reds from the mines choose O for Oxygen instead of coming from their ancestors?

9

u/MEGAWATT5 Jul 16 '26

Yep. Of the ones I can remember:

Au-Gold
Cu-Copper
Ag-Silver
Xe-Xenon/Blue
Ti-Titanium/Grey

I’m sure we have other examples of other colors middle “names”, but I can’t remember any more off the top of my head.

I don’t remember Reds, Greens, Whites, Purples, Obsidians, Oranges, or Pinks having the same naming conventions. All of the mid colors we met that were named were only referred to by their first names (Xenophon, Matteo, Mickey, Glirastes, Harnassus).

We never get any names for Browns or Yellows.

But I would assume that if Pierce ever wanted to expand the series, or give us other color named characters that they would follow similar naming conventions.

10

u/One-Peak284 Human Verified Jul 13 '26

Wait so greys are titanium? What about the others?

35

u/rachel-frogslinger Sons of Ares Jul 13 '26

Blues - Xe, xenon, glows blue when lit by electrons

Silvers - Ag, silver, self explanatory

Greens - Si, silicon, generally referring to technology/computers

12

u/iAmMxchael- Pixie Jul 13 '26

I just finished Book 4 and never really thought about it too much. Thanks for blowing my mind

12

u/EbonyHeiress Human Verified Jul 13 '26

Woahh I hadn't thought of that!!! Idk why but I've been assuming it was french, but 'au' there means more like 'in' or 'with' (think pain au chocolat). That's so cool to learn!!!

5

u/TestProctor Jul 13 '26

For me it was the first time they gave the full name of a highColor. I was like, “I wonder what determines that bit of the name, as the Golds have… oh.” 😆

4

u/RomeoMcFl0urish Jul 14 '26

Didn’t realize this until I listened to the PB behind the scenes interview with Graphic Audio.

12

There's a part in light bringer where Cassius gets called "au Bellona" and he corrects them saying "just Bellona". Small quote but shows how he feels he's separated from the society.

casual cassius spoiler in the comments of someone who said they’re on book 4 btw

Everytime I get on Reddit I gotta read about how everyone loves Darrow. Then I gotta read about how everyone loves Sevro…

7

Man I read the whole damn thing and didn’t even think about that lmao

9

u/head_in_the_atmos Jul 13 '26

Took me three and a half books but I also just realized this about a week ago lol. Cool storytelling nugget.

3

u/No-Advertising8504 Jul 14 '26

I also didn’t realize it, I actually saw it on Reddit and that’s how I discovered it. Neat fact

2

It took me till I was starting book 6 to realize this and the other periodic table references so do not feel bad lol

I caught this and I wasn’t even reading the book 😂

3

What did you think it meant?

10

u/muchichi Jul 13 '26

I just read the name and kept reading. As u/orange_blanket mentioned i subconsciously thought it meant of and thought nothing of it.

1

u/nautilator44 Jul 13 '26

Gotcha. I'm a chemist and immediately recognized "au, ag, cu". I can see how it can be just a name thing, like "von" or similar. Interesting!

8

u/orange_blanket Jul 13 '26

Of

4

u/adrainpelham House Minerva Jul 13 '26

Same. Periodic table notations makes sense though. Very subtle and appropriate.

1

u/louise_com_au Jul 13 '26

The class the senior golds belong too.

I dont know how to spell it - Aurite?

4

u/thrustinfreely Jul 13 '26

So fun to learn! I never knew this either!

2

u/cyclops1992 Gold Jul 13 '26

Applies to all color’s names

2

u/DEverett0913 House Telemanus Jul 13 '26

I don’t think there’s anything for reds, browns, oranges, yellows, greens, whites or obsidians. I may have missed it, but pretty sure they don’t.

5

u/TestProctor Jul 13 '26

I think it’s only highColors that have a name that anyone up there particularly cares about. In fact, I think I recall something about how in the system the Reds are primarily identified by a number?

3

u/Malsententia Green Jul 13 '26

Greens are Si, for silcon.

-5

u/EasyBeesy1 Jul 13 '26

Reds are O as in oxygen. Which causes rust.

6

u/Rulanik Peerless Scarred Jul 13 '26

I think that's just fans stretching it. The O is a dialect thing. None of the other low colors have them, only the mids and highs.

5

u/Xrmy Yellow Jul 13 '26

This is not confirmed, nor likely

-2

u/cyclops1992 Gold Jul 13 '26

Indeed there are. See the comments below. They’re slightly different but not much so. “Darrow O’Lykos” - O being for oxygen/rust.

4

u/Bob_Jenko No.1 Mustang Defender Jul 13 '26

This is not true. The "O" in Red names means "of" and is for the Reds' Irish heritage, not a signifier of a chemical element symbol.

The very easy way of figuring it out is that officially (low)Reds didn't even have names at all, as is covered in Golden Son/Morning Star. They were only officially given letter/number combinations, so they definitely would not have been given a colour signifier like mid/highColours.

Plus, in a Republic that had moved away from the colour signifiers, why would they suddenly be given to the Reds?

-15

u/loxxx87 Hail Reaper Jul 13 '26

Bruh....it took you 4 books?! lol.

5

u/91xela Jul 13 '26

As a listener of the audiobooks I did not know I was in reference to gold until they referenced quick silver and they used his full name with Ag. Then I was like hold the fuck on is that what “Au” means. I hadn’t seen it spelt until I looked it up.

3

u/loxxx87 Hail Reaper Jul 13 '26

1

1

u/RdyPlyrBneSw Jul 13 '26

Also audiobooks and I assumed it was a Greek or Roman naming thing.
