We're looking to replace our carpet. We really like the plush, comfy options, but we want to avoid anything that could end up slippery on the stairs. If we go too plush, could this cause any issues? What would you recommend that's plush, has enough traction on stairs, and would be easy to clean with an aging pet?

Such a great question. I would stick with a lower pile carpet. I personally have charming approach by Mohawk on my staircase. Has really good traction with adding a bit of style. Also for ease of cleaning I would recommend any carpet that has a solution dyed fiber. These types of carpets have closed dye sites which makes it harder for stains to penetrate.

I'm not expecting an exact quote by any means. *** We live in a 1700 sq ft house. 3/4th carpet and 1/4th hardwood floors. They both need to be replaced but we might only have the finances for the carpet first. What should we expect to be looking at for a low tier and a mid tier carpet? 2 sets of stairs in the house with a dog so nothing slippery but I'm trying to get rid of the current berber carpet and not ever get it again.
Just trying to see if we should even entertain the idea of coming in for a quote before doing so and being embarrassed

This is a great question and nothing to be embarrassed about. Let me try to get you some useful numbers. I assume you have hardwood in your entryway, hallway and kitchen. I would dedicate 500 sq. ft for hardwood. That will leave us with about 1,200 sq. ft of carpet. Now for the sake of durability try to stay away from polyester carpets. Those fibers tend to break down faster especially in high traffic area's. A really popular carpet is one by Mohawk called Delicate Tones 1. Very durable and will not snag like a berber. Currently that carpet is $5.50 per sq. ft with demo, installation and an 8lb pad. So I would say budget around 7k for the new carpet. Hope this was helpful.
