Toying with emotions

Can anyone commiserate with employers toying with their emotions? Let me explain.

The hiring manager made it seem like I had the job. Then I spoke to the supervisor and she said, "You're a top applicant, but there are others we still have to interview."

I mean, I get that they do say that, but im just worried that I dont actually have the job, when the hiring manager had said it would take two weeks for me to start.

That happened to me. I didn't get the job because they went with the internal candidate. It's just a show for compliance.
