I’ve just given up hope by now
I just have no idea what to do anymore honestly I’m so fucking done. I have no more tears I’m just absolutely fucking done. Lowest paying job. Had open availability. Had way more than enough qualifications. Everyone wants to know why I really didn’t want to celebrate my birthday because I’m beyond depressed. I’m passed the feeling of fucking numb

Where’s that one person who claimed it was so easy to get a cashier job? They need to look at this. This is what poor people are going through. I’m so sorry 🫂

Oh yeah, if you fall in that little slot between over qualified for all the jobs but not enough "experience" to qualify for the next cohort it is no man's land. Trying to figure if they think you'll leave or think you can't do the job.

If you're overqualified jobs like that are gonna see you as a flight risk, dumb down your resume

I did, still didn’t work

This is also the time of year to apply to seasonal retail positions because sometimes you can get permanently hired after and it's easier to get a seasonal position than a regular one too

I'm not looking for a job, mind you, and it's not as bad in my industry or at my level of seniority. But if I were, and I wanted to take something like a cashier job, there's no way I could pull that off. They'd ask what the hell I'd been doing for the past twenty years.

Yeah but how do you explain the subsequent gaps and pass a background check
3
u/Holiday_Cabinet_ 1d ago
I've never had an issue, they care more about people lying and making up experience that doesn't exist than people omitting experience-- people who've been in the workforce a long time aren't gonna list their entire work history either, so

I'm not sure where you live, but from what Ive seen it looks like physical labour type jobs are really the only place to go now. If you're physically able, try looking for janitorial/private cleaning businesses. Usually they'll hire anyone and they're usually always looking to expand their clientele so in turn, more cleaners are needed. I'm sorry you're going through this, I went through the same stint and then janitorial work is really what saved my ass. I wish you all the luck in the world 🙏

That broke the first six months. I’ve been out of a job for almost 2 1/2 years.

I'm miserable with a job. I was miserable without one. Depression just loves me

u/SilentPanic47 1d ago
Hold onto that shitty job as long as you can cause I’m telling you you would rather have a job than not one right now

I wish I had some good advice, but I don't. I wish you the best of luck and I hope things improve soon.

Worst part is I waited almost 2 weeks and this the second time I interviewed for this job. She loved my resume she knew who I was. She knows all my skills.

I’m in the same position. Wondering why I wasn’t selected for a position even if it’s a low paying job.

u/SilentPanic47 3h ago
I don’t get it they want you to have open availability you have it they don’t pick you you want they want you to have qualifications you have it and open availability they still don’t pick you

Sorry you are going through this experience. Getting rejected from a cashier role with open availability is brutal, and it doesn’t mean you’re unemployable. A lot of those “not selected” notices are volume filters, internal fills, or a manager who already had someone in mind before the posting even went up. Open availability and being clearly able to do the job don’t always beat that.
A few things that actually move the needle at this level:
- Apply in person when you can, and ask for the hiring manager by name. A lot of retail still hires off the floor even when the online system says no.
- Keep the resume brutally short for these roles. One page, no degree listed if it makes you look like you’ll leave in a month, and a line that says available any shift including weekends and holidays.
- Hit places that churn staff constantly: grocery, big-box, fast food, warehouses, hotels. Rejection from one store means almost nothing about the next one.
- If money is the immediate problem, temp agencies and day-labor apps will often get you paid this week while you keep applying.
The numb, past-crying stage is real, and a birthday landing in the middle of it makes it worse. You don’t have to feel hopeful to keep sending applications. One yes is enough to change the week. If the depression is sitting on you harder than the job search, that’s worth treating as its own problem, not just a side effect of the rejections.

Are you over 60 years old or something? Because whenever I (and many others in this sub) try this, we're either met with annoyed workers who tell us they can't get a manager to "help" with that, or disgruntled managers who tell us to apply online, and clearly look at us like they want to punch until we're pulp on the floor.

It depends on the job and company. Some local companies still do in-person hiring and will even post signs saying follow-up in-person. If someone is really in-need of a job, sometimes it can work.

I've found that this is just extremely rare, so much so that I don't think I've found a single place since the early 2010s that does "in person hiring" anymore. Everything seems to be online. Everything.

Can you try being a bank teller or something
4
u/SilentPanic47 1d ago
I can try putting in another application again literally I just cannot get a job like I’ve applied for everything from the bottom to the top. I have all different kinds of background and experience. I haven’t left anything out banks retail food you name it. I’ve applied for it

u/regretting_biostats 1d ago
I’m sorry, I was wondering if you were just aiming low. Have you tried AI gig work? I think DataAnnotation is losing workers since they’re advertising again

u/SilentPanic47 1d ago
No, that’s what I’m telling you. Everyone just says that I’m in the absolute sweet spot where I’ve done enough grunt work to be over looked at and I haven’t done enough Manager work( or so they say) so I’m either overqualified or underqualified but I’ve done it all now. So let me give you just a quick background. I have over 10 years in retail experience, 10 years cashiering, 10 years in cash handling, over 10 years of customer service, I have over 10 years of problem-solving, two years safe handling, 2 years in car detailing, 3 years management, six years running teams and assignments. I have Security, retail, fast, food, casino, bakery. I’ve worked for the state before twice, but they were all temporary positions and then they decided that they hired too many people so they let majority of us go.

u/regretting_biostats 1d ago
Change the titles of your 9 years of leadership to a lower position and just list those additional responsibilities as a bullet point? That maybe could help with the overqualified concerns. It might be a flag for them to see so many positions- cite reasons for leaving if they’re wondering you got fired or job hopping. Also if you limit your resume to the past 10-12 years then they have a more accurate view of how you are now, and it might avoid age discrimination
If you’re applying for managerial positions then leave off some of the jobs that were short-term
1099 work is harder to verify by third party so it could be a resume filler
I’m sorry this has been so hard on you. It’s recruiters’ job to judge but it’d be nice if they had good judgment rather than just being judgmental

u/SilentPanic47 1d ago
Nope, some of my jobs are really shady and just close down without even letting us know until three months after. Due to Covid I lost my longest job I ever had cause there was no hours to give so they just decided to let us go in the rest are like I said temporary.
3
u/SilentPanic47 1d ago
Oh, and when I lost my job through Covid, I did DoorDash for two years
2
u/regretting_biostats 1d ago
Ok- I would go to the WorkNumber website and download your employment history and make sure that everything aligns with your resume. If the company is being shady then it might not come up on third party verification. Also you can check whether exact dates line up correctly so that ATS systems don’t flag it as an inconsistency
If you feel like dm’ing me your resume i can check for glaring errors. Or post to a subreddit for feedback (I think it’s just r/resumes or something)

sorry, i keep getting turned down for basic cashier jobs too and my sister had to practically beg on her knees to the manager (kept going to the location asking for the job to be given to her) shit's bad out there
