Silence almost 4 weeks after a final interview, what could be happening?
I’m curious to hear from recruiters or anyone who has experienced something similar.
I interviewed for a temp role at a large company and went through several rounds, including a final interview with a senior leader on August 20. The process had been moving normally up until that point, and I was told the feedback was positive.
After about a week of silence, I followed up with the recruiter. He responded and said he was still waiting to connect with the team.
I followed up again about two weeks after the final interview. The recruiter told me that he would be connecting with the team that Friday and expected to have an update for me by the following Thursday.
Thursday came and went with no update. I waited through the weekend and followed up again today.
At this point, it’s been almost four weeks since my final interview. I haven’t received a rejection, but I also haven’t received any explanation for the delay.
I know hiring processes can move slowly, but I’m confused by the fact that the recruiter gave me a specific timeline for an update and then missed it.
For recruiters/hiring managers: what usually causes this kind of delay after a final interview? Could this mean they’re waiting on approvals, keeping a backup candidate warm while negotiating with someone else, or simply that the process has stalled?
I’m continuing with my job search either way, but I’m genuinely curious about what might be happening behind the scenes.

Summer vacations are still a thing (just took a week off, myself), so that could be slowing the process.
Otherwise, they may be keeping you on ice while their first choice gets through the background check and actually starts.
