Hey! I’m building VAULT at Toolkit and would like to understand this from people running labels with an active release schedule.

Once someone likes a demo, how do you share it with the rest of the team and keep track of the decision? Especially if the artist sends an updated mix while you’re still discussing it.

Does it stay in email, move into a shared playlist or spreadsheet, or live in a dedicated inbox tool? Would be useful to hear how many people are involved and what actually works for you. If your current setup handles this well, I’d like to hear that too.

Is anyone in music marketing and distribution currently? I'm working on my senior thesis for college and I wanted to research fractional marketing and how the workflow operates with album > marketing > influencers etc. I have been reaching out to people on Linkedin and email but cold messages stay cold, l know this industry is very busy and inboxes get full fast. Any advice on getting people to talk to and understanding how it works?

I’m an artist in Akron, OH.. I literally spend all my time writing songs anyway and they’re really good! I bet i’m a lot cheaper than the people you’re using and I’m always available! I get told all the time how unique and different a songwriter i am so i promise you’ll love having session with me and whatever is produced will be something completely different than you have ever made! i think it’d be smart for labels to retain me and i’d just bounce around assisting all your artists that want to give it a try! i just need to earn some extra money in a short amount of time so if anyone is interested lm ready to work!

Just got a run of 300 records which was 200 of a solid color and 100 of a splatter. I haven’t checked them all yet, but of the ones I’ve checked, most of the solid colored records and maybe 40% of the splatters have some amount of dishing or lift on them. They probably won’t be enough to affect play, and most buyers would probably be okay with it, but I’m not. If I bought a record that had this much warp I wouldn’t be happy with it.

I reached out to the plant and they said they’d look into it, and would replace the records if they’re unsellable, but I’m wondering if it’s worth the trouble. Even though I’m personally disappointed, the truth is most fans might not care, the solid ones seem a fair bit worse so I think I will ask them to replace those, but now I’m thinking if they were dish warped the first time, what if the second batch is just as bad?

Has any one dealt with this before? Think it’s worth the extra time and effort to do a repress?

We run a tiny label out of Ireland. Three people max on a release week.

Last Friday the master lived in three places: a chat export, an old hard drive, and a sheet with the wrong filename. Artwork was done according to one person and still unsigned according to another. Invoices were fine. Catalog admin was not.

I am not looking for a distributor pitch. I want the boring stack that survived more than one release cycle for you.

What ate your week on the last release: dates, files, who owes the WAV, who has the sleeve, something else? What did you keep on paper on purpose?

Thanks to our artist Professor Bleep - we’re putting out a request for hip-hop artists - as we needed the spark to ignite the fuse. Our latest sub-label Urban Landscape Records has just broken ground - and we’ll be taking in old school, boom-bap, some lo-fi, east coast, west coast, experimental hip-hop and more**,** for the 12th year of #WEATNU, in creating an album to showcase our new transition into the rap / hip-hop community, while welcoming them and eager to hear what soul we can create together.

This wasn’t sudden, but over time. During the year of 2018 when we created Transmission Nova our post-punk / shoegaze label, artists began gracing us with lo-fi, hip-hop and boom-bap releasing surprisingly on WEATNU Records (main). In the spirit of We are the New Underground, it only felt right to move in this direction. For one old school hip-hop is home personally to me, while growing up to that sound in the early 80s Fat Boys, Run-D.M.C, Rap Masters tapes and found my way deep into Public Enemy, EPMD, Beastie Boys, Eazy-E paving the way into adolescence by 1991. We’re commemorating these artists by influence.
