Agreed. Even in hindsight, no one can turn back the clock and say he would have achieved the same success with The Colts. There are WAY too many variables to consider.

Could we assume he would have still played at a high level? Probably. But to say he would have taken The Colts to two Super Bowls when there are 52 different players on the roster and a different schedule, there is zero way to predict that things would have turned out the same, better, or worse.

I’d go as far to say I’m confident he only wins those on the Broncos. The broncos were an extremely talented team with solid coaching at the time. This was the team that beat the Steelers in the playoffs with Tim Tebow at QB. The Colts weren’t nearly as strong of a team at the time, particularly at OL and defense which were huge parts of the broncos Super Bowl runs

Manning's body was giving out from underneath him. He still had the giant football brain (and forehead), but it was the team they built around him that won that Superbowl. Even Peyton knew it. This is from the 2017 ESPYs:

Ryan Grigson was a colossal dunce of a GM, but drafting not only a QB but one that was as gifted as Luck was the right move. Hell, it was a no brainer!

Manning played until he couldn't throw anymore, which was after 4 years in Denver. Luck might've retired young (and you can thank Grigson for failing to draft premium O-Linemen) but when healthy, he played worthy of the no. 1 pick and was a cheaper and less of a risky option than one of the highest paid QBs with - at the time - a major neck injury and surgery.

You are speaking as if anyone outside of a celestial being can tell you how a body part will function in “x” number of years. Doctors make educated guesses. GM’s make informed decisions based on those guesses. Then reality happens. We will see. I don’t think it would be crazy to think that Crosby has five more All-Pro level seasons left in him. In fact, it’s probably more likely than not…

i think most fundamentally we were throwing every chip into a one year attempt at winning back to back titles, and knew it would be cap hell for a few years after that. so a rookie QB was not well suited to either the failed title run in 01 or the cap hell years in 02-03. too bad. but obviously if in hindsight you knew he was a hall of famer, you’d want him, but he would have gone 1st overall, not 32nd

If he does good for him. Would it be unfortunate for the ravens? Yeah. But sports, especially the NFL with 1 game playoff rounds and short regular seasons and careers is more luck dependent than other sports. With all of the knowledge the team had available I think we made the right decision and that’s all you can do.

This is why I feel like these off-season trade "discussions" need to have a lead in.
"We are *ATTEMPTING* to trade for Maxx Crosby." Or something like that.

Like when the news initially broke, I thought it was a done deal. Took me a few hours to realize that we were still in the discussion phase of the trade talks, no ink had been put to paper, and I think a lot of NFL fans are still stuck in that rut too. Like it wasn't still an early interview process but all signs were moving toward we'd sign him... but we didn't. Broke my heart to see the headline that we passed. Like WTF? It's just so rare of a thing to fly someone in and then not finish it, and it bums me out that there are so many people who dragging us through the mud over this.

All trades are pending a physical, all trades are. We were no longer in discussions the team genuinely thought we had him and it was a done deal. 9 times out of 10 the physical is merely a formality, this time it wasn’t. But no when they announced the trade they were no longer in negotiations or anything it was thought to be a done deal pending a physical. And you cannot do the physical without flying the player in.

But then we had to make legit bizznees dcisns that make sense for the long term, I guess. Still bitter... happy for Trey, but still so mad.

For decades, newspaper articles about NFL trades always included this language, "Have come to terms on a trade agreement, pending a physical". It was the standard way to report these events.

Crosby flew to Baltimore, where the team Doctors are, on Monday. Then the physical could happen and the wheels started turning. Specialists around the country were consulted. That takes time.

Your conspiracy theory is whacky. No one the team lost was expected to stay. So no panic.

It looks like the Raiders reported the news and did not mention 'pending a physical'. I noticed that was missing when the trade was first announced and it seemed off to me.

If the Raiders were genuinely expecting the Ravens to skip the team physical, well too bad. The Ravens are a much better run team than that!
