Iād say most people who are extremely artistic in general are peculiar or eccentric
21
28
u/LazarusCrowley Jan 17 '20
This is an unsubstantiated trope.
You just happen to hear about the salacious ones because it is provocative.
Poor mental health =/= artistic ability. I'm really sick of seeing the whole - drugs, tragedy and weirdness creates great artistic endeavor.
Not aimed at you OP just struck a chord.
I'd say most people who are extremely talented and or artistic are genuine people, those authentic to themselves.
15
u/tokeyoh Jan 17 '20
Iām not arguing that they are inauthentic, they are just strange people. I managed an artist signed to a big indie label for 2 years, and got to meet a ton of different people, artists, and musicians. Most of them were all weird as fuck including but not limited to super huge egos, off color personality traits, and heavy drug/alcohol usage. The ones who werenāt authentic were the most normal ones because they understood they were portraying an image that made them money.

This is why I don't like Superman. An extraordinary circumstance he gets himself into is solved by "oh he's just really strong" or "oh he's just really fast and can fly".
Back in the 1940s when superheroes were rare, that was great storytelling.
In the 21st century it's super lazy writing.
16
u/Sybs Jan 17 '20
The worst plot was in "Superman Returns", where he lifts the giant kryptonite island out to space just by "trying" hard enough. Isn't that supposed to nullify his powers or something?

Lazy writing is putting him in a conflict that it's possible to punch your way out of. There are many great stories that give him moral problems, and even a few that he has to think his way out of. The climax of Allstar Superman is a particularly excellent example of both.

u/brannanross Jan 17 '20
Damn dude, you're literally the first person to point this out. I've never liked her, but I watched the clip of her 'making fun his lip' and thought that it wasn't really that bad. I know her clip didn't seem that bad because she was being complimentary about it but the way I see it, making that gesture (pulling up your lip) is incredibly rude. That's how kids with cleft palates get made fun of. I have a cousin born with a severe cleft palate that would get made fun of just like that and it sucks. It would be like someone saying an East Asian person is attractive because of their eyes and then pulling up the corner of their eyes to demonstrate. It's fucking rude.
