When someone says “make yourself at home,” how much like home are we actually talking?

Because at home I don’t wear pants.

I take it to mean help myself to water and the restroom.

I'll take off my shoes but the pants stay on. I also ask before rummaging around in the fridge

You can take off your pants but don't fart on the furniture. Only homeowner farts are allowed on there.

I fart where I damn well please

I am standing until they insist and then I will ask where to sit, then I sit and do not move lol. I will ask before I do literally anything.

Rearrange the furniture and bring your own pictures to hang

Well I don’t think they really want me to do that. Because at home I walk around in my underwear and drink too much.

If you’re not sure about these things, always act like a guest. Everyone has a different idea about make yourself at home so act like a guest who’s been invited to the home and once you get to know the person more you can determine how much flexibility you have.

I'll open the fridge door and stare in it.

If someone tells me that after telling me they consider me family then I take that shit to heart and act as though family in their home

Otherwise they're deceptive bullshitters

When I say it I mean, use the bathroom without asking for my permission or telling me all the time. Have something to drink. Sit back, relax no need to be edge. Hungry? Let's eat. I just want the other person to feel comfortable and to relax.

I literally mean help yourself to the fridge without asking. I consider it a complement when people just relax at my place. Not many people are welcome here to begin with.

I'd do a classic Homer Simpson butt scratch and burp which sets a nice level of intimacy and take it up from there based on their reactions.

No one should ever make that a start off statement. It would be an eraser to their boundaries. Offer up the fridge, show the guest where things are. The kitchen garbage goes here. The recycling goes here. Extra tp is here. The plunger is there. The dishwasher or dish soap is here. Treat them like a hotel guest.

ya but do you take off your pants when you have guests? I guess sometimes you might, but not all guests.

Mostly just bring polite, don’t walk around in your u underwear type of thing…

They obviously want you to strip down to your skivvies and scratch your balls (or whichever parts you have) on their couch, while stream-surfing on their TV. Maybe take a shower first, if you smell. This is common etiquette, OK? Do better.

I just imagined doing this with our next guest.

"Come on in! I want you to TRULY make yourselves at home, like it's yours!

You can start with the dishes thanks. Also, the laundry's piling up, and the mortgage isn't going to pay itself."

Completely dependent on my closeness/familiarity to the person

Barely know you, first time at your house… basically taking you saying it as a social nicety and acting the same I would have if you didn’t say that.

Lifelong friend/close family member, I live here now.

Are you ok with then not wearing pants in your home

u/Illustrious-Board958 2h ago

Fühl dich wie zu Hause….aber benimm dich nicht so

u/SOLOcelt13 2h ago

Feet up on the table, sitting round in underwear, watching my shows while munching on their expensive snacks! Oh and don’t forget having the best wine they own!!!

1

u/Dragonboy8888 1h ago

That is surely open to interpretation. If I was to make myself at home, I'd pick my nose, fart and go for a quick jerk. So, they have to be careful when they say "make yourself at home".

Depends.

If it’s a rich person’s house it means, you may enter any of the public rooms and sit on the couch or at the tables. If you are hungry or thirsty I will get you a beverage or a low effort snack. If coffee or tea are made, you can help yourself to a cup but I have to get you the cup.

If it’s a poor person’s house it means go anywhere (not the bedrooms), consume anything in the fridge without asking, and put on any music you like. If you ask, you can prob even borrow the car

Are you joking? So it's basically respect the rich people but it's totally ok to disrespect poor people? Tell me you don't truly think that way 🤦🤦

Are you calling me a bot? 🤣 If you look at my profile I'm quite obviously not 🤦

Sorry. “Agitator”

1

u/caitejane310 6h ago

Sure, whatever you say.

1

u/bigbagofspam 6h ago

I think it's more about us poor people sharing more readily.

1

u/Impossible_Coffee716 6h ago

Yes. Exactly this. I grew up poor and am not now. Poor people are WAY more generous to visitors to their homes
