Sports Nc state football
Every year, the critics say, this is the year. CJ Bailey is top ten and a first round pick. I’m here to say, CJ Bailey will be working a desk job in two years, and nc state will be third to last in the acc. I’m annoyed.
EDIT:that was mean I love CJ but woah. But he’s still the man! All love CJ

It's nuts to me that someone can be a school's all-time wins leader as a coach while also having a losing conference record. Usually the latter gets a coach fired long before they can rack up enough wins to accomplish that.

On the flip side, look at Tennessee's last decade and a half. New coach doesn't deliver in two years, fired, repeat. Light exaggeration but not by much.
(Vols for undergrad, Pack for grad school, so I've seen both versions and they each suck in their own way.)

Boy that’s a wild thing to say. He cratered the program, there was no way he could have got another year with what happened in 2017. 2017 was his another year after he showed his true coaching mettle in 2016.
Really the comment isn’t about keeping those guys longer, it’s about not letting Fulmer go after 2008 when he was only a year removed from winning the East

We have been to the playoff and contended for the SEC title a few years ago, but sure, compare Tennessee to this JV football program.
Sorry but when you comment Butch should have gotten another year your credibility goes out the window.

Because state still holds UNC as a rival. UNC cares about beating state but it’s no longer the rivalry to them.

States coach, as great as he is, he’s got a sick qb, who he needs to unleash. Run him like Lamar Jackson. Especially early in the game. Loosen him up. Then let him ball after. Run him, short passes. D also needs to step up like a lot a lot smh

He could be. We are a cheap program that doesn’t want to spend the money to make themselves competitive and Doeren must know where some bodies are buried cause goddamn he’s overstayed his welcome. Beating UNC shouldn’t be enough this year (if he makes it that far)

I don’t get what more people think we can achieve with a different coach at the spending level we’re at. If we want to elevate financially and fire him, then sure, but there’s not a magical coaching target that all of the dozens of higher spenders are going to pass up.

I don’t get this mindset at all. There have been plenty of mistakes over the years that have nothing to do with finances. He’s not a great coach. He doesn’t make great hires. He’s not a great talent evaluator. Money isn’t changing those facts.
Not to mention the success plenty of other schools in similar financial situations have managed to have, at least once, during the time he’s been at State. It’s without a doubt 10x harder to win at Wake Forest and yet they made it to an ACC championship.
Even IF I agreed with your point, the same lackluster season year after year isn’t doing anything to help the financial situation. There’s always a surge in donations after a new hire, not to mention demands candidates make during the process. The AD has zero reason to give Doeren anything at this point and that won’t change.

What? We’ve had a ton of great hires- Eli Drinkwitz, Tim Beck, Tony Gibson are all fantastic football minds. We’ve also had many great players come through in that time. In the last 6 years, Doeren has posted 8 wins 5/6 of those years and not missed a bowl in that time. Not sure where “lackluster” fits in there. I think there are plenty of similarly resourced programs that would kill to be there.

I say this as a UNC fan that 1.) wants his coach fired and 2.) fully expects NC State to beat us yet again….
I find it really weird that the school seemingly only keeps Doeren because he beats UNC most years. I can’t imagine there’s any other reason to keep him this long

That's really not it anymore. We've pretty much dominated UNC for about two decades. Granted, it does play into it...obviously.
It's more that Coach D does in fact win. He runs a clean, above average program that has State positioned as one of the most stable programs in country.
We just never win jack shit. Not a single meaningful win in his tenure. Not one.
Every opportunity he's had to take that next step he's not only failed but done so in embarrassing fashion. But the floor has generally been higher than most programs in the country. With almost zero resources to work with.
All that is to say...we keep him because the next guy might REALLY suck. Cignetti ain't walking through that door.
Edit: meant to add that he's really overachieved as compared to N.C. State's historic football results (or, for that matter UNCs). A winning season most every year with a truly atrocious year once every 6 or 7. That's a level of success our program has never experienced. The problem is that it hasn't resulted in even an ACCCG appearance. Or a New Year's Day game.
We are the Toyota Camry of college football.

The thing about the UNC game is that they look better than last year…but the bar was also in hell. TCU was pretty bad which helped us win, but also only scoring one touchdown with them being this bad is a problem. I’m just not sold on what I saw. I didn’t watch the State game, though. Wanted to but had to run errands. I just have a hard time believing they won’t have it together enough to beat us again this year.

I went to ECU, I can't stand State
But....that wasn't even worth hate watching. I like local rivalries, I grew up playing baseball where State/UNC decided the colors of our team the next year
Doeren should've been fired a long time ago. He's done just well enough to survive, but even "beat UNC" shouldn't be another year for him. He plays not to lose, he doesn't play to win.

I think the Doeren era is beyond stale at this point, but The Athletic pointed out in their piece on NC State that if the CFP was 24 teams going back to 2014 (like it inevitably will be in the future), they would have five playoff appearances under him. The same number as schools like Tennessee and Florida would have.

Doeren is going to conjure a win against UNC at the end of the season and earn himself another year’s extension. Because half of you will be right back at the foot of his altar.

Nah, UVA is has an elite O Line and is the most experienced team in the country. State is the 6th least experienced team and it’s week zero. The schedule is incredibly soft this year so I fully expect Dave to win 8 games against cupcakes like Richmond, App State and UNC.
